Sporting Kansas City spent 44 minutes chasing Colorado, finally caught them, and then handed the lead straight back before anyone at Sporting Park had finished celebrating. Everything after that felt like a slow-motion replay of the same lesson.

The Colorado Rapids won 4-1 on Saturday night in Kansas City, Kansas, with Paxten Aaronson scoring twice, Wayne Frederick poking in his first MLS goal in first-half stoppage time and Rafael Navarro adding a goal and an assist. The Rapids called it their first road win of 2026, and it moved them to 3-0-2 with nine points. Sporting KC fell to 1-1-3.

A Gut Punch Right Before the Break

Calvin Harris had Sporting's first look in the 3rd minute, but his shot from the right side of the box drifted wide. Colorado scored nine minutes later with a move worth rewinding. By the Rapids' account, Rafael Navarro started it with a pass flicked behind his own back with the outside of his boot. Darren Yapi ran at the left side of the defense and slipped the ball into the middle, where Aaronson finished with his left foot into the bottom right corner.

Zack Steffen kept it 1-0 in the 15th minute with a save on Dejan Joveljic from a tight angle, and John Pulskamp answered at the other end by stopping Yapi in the 19th. Jansen Miller, Lucas Herrington and Rob Holding were all booked between the 38th and 42nd minutes, three yellows in five minutes.

Sporting finally broke through in the 44th minute. Harris sprang a fast break with a through ball, and Shapi Suleymanov finished from a difficult angle on the left into the bottom left corner.

Then came the corner. Colorado won one in first-half stoppage time, the Rapids said the ball gave the Kansas City goalkeeper trouble, and Frederick was waiting at close range to knock it in. It was 2-1 at the half, and Sporting coach Raphael Wicky did not hide how much it stung. "That's obviously a big disappointment for everyone," he said.

Holding's Reprieve, Then the Floodgates

Steffen had to push away a long-range Suleymanov shot in the 59th minute, and both teams were losing bodies. Wyatt Meyer went off injured in the 52nd minute for Kwaku Agyabeng, and Yapi left with an injury in the 61st, replaced by Josh Atencio.

The pivotal moment came in the 68th minute. Holding, already on a yellow card, fouled Joveljic, and no second card came. Wicky thought one could have come. "I thought it was a foul where you can give a second yellow but, after losing 4-1, I don't think I want to start talking about the referee too much," he said. Referee Fotis Bazakos told a pool reporter, "The level of contact was determined to be a careless foul," adding that the ball ran to a Colorado player, so no promising attack was stopped.

Colorado pulled Holding for Noah Cobb two minutes later, and Sporting brought on Stephen Afrifa for Suleymanov at the same time. One minute after that, the game was effectively over. Miguel Navarro bombed down the left and drilled a low cross that Rafael Navarro tapped in from close range in the 71st minute. Four minutes later, Rafael Navarro turned provider, laying the ball off at the top of the box for Aaronson, who finished with his right foot into the bottom left corner. ESPN credits Rafael Navarro alone with that assist, while the Rapids also gave one to Dante Sealy for the long ball that started it.

Pulskamp kept it at 4-1 with saves on Sealy in the 82nd minute and again deep in the eight minutes of added time, plus one more on Rafael Navarro just before the final whistle.

The Rapids Who Ran the Show

Paxten Aaronson took two shots and scored with both, one with each foot. The Rapids said it was the first brace of his career.

Rafael Navarro had a goal, an assist and a match-high five shots. According to the club, the goal was his 31st for Colorado, tying Cole Bassett and Chris Henderson for the sixth most in club history. The Rapids added that he now has five goal contributions in his last three matches.

Wayne Frederick scored his first MLS goal, per the Rapids, and had three shots on the night.

Miguel Navarro picked up a yellow card and then delivered the cross that killed the game.

For Sporting, Suleymanov scored and put two of his three shots on target, and Harris set up the goal. Pulskamp made four saves and still conceded four, which is the goalkeeping equivalent of bailing water out of a canoe with a teaspoon.

Where It Slipped Away

Wicky named the moment himself. "I think then the killer moment is the 3-1, right?" he said, adding that Sporting had made a sub and felt they had momentum before Colorado played through them "too easy." Midfielder Jacob Bartlett called the late first-half equalizer "a huge momentum shift for us," which makes the Frederick goal three minutes later all the more painful.

Both moments mattered. Frederick's goal stole the halftime reset; the 71st minute goal stole the hope.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Colorado 17, Sporting KC 8.
  • On target: The Rapids put 9 on frame to Sporting's 3.
  • Possession: A dead heat at 50.1 percent for Sporting to 49.9 for Colorado.
  • Saves: Pulskamp made 4, Steffen 2.
  • Interceptions: Colorado had 11 to Sporting's 7.

What It Means

The Rapids bounced back from a 3-1 loss at New York City FC the previous weekend and now have three wins in five matches. Their recap listed them fifth in the Western Conference, and the club noted that Aaronson and Frederick became their sixth and seventh different scorers of the season, tied with NYCFC for the second most in MLS. After the international break, they visit Toronto FC on Saturday, April 4.

Sporting KC had beaten the LA Galaxy 2-1 a week earlier for their first win of the season, and this result knocked them right back down. The Rapids' recap had them 13th in the West. Wicky said "we will work on that," but he also put it bluntly: "We cannot concede four goals and think that we're going to go anywhere." Next up is a trip to Real Salt Lake on April 4.

The Last Word

Bartlett insisted, "I think we're trending in the right direction, the way we're playing and the process and ideas." Maybe so. But the scoreboard does not grade on process, and Colorado turned two short bursts into four goals. The Rapids head into the break with a road win banked and a front line that suddenly looks dangerous.
