Son Heung-Min had already done the hard part. In the 87th minute he was clear on the break, he had rounded Rafael Cabral, and the net at America First Field was wide open. Then DeAndre Yedlin came sliding in from nowhere and kicked the ball away at the last possible moment, and LAFC's winner turned into a highlight for the other team.

That stop preserved a 2-2 draw between Real Salt Lake and LAFC on Saturday night, a match in which the visitors led twice and the hosts answered twice. Denis Bouanga and Son each scored and assisted for LAFC, while Saba Lobjanidze and Noel Caliskan provided the equalizers for an RSL side that badly needed something to feel good about.

Bouanga Strikes, Lobjanidze Answers

Pablo Mastroeni made six changes to the RSL lineup from last weekend's 1-0 loss at Colorado, per the club, and Real Salt Lake started on the front foot, with Luca Moisa and Diego Luna both forcing Hugo Lloris into saves from distance inside the first six minutes. LAFC, lining up with a three-man back line in a change from their recent setup according to the club, answered in the eighth minute when Nkosi Tafari headed a Bouanga cross at Cabral.

Then the Bouanga and Son show started. In the 14th minute Son sprang Bouanga on a break, and Bouanga cut inside past Philip Quinton, per LAFC, and curled a right-footed shot into the top right corner. 1-0.

The lead lasted four minutes. In the 18th, Lobjanidze found the ball in the center of the box and finished into the bottom left corner. ESPN lists no assist, while RSL credited Caliskan with the pass. According to the club, it was Lobjanidze's first goal for RSL since joining on July 1, in just his third start.

RSL kept the pressure on. Sergi Solans fired wide, Juan Manuel Sanabria headed just over, and Lobjanidze sent another effort high in the space of four minutes. Juan Jose Arias was booked in the 30th minute.

The Duo Does It Again

LAFC restored the lead in the 38th minute with almost the same play in reverse. This time Bouanga broke down the left and cut it back for Son, who hammered a first-time left-footed finish high into the net. 2-1.

Three minutes later, Lloris kept it that way, saving a point-blank attempt from Lukas Engel on the right side of the six-yard box. That save looked enormous at the time. By the end of the night, it looked even bigger.

The Turning Point: Lloris Saves, Caliskan Pounces

The second half was a slugfest of chances. LAFC nearly put it away early, with Aaron Long heading just wide off a corner in the 48th minute, Cabral saving a Tafari header moments later and Tyler Boyd denied twice from close range in the 50th and 51st. RSL kept testing Lloris, who saved from Lobjanidze in the 54th and Caliskan in the 58th. Luna fired just wide in the 63rd and over in the 66th.

Mastroeni went to his bench in the 67th minute, sending on Yedlin and Aiden Hezarkhani, and Colin Guske replaced the injured Moisa three minutes later. The changes paid off. In the 75th minute, Caliskan had a shot blocked, Hezarkhani then forced Lloris into a diving save, and the ball fell to Caliskan, who poked it in from close range with his left foot. 2-2. It was Caliskan's first goal of 2026, according to the club.

That set up the frantic finish. Marc Dos Santos sent on Armindo Sieb, making his LAFC and MLS debut, and Ryan Raposo in the 82nd minute. Son and Mathieu Choinière both had shots blocked in the 85th, and then came Son's breakaway and Yedlin's clearance in the 87th. Tafari headed wide off the ensuing corner, and Lloris had to make one final save on Luna in stoppage time. Jason Shokalook made his RSL debut as an 88th-minute substitute.

The Standouts

Denis Bouanga scored one and set up another. LAFC say he now has 20 goal contributions in MLS play this season (12 goals, 8 assists), one of seven players to reach that mark.

Son Heung-Min matched him with a goal and an assist, and the club says the assist was his 11th in MLS play, tying him for second in the league. He also came within a slide tackle of a winner.

Nkosi Tafari took five shots from center back, two of them on target, a measure of how often LAFC got bodies forward on their eight corners.

Hugo Lloris made seven saves. Without him, RSL win this comfortably.

Noel Caliskan led RSL's charge with four shots, two on target, and a game-tying finish.

DeAndre Yedlin played about 25 minutes and produced the defensive moment of the match. Sometimes that is all it takes.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: RSL 22, LAFC 18.
  • Shots on target: RSL 9, LAFC 6.
  • Saves: Lloris 7, Cabral 3.
  • Possession: RSL held 57.7 percent and completed 554 passes to LAFC's 390.
  • Interceptions: LAFC made 21 to RSL's 7.

What It Means

Real Salt Lake move to 8-5-9 with 29 points. According to the club, the point extended a nine-match winless run in MLS but snapped a four-game losing streak across all competitions, and RSL sit 10th in the Western Conference. A crowd of 21,078 watched it, per the club. RSL visit the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday, then host New York City FC next Saturday.

LAFC sit at 10-7-7 with 37 points and, per the club, remain within the top four of the West with 10 matches left. Still, this was their third straight draw and sixth straight league match without a win. They host the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday.

Closing Take

This one played like a game of Whac-A-Mole. LAFC kept popping up with goals, and RSL kept hammering them back down. On most nights, Son rounding the keeper with an empty net in front of him ends the game. On Saturday it only set up Yedlin's goal-line rescue, and a point that felt like a win for the home side.
