Brendan McSorley's Stoppage-Time Header Earns St. Louis CITY SC a 1-1 Draw at NYCFC
Hannes Wolf scored early in the second half, but substitute Brendan McSorley headed in a stoppage-time equalizer as St. Louis CITY SC drew 1-1 with NYCFC at Citi Field.

New York City FC played its home game at Citi Field on Saturday night, so maybe the baseball metaphor was always coming. NYCFC carried a lead into the top of the ninth, and the bullpen could not close.
Brendan McSorley headed home in the fifth minute of stoppage time, and St. Louis CITY SC escaped Queens with a 1-1 draw against NYCFC. Hannes Wolf had given the hosts a 50th-minute lead, Roman Bürki kept St. Louis alive with six saves, and two late substitutes combined to steal a point that looked long gone. NYCFC moves to 3-2-1 with 11 points; St. Louis is 1-2-3 with 5.
A First Half That Belonged to the Goalkeepers
NYCFC came out in the same lineup that had lost to Inter Miami CF in its previous outing, per the club, and head coach Pascal Jansen's group looked sharp early. Keaton Parks blasted a volley over in the 3rd minute, Tayvon Gray forced Bürki into a save from a tight angle in the 6th, and Nicolás Fernández thought he had opened the scoring before the offside flag went up. NYCFC's recap said that one would have been his sixth goal of the season.
Bürki then kept out a long-range Fernández strike in the 21st minute, and St. Louis slowly started to find its feet. Marcel Hartel was its most dangerous outlet, testing Matt Freese from distance in the 26th and 39th minutes, and Daniel Edelman sent a shot just wide in the 32nd. Edelman's yellow card in the 43rd was the only real blemish of a tidy half for the visitors. It finished 0-0.
Wolf Breaks Through, Bürki Holds the Line
The breakthrough came five minutes after the restart. Maxi Morález, the conductor in NYCFC's midfield, slipped a through ball to Wolf, and the forward calmly finished right-footed into the bottom left corner. It was a classic Morález moment: patient, precise and just a little cheeky.
From there the match turned scrappy. St. Louis picked up yellow cards for Jaziel Orozco in the 56th minute and Dante Polvara in the 61st, Wolf was booked in between, and NYCFC kept probing for a second. Bürki stopped Morález from distance in the 55th minute and then denied Agustín Ojeda from a difficult angle in the 63rd. Hartel had St. Louis' best look of the period in the 68th, but his shot from the left side of the box flew high and wide.
St. Louis threw bodies forward late. Miguel Perez, Cedric Teuchert and Lukas MacNaughton all came on before the 72nd minute, and Brendan McSorley and Mykhi Joyner followed in the 80th. NYCFC answered with Jonathan Shore and Raul Gustavo in the 75th and Talles Magno and Nico Cavallo in the 88th. Magno nearly sealed it almost immediately, missing in the 89th and then forcing Bürki into a save in the top right corner in the 90th.
Stoppage Time Chaos
The final minutes were bananas. Polvara fired a volley just over the bar in the 93rd minute after MacNaughton nodded a set piece into his path. At the other end, Fernández broke through in the fifth minute of stoppage time, only for Bürki to save again. NYCFC's own recap called it a miss that proved costly.
It was. Moments later, MacNaughton swung in a cross, and McSorley rose in the middle of the box to head into the bottom left corner. According to St. Louis, it was McSorley's first goal of the season and the third of his MLS career, while MacNaughton's assist was his first of 2026 and the second of his MLS career.
Star Turns
Bürki was the best player on the field. Six saves, including two in the final minutes, and the final one on Fernández is the reason this article has a happy ending for St. Louis. NYCFC put 7 of its 15 shots on target and scored once. Credit the Swiss keeper.
On the NYCFC side, Morález ran the show, picking up the assist and adding two shots of his own, while Fernández was a constant threat with five attempts and two on target. Wolf scored with his only shot of the night. The issue was never creation; it was finishing the job.
McSorley's goal came from his only shot, and the substitute had been on the field for roughly 15 minutes. That is the dream impact sub stat line.
The Turning Point
Stoppage time, minute five. Within the same stoppage-time minute, NYCFC went from Fernández potentially making it 2-0 to McSorley making it 1-1. Bürki's save on Fernández did more than keep the deficit at one. It kept St. Louis breathing, and moments later the equalizer arrived. Matches swing on moments like that, and NYCFC will be watching that sequence on loop this week.
Stats That Matter
- Shots on target: NYCFC 7, St. Louis 3. Bürki saved 6.
- Possession: NYCFC had 57.6% of the ball and completed 553 passes to St. Louis' 384.
- Total shots: Nearly even, 15 for NYCFC and 14 for St. Louis.
- Discipline: St. Louis was booked three times, NYCFC once.
- Bench impact: Both St. Louis goal contributors, McSorley and MacNaughton, came off the bench.
What It Means
For St. Louis, this was its first road point of 2026, according to the club, after losses at San Diego FC and LAFC. Coming off a 3-1 win over the New England Revolution, the team has now taken four points from its last two matches. St. Louis also said it remains undefeated against NYCFC, now 1-0-1 all time. Next up is a trip to FC Dallas on Saturday, April 11.
NYCFC has to treat this as two points dropped. After back-to-back home wins over Orlando City SC and the Colorado Rapids earlier in March, Jansen's side has now gone two matches without a win, including the loss to Inter Miami. At 3-2-1, it is still in a decent spot, but its finishing has to sharpen before a meeting with the Vancouver Whitecaps on April 11.
Closing Take
Citi Field is a baseball park, and NYCFC just learned the oldest lesson in the bullpen: a one-run lead is never safe, especially against a goalkeeper who refuses to quit. Bürki kept the door open, McSorley walked through it, and NYCFC was left to argue with the scoreboard.
