The Rocky Mountain Cup is supposed to be a grudge match, and for seven minutes on Saturday night the Colorado Rapids made it feel like one. Then Real Salt Lake's kids took over.

Zavier Gozo, the 19-year-old homegrown, equalized in the 36th minute, rookie Sergi Solans headed in the winner in the 68th, and Real Salt Lake came from behind to beat Colorado 2-1 in front of a sold-out crowd of 21,424 at America First Field. Solans had a hand in both goals, and RSL opened the 2026 Rocky Mountain Cup with three points over the club that has won the last two.

Colorado Strikes First

The Rapids started fast. Paxten Aaronson forced a save from Rafael Cabral in the third minute, and by the seventh Colorado had the lead. Connor Ronan delivered a corner, Aaronson worked the ball toward the end line and found Wayne Frederick at the near post, and Frederick finished with his right foot into the top left corner. Colorado said it was Frederick's second goal of both the season and his MLS career, and Aaronson's fourth assist of the year.

RSL responded by throwing bodies forward. Nico Hansen saved a Justen Glad header in the 16th minute, then stopped Aiden Hezarkhani a minute later. Juan Manuel Sanabria and Gozo both tested him in the 20s, and Hezarkhani forced another save with a header in the 33rd. Colorado was holding, but barely.

The equalizer came from pressure. In the 36th minute, per RSL, Zach Booth's press forced a turnover, Solans stepped in front of a deflected pass and carried the ball into the box, and he slid it to Gozo, who finished first time with his right foot into the bottom left corner. The club said it was Gozo's sixth goal of the season and his fourth in his last four games. It stayed 1-1 at halftime.

Solans Wins It in the Air

Colorado came out of the break with intent. Hamzat Ojediran tested Cabral in the 50th minute, and Rafael Navarro forced a save from the RSL captain in the 52nd. Matt Wells' side made two changes at that point, sending on Josh Atencio and Rob Holding.

RSL answered with a triple substitution in the 64th minute, and four minutes later the decisive moment arrived. Sanabria swung in a cross from outside the box and Solans rose above his marker to power a header into the top right corner. RSL said it was his team-high sixth goal of the season and his fourth with his head.

Colorado pushed for an equalizer but created little that troubled Cabral. Navarro sent a header just wide in the 72nd minute, Frederick did the same in the 86th, and Alexis Manyoma's late effort went wide. The visitors also collected three yellow cards inside 40 minutes, from Ojediran, Atencio and Reggie Cannon.

The Young Guns

Sergi Solans scored one, set up the other and took five shots. RSL said the rookie striker now has six goals and three assists in his first MLS season.

Zavier Gozo was everywhere: six shots, three on target, a goal and a booking. MLSsoccer.com noted he leads RSL in goal contributions with 6g/4a and reported that he became the youngest player in club history to score a brace in a midweek win. Head coach Pablo Mastroeni praised the work behind the numbers. "It's because he doesn't want to let his teammates down," Mastroeni said of Gozo, per MLSsoccer.com. "In doing so, when you give to the team, it's amazing how the soccer gods will really celebrate you as an individual. He's had a fantastic week."

Juan Manuel Sanabria delivered the assist on the winner, and Rafael Cabral made three saves. The club said Cabral has played every minute for RSL across all competitions since joining in January 2025, and Saturday was his 53rd consecutive appearance.

For Colorado, Nico Hansen kept the Rapids in it with six saves, and Wayne Frederick scored and nearly added a second late.

Pressure, Turnover, Goal

The equalizer flipped the night. Colorado had a lead and a game plan, and it was surviving RSL's early pressure. Booth's press and Solans' quick thinking produced the goal that changed the mood, and from there RSL looked like the more likely winner. The header in the 68th only confirmed it.

Stats That Mattered

  • Shots: RSL 17, Colorado 8. On target: 8 to 4.
  • Saves: Hansen 6, Cabral 3.
  • Possession: Colorado 52.2 percent, RSL 47.8 percent.
  • Tackles: RSL 21 (18 effective), Colorado 9.
  • Fouls: RSL 18, Colorado 8.

Where It Leaves Them

RSL improves to 8-1-4 with 25 points and has won two straight after a 3-0 home win over Houston Dynamo FC on Wednesday. MLSsoccer.com said the result moved RSL into third in the Western Conference, four points behind Vancouver. According to the club, RSL has won seven of its eight home matches this season and has won just three times in the last two seasons after conceding first, all three at home.

Colorado falls to 5-1-8 with 16 points, its midweek 1-0 win at Minnesota United FC followed by another loss. The Rapids host the San Jose Earthquakes in a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal on May 20, while RSL plays its final league match before the World Cup break at Minnesota on May 23.

The setting matched the stakes. RSL said the crowd was the sixth-largest in the club's 18 years in Sandy and its 13th straight sellout, and Colorado noted this was the 62nd MLS meeting between the clubs in the rivalry's 22nd year.

Mastroeni, who captained Colorado to its 2010 MLS Cup title and later coached the Rapids according to RSL, has made America First Field a hard place for his old club to visit.

Coming of Age

This had the feel of a coming-of-age movie, the part where the young leads stop being promising and start being the reason. A 19-year-old and a rookie striker dragged RSL back from a goal down against a bitter rival. Colorado got the opening scene. RSL got the ending.
