Zavier Gozo's First MLS Brace Powers Real Salt Lake Past Houston Dynamo 3-0
Zavier Gozo scored twice in seven second-half minutes after a Duane Holmes own goal as Real Salt Lake beat Houston Dynamo FC 3-0 at America First Field.

For 45 minutes, Houston Dynamo FC looked like the better team. Then Zavier Gozo happened.
The 19-year-old homegrown attacker scored twice in a seven-minute burst after halftime, and Real Salt Lake turned a scoreless, nervy first half into a 3-0 rout of Houston on Wednesday night at America First Field. A Duane Holmes own goal opened the floodgates in the 49th minute, Gozo did the rest, and Rafael Cabral made sure the visitors never got back in it in front of 20,429 fans, the club's 12th straight sellout.
Houston Had the Better Half
If you only watched the first half, you would have bet on the orange shirts. Ibrahim Aliyu and Héctor Herrera both fired over inside the first six minutes, and Ondrej Lingr forced Cabral into a save from outside the box in the 14th minute.
Three minutes later, Houston nearly broke through. Franco Negri slipped a through ball to Nick Markanich, making his first 2026 MLS regular-season start according to Houston, and Markanich's left-footed shot from the center of the box clanged off the right post. Cabral then stopped Agustín Bouzat from distance in the 31st minute before producing the sequence of the half in the 39th, saving Lingr's shot toward the bottom left corner and then Jack McGlynn's effort toward the top left.
McGlynn dragged one more shot just wide before the break, and Agustin Resch headed over off a corner. The match was stopped three times for injuries, to Cabral, Bouzat, and both Gozo and Negri, and every player continued. By halftime Houston had the momentum and RSL had a clean sheet and very little else.
The Turning Point
The game flipped on a throw-in. Four minutes into the second half, DeAndre Yedlin launched a long throw into the box, Negri got his head to it, and the ball went in off Holmes for an own goal. Nobody on Houston's side could have scripted a crueler way to concede after a half of near-misses.
Houston had just changed things at the break, sending on Antônio Carlos for Resch and Mateusz Bogusz for McGlynn, while RSL brought on Diego Luna for Morgan Guilavogui. Whatever Houston's halftime plan was, it went out the window on a restart that began in a player's hands.
Seven Minutes of Gozo
Yedlin was not done. In the 57th minute he collected a goal kick from Cabral and, per the club, dribbled 70 yards upfield before sliding the ball to Gozo, who finished with his right foot from the center of the box into the bottom left corner. ESPN credits Yedlin with the assist, while RSL's box score also lists Cabral, calling it the first MLS assist of his career. The club says Gozo celebrated with a backflip, mirroring the one Jason Kreis made famous as an RSL player.
Seven minutes later, Stijn Spierings split the Houston defense with a through ball and Gozo hit a right-footed shot from the left side of the box into the bottom right corner. Two shots on target, two goals, game over. RSL's recap traces the move back to Sam Junqua, who also gets a club assist.
The goal made Gozo the youngest player in RSL history to score multiple goals in a regular-season game, at 19 years and 52 days old, according to the club. RSL's player spotlight adds that he broke Diego Luna's mark of 19 years, 311 days. It was also his first MLS brace, per MLSsoccer.com. Somewhere, a group chat in Utah is still sending fire emojis.
Star Turns
Zavier Gozo. Three shots, two on target, two goals and two offside flags before he made way for Aiden Hezarkhani in the 81st minute. MLSsoccer.com notes he now has five goals and four assists in 12 matches and leads RSL in goal contributions, and the club says he is tied with Sergi Solans for the team lead in goals.
Rafael Cabral. Four saves, all in the first half, and the reason RSL were still level when the second-half storm arrived. Per the club, he has now played every minute of 52 straight matches since he signed.
DeAndre Yedlin. The throw that produced the opener and the run that produced the second. Not bad for a night's work.
Houston still had chances to make it respectable. Guilherme, on for Markanich in the 55th minute, fired one just wide of the right post on the break in the 71st, Zach Booth smacked the crossbar for RSL from outside the box in the 85th, and Aliyu pulled one just wide in the 88th.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Houston outshot RSL 15-9 and put four on target to RSL's two.
- Saves: Cabral made four. Jonathan Bond made none, because RSL's only two shots on target both went in.
- Possession: RSL held 53 percent of the ball and completed 471 passes to Houston's 416.
- Clearances: Houston made 25 clearances to RSL's three.
- Discipline: Referee Jair Marrufo showed one yellow card all night, to Bouzat in first-half stoppage time.
What It Means
RSL improved to 7-1-4 with 22 points and bounced back from Saturday's 3-1 loss at FC Dallas, a result that had come during a stretch of three defeats in four league matches. RSL's recap lists the team fourth in the Western Conference, with Houston eighth. It was also RSL's second clean sheet of 2026, and the club has now won six of its seven home matches this season.
Houston fell to 6-0-6 with 18 points. The Dynamo had won four of their previous five league matches, including a 4-1 win at LAFC on Sunday, so this one stings. RSL's notes point out that Houston have just one win in their last 14 visits to Utah, which suggests this venue has been a problem for a while.
Both teams turn around quickly. RSL host Rocky Mountain Cup rival Colorado Rapids on Saturday, while Houston host Vancouver Whitecaps FC the same night in their final home match before the FIFA World Cup break, according to the Dynamo.
Closing Take
Houston played the first half like the protagonist and the second half like the extra who wanders into frame. RSL needed one lucky bounce to get going, and Gozo turned it into a coming-out party. If this is what the kid looks like at 19 years and 52 days, the rest of the West should start studying the tape now.
