Sporting Kansas City walked into BMO Stadium knowing exactly how LAFC wanted to play. Raphael Wicky said as much afterward. "That is how LAFC plays this year. This is their strength," the Sporting head coach said. Knowing it and stopping it turned out to be two very different things.

LAFC sat back, waited for mistakes and turned three of them into first-half goals on its way to a 4-0 win on Saturday night. Son Heung-Min scored in the fifth minute, Denis Bouanga added one in the 37th, and David Martínez made it 3-0 in first-half stoppage time before Bouanga finished off the rout in the 85th. It was LAFC's fourth straight win, and Hugo Lloris, who made one save, kept what the AP called his MLS-leading 10th clean sheet.

Three Counters, Three Goals

The opener came almost immediately. Manu García was booked in the second minute, and three minutes later LAFC broke at speed and Son finished from the right side of the box with a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. Five minutes in, and Sporting's game plan already had a dent in it.

Sporting actually had more of the ball, finishing with 53.7 percent of possession, but it rarely led anywhere dangerous. LAFC kept forcing corners and Son had two shots from distance blocked in the 23rd and 25th minutes. In the 37th, Mathieu Choinière slipped a through ball to Bouanga on another fast break, and Bouanga finished with his right foot from the middle of the box. LAFC said Aaron Long started that move by winning the ball at the edge of his own penalty area.

Sporting's best spell followed. Calvin Harris shot wide in the 40th, Lasse Berg Johnsen had an effort blocked, and Dejan Joveljic had a header blocked and then fired over off a corner in the 41st. None of it troubled Lloris. Then, deep in first-half stoppage time, LAFC did it again. Bouanga played the pass, Martínez ran onto it on the counter and slotted a left-footed finish from the middle of the box into the bottom left corner. Three fast breaks, three goals, 3-0 at the half.

A Quieter Second Half

LAFC brought on Eddie Segura for Timothy Tillman at halftime and spent most of the second half managing the game. Son forced Stefan Cleveland into a save in the 53rd, and both benches started rotating around the hour mark. Moisés Mosquera came on for Or Blorian in the 69th.

According to the AP, Sporting's first shot on target did not arrive until the 77th minute, when Zorhan Bassong tried his luck from outside the box and Lloris saved. Bassong had another effort blocked in the 82nd.

Son came off for Jeremy Ebobisse in the 85th, and in the same minute LAFC added a fourth. Tyler Boyd, on as a substitute, set up Bouanga, who drove a first-time, right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. ESPN credited Boyd with the assist, and LAFC also credited Ryan Porteous, saying it was the first goal involvement of his MLS career.

The Stars

Denis Bouanga took two shots, scored twice and added an assist. LAFC said the brace gave him 10 goals this season and 75 for his MLS career, making him the 39th player in MLS history to reach 75 regular-season goals.

Son Heung-Min took four shots, put two on target and scored for a third straight game since the World Cup break. mlssoccer.com noted that those are his first three regular-season goals of the year, to go with a league-best 10 assists.

David Martínez finished his chance cleanly. LAFC said it was his 10th goal in all competitions this year.

Mathieu Choinière picked up his second assist in as many games, according to the club.

Hugo Lloris made one save. He barely needed more, and the defense in front of him earned plenty of the credit. "I think we're defending as a whole unit," Porteous said.

The Turning Point

Martínez's goal in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time. A 2-0 deficit is a mountain. A 3-0 deficit at halftime is a different sport. Wicky put it plainly: "The first one is very early in the game and the third one is the total killer right before halftime."

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: 8 apiece.
  • Shots on target: LAFC 5, Sporting 1.
  • Possession: Sporting 53.7 percent, LAFC 46.3 percent.
  • Passes: Sporting 692, LAFC 600.
  • Saves: Lloris 1, Cleveland 1.

What It Means

LAFC moved to 10-3-5 with 33 points. The club said that left it tied on points with the Vancouver Whitecaps and San Jose Earthquakes for first place in the Western Conference, though the AP noted both of those teams have games in hand. LAFC has won four straight dating to a 1-0 win over Seattle on May 24 and, per the club, has scored 10 goals and conceded one in three games since the World Cup break. LAFC also said it is unbeaten in its last 10 meetings with Sporting, dating to 2021. Next up is a trip to Vancouver on Aug. 1 for what mlssoccer.com billed as a clash for first place in the West.

"Guys are understanding what we want, and they're applying it very well," head coach Marc Dos Santos said.

Sporting fell to 4-2-11 with 14 points, and the AP said the loss kept it at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Sporting hosts the Houston Dynamo on Saturday.

The Rope-a-Dope

LAFC is not interested in winning the possession battle. It wants you to have the ball, get comfortable and make one pass too many, then it punishes you before you can blink. Defender Jake Davis summed up the night from the losing side: "He's one of the best players in the league and he got us tonight." He meant Bouanga. He could have meant the whole system.
