The Rocky Mountain Cup came down to one corner kick. In the 58th minute, Youssef Maziz stood over the ball on the left side, swung a cross toward the back post and found Reggie Cannon arriving all alone. The Colorado Rapids right back rose and powered a header into the bottom right corner, and Dick's Sporting Goods Park finally exhaled.

That was the only goal of a 1-0 Colorado win over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night, and it was more than enough. The Rapids kept the Rocky Mountain Cup for a third straight year, something the club said it had never done before, and they did it without allowing RSL a single shot on target.

Cabral Keeps the Door Shut, for a While

Colorado came out flying. Maziz dragged a shot wide in the second minute, and RSL captain Rafael Cabral had to get down to stop a Hamzat Ojediran drive in the fifth. Rafael Navarro missed from distance in the 12th, and Ojediran picked up an early yellow card two minutes later.

The visitors' best look of the half came from a set piece in the 18th minute, when Samuel Junqua headed just wide from an Aiden Hezarkhani cross after a corner. After that, it was Cabral against Georgi Minoungou. In the 25th minute, Paxten Aaronson's cross picked out Minoungou, and Cabral dropped to keep out his header from the left side of the six-yard box. Three minutes later, Minoungou was through again from the right side of the box, and Cabral slid to deny him a second time. Navarro had a header blocked in that same minute, and another Navarro header, from a Maziz cross after a corner, drifted wide in the 36th.

RSL's only meaningful reply before the break was a Sergi Solans attempt from more than 35 yards that sailed high and wide. Per RSL, Colorado outshot the visitors 8-2 in the first half, and the teams went in level after the fourth official signaled zero minutes of added time.

One Corner, One Header, One Trophy

The second half followed the same script. Rob Holding was booked in the 49th minute, Pablo Ruiz had two shots from distance blocked, Hezarkhani went into the book in the 53rd, and Navarro had another effort blocked in the 55th. Then Kobi Henry conceded a corner in the 57th, and Maziz made it count.

Real Salt Lake head coach Pablo Mastroeni went to his bench quickly, sending on Juan Manuel Sanabria and Diego Luna in the 63rd minute, then Colin Guske in the 72nd for his RSL debut, eight days after the club acquired him on loan from Orlando City. None of it moved the needle. Morgan Guilavogui, Noel Caliskan, Guske and Juan Jose Arias all picked up yellow cards as the frustration built, and RSL managed only two shots in the entire second half.

Colorado nearly doubled the lead late. Loïc Williams had a close-range header blocked in the 85th minute, and in the 87th, Aaronson hit the left post from a tight angle and long range after a corner. Six minutes of stoppage time came and went without RSL troubling the Colorado goal.

Cannon Fires, Maziz Delivers

Cannon's header was his second goal of the season, a new single-season career high according to the Rapids, and both goals have come in his last four appearances. Not bad for a defender who spends most nights stopping wingers rather than scoring on them.

Maziz, whom the club called its most recent signing, recorded his second assist in just his fourth appearance for Colorado. His set-piece delivery was the difference on a night when the Rapids created plenty from open play but could not get anything past Cabral.

Speaking of Cabral, he deserved better. The RSL captain made three saves, two of them excellent, in his return to the lineup after sitting out the club's previous MLS match, which ended his 63-game starting streak, per RSL.

At the other end, Adam Beaudry made his first appearance of the season, according to Colorado, and ESPN's data shows he did not have to make a single save.

The Turning Point: Henry's Corner, Maziz's Ball

Colorado had spent 57 minutes knocking on the door, and Cabral kept answering. Breaking down RSL's back line in open play was not working, so the Rapids got their goal the old-fashioned way. Henry's concession in the 57th minute set it up, Maziz's delivery found the gap at the back post, and Cannon finished it. For a team that had been dominant but toothless, it was exactly the kind of goal that wins tight derbies.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on target: Colorado 4, Real Salt Lake 0.
  • Shots: Colorado 14, Real Salt Lake 4.
  • Possession: Colorado controlled 64.3 percent and completed 506 passes to RSL's 243.
  • Corners: Colorado earned seven to RSL's one, and the deciding goal came from one of them.
  • Discipline: RSL committed 21 fouls and collected five yellow cards.

What It Means

Colorado moved to 10-1-11 with 31 points, and both clubs listed the Rapids seventh in the Western Conference after the match. The clean sheet was their fifth straight at home, which the club said ties a club record set in 2004, and Colorado says it is now 11-2-0 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park across all competitions this season. The Rapids visit the Columbus Crew on Saturday, Sept. 5.

For RSL, it is getting dark. The club fell to 8-4-9 with 28 points, listed 10th in the West, and the losses keep coming. Per RSL, this was its fourth straight defeat across all competitions in a stretch of nine matches in 30 days, its MLS winless run now stands at eight games dating back to May 16, and it has not won on the road since March 7. The teams' first meeting this season, on May 16, ended in a 2-1 RSL win at home, and RSL's match notes say Colorado retained the Cup after drawn series in 2025 and 2026. RSL hosts LAFC on Saturday, Sept. 5, and Guilavogui will miss that match due to yellow card accumulation, according to the club.

No Montage for RSL

Every Rocky movie has the training montage before the comeback. Real Salt Lake is still waiting for the music to start. Colorado, meanwhile, keeps winning its own little title fight in the Rockies, and on Saturday it took just one well-placed corner to defend the belt.
