Coronations are supposed to be grand. Nashville SC's was a scrappy rebound and a pounce on a stray pass on a sunny afternoon in Montréal, and nobody in gold cared one bit.

Sam Surridge and Hany Mukhtar scored second-half goals as Nashville beat CF Montréal 2-0 at Stade Saputo on Saturday afternoon, clinching the 2026 Supporters' Shield. It is the first Shield in club history, the second trophy the club has ever won, and it comes with home-field advantage throughout the MLS Cup Playoffs. Brian Schwake made six saves for the clean sheet in front of 13,016.

A Nervy First Half

The opening 45 minutes were more of a grind than a parade. Surridge forced 17-year-old goalkeeper Samsy Keita into a save in the second minute, but Keita was making his MLS debut and, per the AP, became the youngest player to start a game in Montréal's history. He settled quickly.

Montréal had the better of the half. Brayan Vera headed an Alexis Sánchez corner delivery over from close range in the 21st minute, and then Schwake went to work. He saved from Sánchez in the 31st, from Hennadii Synchuk a minute later and from Dante Sealy in the 39th. Nashville's star-studded attack managed a blocked Mukhtar shot in the 28th and not much else. There was no added time, and the teams went in level.

Surridge Breaks It, Mukhtar Seals It

It took six minutes of the second half for the champions-in-waiting to find their gear. Jeisson Palacios headed over from a set piece in the 50th, and a minute later Nashville scored. According to the club, Reed Baker-Whiting pounced on a botched clearance on the left and curled a cross onto Surridge's head. Keita parried the header, but Surridge was first to the rebound and finished left-footed from close range.

Montréal did not fold. Schwake saved from Dani Pereira in the 58th minute and pushed away a long-range Synchuk effort in the 65th. B.J. Callaghan made a double change in the 67th, sending on Edvard Tagseth and Warren Madrigal, and nine minutes later the captain finished the job. Mukhtar pounced on an errant Montréal pass just outside the box, per Nashville, and beat Keita from a tight angle on the right.

There was a symmetry to it. Nashville's first trophy, the 2025 U.S. Open Cup, also came with Mukhtar and Surridge leading the way, per MLSsoccer.com, and the club's own notes point out that the same two players scored in that final in Austin. Two trophies, one double act.

Keita denied Mukhtar again in the 80th minute, and Schwake got down to a Vera shot in stoppage time to protect the shutout. The final whistle brought the Shield, and the celebration.

Stars of the Afternoon

Sam Surridge took three shots and put all three on target, scoring his team-leading 18th regular-season goal and earning Man of the Match honors, per Nashville. The club says he now has six goals in six career matches against Montréal.

Hany Mukhtar extended a ridiculous run. According to Nashville, it was his 17th MLS goal of the season, his seventh in six matches and the first time in his career he has scored in six straight MLS games. MLSsoccer.com counted it as his 99th MLS regular-season goal. "It's our second trophy in two years, and I think we have done a really good job all together," he told Apple TV, per the league site.

Brian Schwake made six saves, the most important of them in a first half when Montréal created the better chances. The shutout was his 14th of the regular season, a club record per Nashville, and the AP noted that leads the league.

Reed Baker-Whiting supplied the moment of awareness that broke the game open, jumping on a loose clearance and delivering the cross for the opener.

Samsy Keita made three saves on his debut and did not deserve to lose this way.

The Turning Point

The 51st-minute goal. Nashville had looked flat for 50 minutes, and a goalless draw would still have clinched the Shield, according to the league's own scenarios. But Baker-Whiting's alertness on a loose clearance gave Surridge the chance, and once Nashville were ahead, the game changed shape. Callaghan put it simply: "You need timely goals from your attacking group."

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on target: Montréal 6, Nashville 5. The hosts tested Schwake more than the scoreline suggests.
  • Saves: Schwake six, Keita three.
  • Possession: Nashville held 55.9 percent.
  • Tackles: Montréal made 18 to Nashville's 11, a sign of how hard the hosts worked to make this ugly.

What It Means

Nashville move to 21-7-3 (wins, draws, losses) with 70 points. The club says they are the first team in MLS history to reach 70 points through 31 matches, and by winning the Shield with three games left they tied the league record for the fastest clinch. The AP put them four points shy of the league's points record of 74, set by Inter Miami. They are unbeaten in seven straight, and they completed a season sweep after a 1-0 home win over Montréal in July. Callaghan also set an MLS record with 40 wins through his first 74 matches as a head coach, per the club. Nashville will unveil the Shield at home on Nov. 1.

"It's a huge step forward for the club and for the city," Callaghan said, adding that the Shield is about consistency: "That's what that Supporters' Shield recognizes, the long-term season's body of work."

Montréal fall to 6-7-18 with 25 points, last in the East, and the loss eliminated them from playoff contention, according to MLSsoccer.com. They have not won in four.

The Closing Take

In Music City, a gold record is nice. Nashville just went platinum, and with three regular-season games still to play, they are already talking about the next release. Mukhtar said as much: "And yeah, we are ready for more."
