It was Hello Kitty Night at BMO Stadium, which feels about right, because for 45 minutes LAFC's finishing was adorable and completely harmless. Then Son Heung-Min and Denis Bouanga remembered who they were.

LAFC beat Austin FC 3-1 on Wednesday night in front of a capacity crowd, scoring all three goals after halftime. Bouanga scored twice, Son had a goal and two assists, and the Black & Gold snapped a four-match winless run in the league. It was also the first win for interim head coach Xavi Tamarit, according to the club.

Thirteen Shots, Zero Goals

LAFC dominated the first half without anything to show for it. Armindo Sieb forced Brad Stuver into a save in the sixth minute, and Leo Walta, making his first start for the club since arriving on loan from Swansea City on Aug. 31, was everywhere. Stuver saved his left-footed effort in the 15th minute, Walta smacked the crossbar from outside the box in the 21st, and Stuver had to save another long-range strike from him three minutes later.

Bouanga and Son both headed wide in the middle of the half, and Ryan Porteous nodded a corner just over in the 43rd. By the break, LAFC had 13 shots and a 0-0 scoreline. Austin's best moment came in the 25th minute, when Joseph Rosales got on the end of a Christian Ramírez headed pass and Hugo Lloris saved it in the bottom left corner.

The Second-Half Flood

The dam broke in the 52nd minute. Mark Delgado collected on the right and played Son in behind the Austin defense. Son wriggled between two defenders at the edge of the six-yard box and squared for Bouanga, who had nobody near him and finished from close range. Two minutes later, Bouanga nearly had another, but Stuver saved his shot from outside the box up near the top right corner.

Austin's response came from the bench. Myrto Uzuni replaced Oleksandr Svatok in the 63rd minute, and three minutes later he picked off a pass and fed Brandon Vázquez, who drilled a low shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner. Austin said it was the third straight match in which Vázquez has scored.

The equalizer lasted about a minute. In the 67th minute, per LAFC's account, Stuver's attempted clearance struck Son and bounced straight to Bouanga, who took one touch and beat the keeper at the near post. That is a brutal way to give a lead back.

Five minutes later, LAFC put it away with a goal that was all class. Bouanga out-jumped his man near the halfway line and nodded the ball on to substitute Jacob Shaffelburg down the left. Shaffelburg did not wait, bending in an early ball that threaded two defenders, and Son swept it home first time to make it 3-1.

Bouanga almost had the hat trick in the 80th minute, but his shot from the middle of the box came back off the crossbar. Lloris made two late saves on Vázquez and Ramírez headers to keep it at 3-1.

Son and Bouanga, Unplugged

Denis Bouanga finished with two goals, eight shots and four on target, plus the flick that started the third goal. LAFC said he now has a team-best 17 goals this season, seven in his last eight games, and 82 regular-season goals since his MLS debut in 2022, tying him for 25th in league history. The club also said this was his 17th regular-season multi-goal game for LAFC, the most in club history.

Son Heung-Min scored once and assisted twice. According to the club, his 15 assists lead MLS and tie Carlos Vela's club record for a single season, set in 2019.

Jacob Shaffelburg came off the bench and delivered the cross for the third goal. LAFC said it was his fifth assist of the season, a regular-season career high.

Brad Stuver made eight saves for Austin, which tells you how lopsided the shot count was.

Mark Delgado started the opening goal and, per the club, appeared in the 371st regular-season game of his career, moving into a tie for 20th in MLS history.

The Turning Point

Austin did the hard part. They held out until the 52nd minute, conceded, and then found an equalizer through Vázquez. One minute later, Stuver's clearance cannoned off Son and fell to Bouanga, and all of that work evaporated. Give Austin five minutes at 1-1 and maybe the match settles down. Instead, LAFC scored twice in the next six minutes and the contest was over. LAFC noted that 16 of the 20 goals it has scored in 13 regular-season meetings with Austin have come after halftime, so maybe this was always the script.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: LAFC 28, Austin 14, with LAFC putting 11 on target to Austin's four.
  • Possession: Austin had 60.4 percent of the ball and still got outshot two-to-one.
  • Saves: Stuver made eight, Lloris three.
  • Woodwork: LAFC hit the crossbar twice, through Walta and Bouanga.
  • Front-runners: LAFC said it is 12-0-3 in the league this season when scoring first.

What It Means

LAFC moved to 12-9-9 (wins, draws, losses) with 45 points. The club said it remains sixth in the Western Conference, one point behind Houston in fifth and two behind San Jose in fourth, with the top four in each conference earning home-field advantage in Round One. Next up is a trip to face New York City FC at Citi Field on Saturday.

Austin fell to 7-10-12 with 31 points after back-to-back losses, following a 4-1 home defeat to Nashville on Oct. 10. The win also ended a frustrating run for LAFC in this matchup: Austin had kept LAFC off the scoresheet in each of the previous three regular-season meetings, per LAFC, including a 0-0 draw in Austin on March 21. Austin host Vancouver on Saturday.

The Closing Take

LAFC said Son has assisted on nine of Bouanga's 17 goals this season. At this point, Son to Bouanga is the MLS version of Stockton to Malone: everybody in the building knows what is coming, and nobody can stop it.
