Real Salt Lake spent the first 10 minutes at BMO Stadium knocking on the door. Then Son Heung-Min kicked it in from the other side. In the 11th minute, the LAFC star ran at the RSL back line and slotted a left-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner, and the visitors spent the rest of Wednesday night chasing a game they statistically dominated.

LAFC beat Real Salt Lake 3-1 despite being outshot 28-12 and holding just 29.1 percent of the ball. Denis Bouanga added a second before halftime, DeAndre Yedlin turned the ball into his own net in the 68th minute, and Lukas Engel's late volley only trimmed the margin. LAFC called it the club's second consecutive win coming out of the World Cup break, in its first home match in nearly two months. For RSL, it was the club's return to MLS play after the tournament.

Possession for One Side, Goals for the Other

RSL came out flying. Sergi Solans headed wide in the second minute, Diego Luna missed from distance in the fifth, and Hugo Lloris had to save a Morgan Guilavogui strike in the sixth. LAFC's first attempt came from a corner in the 10th minute, when Ryan Porteous headed over. A minute later, Son struck. According to LAFC, Nkosi Tafari's long ball found Jacob Shaffelburg, who laid it into Son's path.

The visitors kept coming. Noel Caliskan had a shot blocked in the 21st minute and missed narrowly in the 25th, Stijn Spierings fired wide moments later, and Lloris saved another Caliskan attempt in the 36th. But LAFC were lethal on the break. In the 40th minute Mathieu Choinière slid a through ball behind the RSL defense, and Bouanga cut onto his right foot and rifled it into the top right corner for 2-0. LAFC said it was his team-best eighth league goal of the season.

The second half was more of the same, only louder. Rafael Cabral saved a Son effort from the centre of the box in the 49th minute, but RSL owned the ball and the territory. Zavier Gozo tried his luck again and again, Spierings headed a Luna corner wide, and Lloris made another save on Guilavogui in the 60th minute. Between the 63rd and 67th minutes, RSL had five attempts, including a close-range Victor Olatunji header that went just wide.

And then it got worse. In the 68th minute LAFC worked the ball down the left and crossed into the middle, and Yedlin, sliding in to defend it, deflected the ball past Cabral for 3-0.

RSL did get on the board. Lloris saved an Olatunji shot in the 86th minute, and on the ensuing corner substitute Saba Lobjanidze picked out Engel, who volleyed into the top left corner. LAFC said that goal ended a 297-minute stretch without conceding, dating back to May 17. Lloris stopped one more from Lobjanidze in stoppage time to close it out.

The Stars

Son finished with a goal, four shots and two on target. LAFC noted it was his second goal in as many games after he scored his first of the season against the LA Galaxy. Head coach Marc Dos Santos made clear he never wavered. "You guys know I always supported him, always believed in him," he said, per MLSsoccer.com.

Bouanga made it goals in back-to-back matches and seemed to enjoy the night as much as anyone. MLSsoccer.com noted it was Son's bobblehead giveaway night, and Bouanga had jokes: "For me, the bobblehead of Sonny is better than mine, because the celebration of Sonny is very iconic." ESPN's data credits Choinière with the assist on Bouanga's goal; the league's site credited Son.

Lloris finished with five saves in ESPN's data, while LAFC credited him with six. Either way, he was a big reason RSL's 28 shots produced one goal. LAFC also cleared the ball 55 times.

For RSL, Gozo led everyone with five shots and Caliskan added four. Engel scored his first goal for the club since arriving in January, according to RSL, and Lobjanidze made his RSL debut and picked up an assist within minutes of coming on. The club said he is the 237th player in its history.

The Moment It Slipped Away

The own goal was the dagger. RSL had just put together their most dangerous stretch of the night, with five attempts in roughly four minutes, and Olatunji's header from close range had flashed past the post. A goal there and the final 20 minutes become a genuine contest. Instead, about a minute later, RSL were down 3-0 off their own defender, and the comeback math went from difficult to impossible.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: 70.9 percent for RSL, with 705 passes to LAFC's 293.
  • Shots: 28 to 12 for RSL, but only six on target to LAFC's three.
  • Corners: 12 to 7 and 42 crosses for the visitors.
  • Clearances: 55 for LAFC, who defended deep and dared RSL to break through.
  • Saves: five for Lloris, one for Cabral.

Where It Leaves Them

LAFC moved to 9-3-5 with 30 points, and the club said it sits third in the Western Conference, two points behind both the Vancouver Whitecaps and San Jose Earthquakes. LAFC have now won three straight league matches and the last three meetings with RSL, by a combined 11-3, according to the club. Bouanga said it best: "It's good for confidence, for the team, for me, and for Sonny." They face Sporting Kansas City on Saturday chasing a fourth straight win.

RSL dropped to 8-2-5 with 26 points, listed fourth in the West by the club. It was also head coach Pablo Mastroeni's 200th match in charge, a count RSL's notes say spans all competitions and exhibitions. Next up is a Saturday trip to Portland, followed by a visit to St. Louis on Aug. 1.

Final Whistle

This one played out like a heist movie where the crew never touches the vault. RSL cased the place for 90 minutes, took 28 shots and won 12 corners. LAFC slipped in three times and left with the loot. Son even got to celebrate on his own bobblehead night, which is about as Hollywood as a Wednesday in July gets.
