Brian Schwake's League-Leading 11th Shutout of 2026 Earns Nashville SC a 0-0 Draw at NYCFC

Hany Mukhtar had the whole net to himself. In the 43rd minute at Yankee Stadium, Matt Freese tried to play short out of the back, the ball caromed off Raul Gustavo, and a beat later Nashville SC's captain was staring at an unguarded goal from around 12 yards. He found the crossbar instead.

That clang was the loudest sound of a Friday night in the Bronx that finished 0-0. Nashville SC, the team at the top of MLS, had more of the ball and more than double the shots but could not solve New York City FC, while rookie goalkeeper Brian Schwake barely broke a sweat on the way to another clean sheet. Nobody won. Nashville banked a point on its record pace; NYCFC banked a third straight draw and stretched its winless run to six matches, according to the AP.

A First Half That Ended on Time, and on the Bar

The opening exchanges set the tone. Sam Surridge headed over from an Andy Nájar cross in the ninth minute, and a minute later NYCFC answered with back-to-back blocked efforts from Nicolás Fernández Mercau and Bénie Traoré. Nájar was booked in the 13th minute, the first of six yellow cards on the night.

The hosts had their moments. Agustín Ojeda found space on the right in the 15th minute and forced Schwake into a save up high, and in the 32nd minute Traoré teed up Luighi for a look from very close range that the Brazilian pulled wide. It was NYCFC's best chance of the half and arguably of the night. Luighi had another try blocked in the 41st minute after more combination play with Traoré.

Nashville's best work came through its attacking midfielders. Mukhtar sent a direct free kick just over in the 18th minute, Elias Saad drew a save from Freese in the 21st, and then came the 43rd-minute gift that Mukhtar could not unwrap. The fourth official announced zero minutes of added time, and the teams walked off level.

Nashville Pushes, NYCFC Holds the Line

The visitors came out of the break hunting. In the 48th minute, Cristian Espinoza crossed for Surridge, whose left-footed shot was pushed away low by Freese, and Surridge had another effort blocked a minute later. Patrick Yazbek and Mukhtar were booked in the 49th and 53rd minutes as the game got scrappier, and Surridge's 62nd-minute header from another Nájar cross drifted wide.

Both benches got involved, with Matthew Corcoran, Shak Mohammed and Ahmed Qasem coming on for Nashville and NYCFC head coach Pascal Jansen turning to Aiden O'Neill and Malachi Jones. Mukhtar's second direct free kick, in the 78th minute, again sailed just high, and in the 84th he wriggled free of two challenges only to have O'Neill block the shot, per NYCFC's account.

The home side nearly stole it at the death. NYCFC's recap described a low Ojeda cross that zipped across the face of goal with Jones unable to get a toe to it. Jones and Bryan Acosta were booked in the closing minutes, and after just two minutes of stoppage time, the stalemate was official.

Schwake Keeps Stacking Zeroes

Schwake made one save. One. And yet the numbers around him are borderline ridiculous. According to Nashville, this was his league-leading 11th MLS shutout of the season, tying him with LAFC's Hugo Lloris for the top spot, and his 16 clean sheets across all competitions are a single-season club record. The AP noted that the 25-year-old rookie has conceded only 17 goals this season, the fewest in the league. Nashville also named him Man of the Match, a fine tribute to the defense in front of him.

Freese did the heavier lifting at the other end, denying Saad in the first half and Surridge right after the restart. The AP had it as his fourth shutout in 23 starts.

Mukhtar was the busiest attacker on the field with five shots, per ESPN, and he arrived in the Bronx red hot, with four goals and two assists across his previous four matches, according to the AP. Friday simply was not his night. Surridge took four shots and put one on target. For NYCFC, Fernández Mercau was a constant nuisance, drawing seven fouls, the most of anyone on the field.

The Turning Point: 12 Yards and a Crossbar

Scoreless draws usually hinge on one moment, and this one is easy to find. The 43rd-minute giveaway was exactly the kind of mistake a team this good is built to punish. Had Mukhtar finished, NYCFC would have been chasing the game against the stingiest goalkeeper in the league. Instead, the hosts went into halftime with their nerve intact and held the visitors to one more shot on target the rest of the way.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Nashville 13, NYCFC 6. Only two of Nashville's attempts were on target, and NYCFC managed one.
  • Possession: Nashville held 56.5 percent of the ball and completed 382 of its 448 passes.
  • Crosses: Nashville tried 17 crosses and connected on nine. NYCFC attempted six.
  • Discipline: Nashville took four of the night's six yellow cards.
  • Offsides: Nashville was flagged four times to NYCFC's one.

What It Means

Nashville moved to 16-5-2 with 53 points. Per both the AP and the club, that leaves the Boys in Gold 11 points clear of second-place Inter Miami in the Eastern Conference and 10 points ahead of the Vancouver Whitecaps in the Supporters' Shield race, and Nashville says it is the best 23-match start in MLS history. The draw ended a four-match winning streak but stretched Nashville's unbeaten run to six, the AP noted, and the club counts the team unbeaten in 16 of its last 17 MLS matches. It came six days after a 4-0 demolition of FC Cincinnati at home. One quirk survives: Nashville beat NYCFC 2-1 at home in May, but it is still searching for its first road win in the series, per the AP.

NYCFC sits at 7-8-8 with 29 points, and six matches without a win is a worrying trend heading into the stretch run. Next up, NYCFC hosts the New England Revolution on Wednesday, Sept. 9, while Nashville visits Toronto FC the same night.

A Show About Nothing, Mostly

Call it the Seinfeld special: a match about nothing that still managed to mean something. Nashville did not get the win, but it left New York with its lead intact, its goalkeeper's résumé thicker and one more reminder that it can grind out a result on a night when the finishing goes missing. NYCFC, meanwhile, proved it can hang with the best team in the league for 90 minutes. Now it has to figure out how to beat somebody.
