Joaquín Pereyra Answers Sergi Solans Late as Real Salt Lake and Minnesota United Draw 1-1
Sergi Solans scored in the 82nd minute and Joaquín Pereyra equalized in the 89th as Real Salt Lake and Minnesota United drew 1-1 at America First Field.

Seven minutes. That is how long Sergi Solans got to enjoy being the hero of Saturday night in Sandy.
The Real Salt Lake rookie finally broke open a stubborn, scoreless match in the 82nd minute, and Joaquín Pereyra answered in the 89th as Minnesota United FC left America First Field with a 1-1 draw. It was the second 1-1 between these clubs this season, after the May 23 meeting in Minnesota ended the same way, and per RSL, eight of the last 10 meetings between them have now finished level. The club called that the most draws in any fixture involving two MLS teams since the start of the 2023 season. At this point the matchup should come with a laugh track.
Corners, Nerves and One Big Goal-Line Clearance
Both teams were playing their first MLS match since Aug. 1, and RSL came out like the side with something to prove. Drake Callender had to deny a Juan Manuel Sanabria shot in the 11th minute and a Dominik Marczuk effort in the 17th, and Diego Luna sent another one over the bar two minutes later.
Zach Booth was booked in the 12th minute and then went down, and Marczuk replaced him in the 15th. RSL said Booth had a right hamstring injury.
Minnesota slowly took the air out of the place. Kyle Duncan headed over in the 30th minute, Anthony Markanich headed wide two minutes later, and the Loons strung together five first-half corners. The scariest moment came in the 34th. RSL said a misplaced back pass from Philip Quinton let Markanich get to the ball ahead of Rafael Cabral, and Lukas Engel had to clear the attempt off the line. Minnesota's own recap said the visitors were comfortable without the ball, holding just over 36 percent possession at the break, and it was 0-0 at halftime.
Callender Builds a Wall, Solans Finds a Window
Minnesota brought on Bongokuhle Hlongwane for Duncan at halftime and spent the first part of the second half winning set pieces. Tomás Chancalay fired just wide on a break in the 53rd minute. Then RSL flipped the script.
Callender saved from Lineker Rodrigues in the 57th minute and from Stijn Spierings in the 59th, both from central spots, and RSL won three corners in that spell alone. In the 66th, Sanabria burst down the left and squared for Solans, who missed to the left with the goal gaping. Minnesota's best response came in a wild 69th minute, when Chancalay had a shot blocked and another go wide before Cabral got down to stop Mamadou Dieng. Owen Gene then missed narrowly off the ensuing corner.
Minnesota changed three players at once in the 71st minute, sending on Mauricio González, Kelvin Yeboah and Carlos Harvey, and Callender kept out another Marczuk drive in the 73rd. Then, in the 82nd minute, Luna nodded the ball on to Solans on the right side of the box, and the Spaniard took a touch and drilled a right-footed shot from a difficult angle past Callender and into the roof of the net.
Four minutes later, Solans nearly ended it, hitting the right post from the middle of the box. He was subbed off for Victor Olatunji a minute after that, and Minnesota made its final move at the same time, swapping Wil Trapp for Marcus Caldeira. Caldeira headed wide from a Yeboah cross almost immediately. In the 89th minute, he won a header and flicked it into Pereyra's path, and Pereyra lifted a calm left-footed finish over the onrushing Cabral. Callender still had to make one last stop on Sanabria in stoppage time, but the points were split.
Who Showed Up
Drake Callender was the reason Minnesota had anything to celebrate. He made seven saves, and RSL put seven of its 13 shots on target. Two of the biggest came in the 57th and 59th minutes, on what RSL described as a one-on-one with Rodrigues and a Spierings shot inside the six-yard box, exactly when the hosts were building real pressure.
Sergi Solans keeps doing rookie things that do not look like rookie things. His goal, per RSL, was his eighth in MLS this season, kept him atop the club's Golden Boot race and made it three straight games with a goal. RSL also counted it as his 12th across all competitions. Add the post and the 66th-minute miss, and it was a night of promise and frustration.
Joaquín Pereyra had two shots and made one of them count, and the partnership with Caldeira looks like a real weapon. Minnesota's recap compared the goal to a similar combination between the two in the club's Leagues Cup match against Atlante. Caldeira's assist came within two minutes of his arrival.
Lukas Engel gets a defensive shout for the goal-line clearance, while Diego Luna created the opener and was RSL's main connector in the middle.
The Post That Changed Everything
The turning point came in the 86th minute. Solans' shot off the right post would have made it 2-0 with time nearly gone, and a two-goal cushion against a team with three shots on target all night is about as safe as MLS gets. Instead, Minnesota's substitutes changed the final minutes, and three minutes after the woodwork rang, Pereyra had the equalizer.
By the Numbers
- Possession: RSL 57.1 percent, Minnesota 42.9 percent.
- Shots: Minnesota 15, RSL 13. On target: RSL 7, Minnesota 3.
- Saves: Callender 7, Cabral 1.
- Corners: Minnesota 10, RSL 7.
- Interceptions: RSL 21, Minnesota 12.
What It Means
Real Salt Lake moved to 8-4-6 with 28 points, which RSL's recap said left it sixth in the Western Conference. The club also noted that the draw stretched its MLS winless run to five matches, dating to May 16, and ended a 353-minute shutout streak. Home form is still the safety net: per RSL, the team is 10-1-2 (W-L-T) at America First Field this year. RSL hosts FC Dallas on Wednesday, Aug. 19, the last of five home games in a 15-day stretch.
Minnesota moved to 6-7-6 with 25 points, ninth in the West per RSL's recap. The point extended the Loons' regular-season winless run to eight matches, since May 2, and it was their third draw in a row after a 0-0 with Vancouver and a 1-1 with San Diego. They host Atlanta United at Allianz Field on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
Groundhog Day in Sandy
Bill Murray at least learned piano and ice sculpting while reliving the same day over and over. These two clubs just keep producing the same scoreline. RSL, 7-3 up on shots on target and denied by the post at 1-0, will feel the sting. Minnesota, with a late-game duo that already looks telepathic, will feel the momentum.
