Nicolás Fernández's Brace Powers NYCFC Past Colorado Rapids 3-1 for Third Straight Win
Nicolás Fernández scored twice, including a free kick right before halftime, and Talles Magno added a late goal as New York City FC beat the Colorado Rapids 3-1 at Yankee Stadium.

Nicolás Fernández stood over a free kick on the stroke of halftime, struck it with his left foot and watched it settle in the bottom right corner. Yankee Stadium had a new favorite set-piece taker.
That strike was his second of the night and, as it turned out, the winner. New York City FC beat the Colorado Rapids 3-1 on Saturday night in the Bronx, with Fernández scoring twice and Talles Magno adding a late third to send 18,079 fans home happy and keep the Cityzens unbeaten through four games.
The Press Breaks It Open
The Rapids said they held 56 percent of the ball through the first 15 minutes, and goalkeeper Nico Hansen had to rush off his line to clear a loose ball outside his box before the five-minute mark. Hamzat Ojediran was booked in the eighth minute, and Fernández tested Hansen from outside the box a minute later. Colorado's best early look came in the 19th, when Darren Yapi's header from very close range off a Paxten Aaronson cross was blocked.
Then NYCFC's press did what it is built to do. In the 21st minute, according to the club, Maxi Moralez hunted down Rob Holding as Colorado tried to play out, and Holding's clearance went straight to Kai Trewin. Trewin sent the ball forward, Hansen saved Fernández's first effort from a tight angle on the left, and Fernández buried the rebound with his right foot from the center of the box, into the bottom left corner. 1-0.
The game got scratchy after that. Fernández was booked in the 31st minute for a foul on Hansen, Aiden O'Neill followed in the 39th and Yapi in the 42nd. Rafael Navarro forced a save from Matt Freese in the 44th, a reminder that Colorado was still very much in it.
The Turning Point: A Free Kick Through the Keyhole
Right before the break, Jackson Travis fouled Moralez and Fernández stood over the ball. His left-footed free kick slipped into the bottom right corner for 2-0, and MLS's match story called it the game-winner. Thiago Martins nearly made it three in stoppage time, meeting a Tayvon Gray cross in the center of the box but missing to the left.
Colorado answered anyway. Four minutes into first-half stoppage time, Yapi took a pass from Navarro in the middle of the box and beat Freese with a right-footed shot straight through the center of the goal. 2-1 at the half, and suddenly it was a game again.
Colorado Keeps the Ball, NYCFC Keeps the Lead
Colorado had most of the ball on the night but rarely turned it into danger after the break. Aaronson pushed a shot wide from the center of the box in the 56th minute, Yapi blasted over from range in the 70th after a fast break, and Navarro headed a cross from Aaronson wide in the 75th. Colorado sent on Ted Ku-DiPietro and Dante Sealy in the 55th, and later Mamadou Billo Diop, who the Rapids said was making his MLS debut on the same day he was officially announced as a first-team player.
Hansen kept Colorado alive. He saved from Hannes Wolf in the 67th, from Fernández from distance in the 68th and from Wolf again in the 74th. Pascal Jansen had introduced Magno for Keaton Parks in the 63rd, and the Brazilian ended up deciding the night.
In the 83rd minute, NYCFC credited substitute Raul Gustavo with a key block on an Aaronson shot from the right side of the box. Two minutes later, NYCFC finished it off. The club said O'Neill won the ball back in midfield and found Trewin, who released Moralez. Moralez slid a through ball to Magno, and his left-footed finish went into the bottom right corner. 3-1. Per MLS, it was Magno's first goal for the club since he left in August 2024, and he had spent the past two years on loan at Corinthians.
"It was a great moment for Talles Magno," Jansen said. "For him to score this important goal in an important match like today is a huge thing for him and for the team."
Star Watch
Fernández was the whole show. He took five shots and put all five on target, scoring twice, and he now has four goals in four games, according to MLS. He was also caught offside three times, which is just what happens when you spend the entire night trying to get in behind.
"An intelligent player who brings a lot of energy to the team and plays with a lot of passion and heart. A very clever player," Jansen said of him.
Moralez had the assist on Magno's goal and started the press that created the opener. On the other side, Hansen made five saves and deserved better, while Yapi scored on one of his three shots. The Rapids said the goal was Yapi's third goal contribution across two matches, and Navarro's assist gave him three contributions in two games as well.

What It Means
NYCFC is 3-1-0 with 10 points after a draw at the LA Galaxy and wins at Philadelphia, at home over Orlando City and now over Colorado. The club called it a third straight win and said Jansen's side holds first place in the Eastern Conference on goal difference. MLS added that the Cityzens lead the league with 11 goals and that this is only the second time in club history, after 2018, that they have taken 10 points from the first four games of a season. Inter Miami visits Yankee Stadium on Sunday, March 22.
Colorado drops to 2-0-2 with 6 points. The Rapids had won back-to-back home games against Portland and the LA Galaxy, and the club noted this loss ended that two-game winning streak in their first Eastern Conference match of the season. They stay on the road at Sporting Kansas City next Saturday.
Closing Take
Colorado had the ball for nearly 60 percent of the night and still never looked like the team in control. That is what an elite finisher does to a game plan. Right now, Fernández is the main character of the Eastern Conference, and NYCFC is happy to let him keep the script.
