NYCFC Beat Chicago Fire 3-1 as Fernández, Ojeda and Jones Strike in First-Half Blitz at Yankee Stadium
Nicolás Fernández, Agustín Ojeda and Malachi Jones all scored before halftime and Matt Freese made four saves as New York City FC beat the Chicago Fire 3-1 at Yankee Stadium.

Nicolás Fernández did not bother with a settling touch. Ten minutes into Saturday night at Yankee Stadium, a Chicago clearance dropped in front of him outside the box, and the New York City FC midfielder smashed it first time with his left foot into the top left corner. The AP had it as a 25-yard hit off a Jack Elliott clearance. Chris Brady had no chance, and Chicago never really recovered from the tone it set.
New York City FC beat the Chicago Fire 3-1, with Agustín Ojeda and Malachi Jones adding goals before halftime. It was NYCFC's second win of the week after a 2-1 victory at Columbus on Wednesday, while Chicago, beaten 3-2 at Inter Miami that same night, left the Bronx with back-to-back losses.
Thirty-One Minutes, Four Goals
Chicago actually landed the first jab. In the sixth minute Anton Salétros tried his luck from outside the box and Matt Freese gathered it in the middle of the goal. Malachi Jones was flagged offside twice in the first eight minutes, which looked like the story of an anxious start until Fernández made all of that irrelevant.
The Fire answered in the 21st minute with a set piece that bounced their way. Salétros whipped a free kick in from the right, Ojeda's header at the near post sent it on toward the far side, and Joel Waterman, who had kept running, steered a left-footed finish in from the left side of the six-yard box. According to the Fire's recap, it was his first goal of the season and his second overall for the club.
Parity lasted eight minutes. NYCFC broke at speed, Andrés Perea slid a ball in behind for Ojeda, and the winger bent a right-footed shot from the right side of the area that clipped the back post and went in for 2-1, per the AP.
The 41st minute was basically a rerun with a twist. Perea again found Ojeda in behind, but this time Ojeda squared it across the box and Jones tapped in from point-blank range for 3-1. The AP noted it was Jones's first goal since 2024. Talles Magno nearly made it four deep into first-half stoppage time, but his shot from the centre of the box missed the top right corner by a whisker.
Freese Holds the Door Shut
Gregg Berhalter did not wait around. Chicago's head coach sent on Robert Lewandowski and Jonathan Dean at halftime for Maren Haile-Selassie and Leonardo Barroso, and the Fire looked more dangerous almost immediately. In the 48th minute Lewandowski met a Philip Zinckernagel cross from the right side of the six-yard box and pushed it just wide.
The second half also got a little spicy. Djé D'Avilla, Waterman and Puso Dithejane were all booked for Chicago, and Fernández picked up a yellow of his own in the 62nd minute. The Fire had 16 fouls to NYCFC's eight, which tells you how much of the night they spent chasing.
The late push was real, and Freese was the reason it went nowhere. He saved a Lewandowski header in the 82nd minute, held a Mauricio Pineda drive from distance a minute later, and smothered Dithejane's attempt in the 89th after Jonathan Bamba threaded him through. Sandwiched between the first two of those stops, Bénie Traoré had a chance to end it on a fast break set up by Fernández and fired high and wide.
Who Ran the Show
Fernández scored for a third consecutive game, according to the AP, and his one shot of the night was the one that mattered most. He also drew four fouls, a reminder that Chicago's midfield spent a lot of the evening simply trying to stop him from turning.
Ojeda might have been the most complete player on the field. ESPN's data credits him with a goal on his only shot plus the assist for Jones, and he was the target of both of NYCFC's devastating runs in behind.
Perea was the guy pulling the strings. ESPN credits him with one assist, on the Ojeda goal; NYCFC's own recap gave him two, counting the pass that sprang Ojeda before the Jones finish. Either way, his vision split Chicago's back line twice in 12 minutes.
Freese finished with four saves, three of them in the final 10 minutes of regulation. For Chicago, Salétros was the most persistent first-half threat, with two shots, one on target, and he delivered the free kick that produced Waterman's equalizer, while Lewandowski managed two shots, one on target, off the bench.
The Moment It Tilted
The 29th minute. Chicago had just clawed level and had the momentum that comes with a set-piece goal. Then one counterattack, one pass from Perea and one finish from Ojeda flipped the whole thing. Instead of a tense, even game, the Fire were chasing again, and when Jones made it 3-1 twelve minutes later, Chicago's evening had been reduced to damage control.
Stats That Matter
- Three for three: NYCFC put just three shots on target and all three went in. Brady was credited with zero saves.
- 53.6 percent possession for Chicago, with 493 passes to NYCFC's 431. The ball was theirs; the scoreboard was not.
- Five shots on target for Chicago to NYCFC's three, with Freese stopping four of them.
- 29 clearances to 11: NYCFC were comfortable defending deep and breaking.
- 18 crosses, four accurate: Chicago's main supply line rarely connected.
Where It Leaves Them
NYCFC moved to 7-4-6 with 25 points, while Chicago sits at 8-2-6 with 26. That is a one-point gap between two sides that looked worlds apart for half an hour. The Fire's recap noted Chicago remain in the top four of the Eastern Conference, but the AP pointed out the loss followed a three-game win streak, so the recent trend is heading the wrong way.
NYCFC host Toronto FC on Friday, July 31. Chicago go home to Soldier Field to face Charlotte FC on Saturday, Aug. 1, their first match there since May, according to the Fire.
Final Whistle
It was fitting that this happened in a baseball cathedral. NYCFC came up three times with runners in scoring position and cashed every one of them, while Chicago kept loading the bases with possession and crosses and stranded nearly everybody. Fernández, Ojeda and Jones went three-for-three. On a night when efficiency beat volume, that was the whole box score.
