Yadaly Diaby Shines as Whitecaps Blank Real Salt Lake 3-0, Push RSL's Winless Run to 12
Yadaly Diaby scored and assisted for the first time as a Whitecap, and Vancouver beat Real Salt Lake 3-0 in Sandy to extend RSL's MLS winless run to 12 matches.

Yadaly Diaby had already done the hard part. He had set up one goal and spent most of the night tormenting Real Salt Lake's back line. In the 63rd minute he finally got one for himself, ripping a left-footed shot from outside the box into the top right corner at America First Field.
That strike sealed a 3-0 win for the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night, and it came with a stat line to match: a goal and an assist, both his first for the club, per the Whitecaps, in what MLS noted was his first MLS start. Brian White and Thomas Müller scored in the first half, Yohei Takaoka kept a clean sheet, and Real Salt Lake slid to a 12th straight MLS match without a win, a run the club says dates back to May 16.
White Strikes Early, Müller Makes It Two
RSL actually landed the first punch. Sergi Solans, whom the club calls its leading scorer this season, forced Takaoka into a save at the bottom left corner in the eighth minute. It was the hosts' best moment of the half.
Vancouver went straight down the other end. Emmanuel Sabbi dragged one wide and Oliver Larraz had a shot blocked, but the Whitecaps kept the ball alive in the box. Larraz eventually dropped the ball to White, who tucked it in from very close range for 1-0. Per Vancouver, it was White's 16th MLS goal of the season, tying his career high from 2025, and his third straight MLS match on the scoresheet.
The Whitecaps then camped in RSL's half. Sabbi tested Rafael Cabral from distance in the 26th minute, and three minutes later Diaby drifted along the top of the box, with White pulling defenders toward him, and slid the ball to Müller. The German hit it first time from the centre of the box and into the top left corner. 2-0.
RSL had a flicker. Morgan Guilavogui ripped a shot from outside the box in the 32nd minute that Takaoka had to punch clear from the top right corner, and Juan Manuel Sanabria headed the ensuing corner wide. Cabral kept the deficit at two by stopping Diaby from range in the 34th, and the hosts went into the break needing a miracle.
The Spell That Never Paid Off
Vancouver switched centre backs at halftime, with Mathías Laborda replacing Ralph Priso-Mbongue, and RSL came out swinging. Solans missed in the 46th minute. DeAndre Yedlin and Solans both had shots blocked in the 54th. Philip Quinton then headed over from point-blank range in the 56th after a set piece. For about 10 minutes, the home side looked like the more dangerous team.
Pablo Mastroeni went to the bench, sending on Samuel Junqua and Dominik Marczuk. Vancouver answered with Ryan Gauld for Sabbi in the 62nd. Within a minute, Gauld's corner found Tristan Blackmon, whose header sailed over. Then the Whitecaps' press went to work: per the club, White hounded Junqua into a giveaway, Diaby collected it, and the ball was in the top corner before RSL could reset. 3-0, game over.
The only real feel-good moment for the home crowd came two minutes later. Emeka Eneli replaced Colin Guske for his first appearance since the Wild Card match at Portland on Oct. 22, 2025, per RSL, having sat out all of this MLS season with a knee injury.
The rest was mop-up duty. Takaoka saved from Marczuk in the 74th minute, Gauld clipped the bar in the 85th, and Cabral denied Müller in the 88th.
Diaby Steals the Show
Diaby was the best player on the field, and the Whitecaps agreed, naming him their Man of the Match. He led everyone with five shots, put two on target, scored once, and set up Müller. When he cut in from the left, RSL never figured out who was supposed to pick him up.
Müller was ruthlessly efficient: two shots, two on target, one goal. Per the club, that was his ninth goal across all competitions this season and his 16th goal contribution.
White did striker things. One shot, one goal, and the Whitecaps note he now sits three goals behind Lionel Messi's 19 in the Golden Boot race.
At the other end, Takaoka made three saves for his 11th MLS clean sheet of the season, one off the league lead per Vancouver, which also counts five shutouts in the team's past eight MLS matches.
The Goal That Killed It
Müller's strike made it 2-0, but the real dagger was the third. RSL had just put together its best spell of the night, with shots from Solans, Yedlin and Quinton all coming in a 10-minute window. Mastroeni had just made changes to push for a goal. And then Vancouver needed one turnover to end the conversation. That is what separates the top of the West from the bottom half: one team turns its good spells into goals, the other turns its good spells into blocked shots.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Vancouver 21, RSL 12. On target, it was 6 to 3.
- Possession: Vancouver had 52.8 percent, so this was not a smash-and-grab.
- Defending under siege: RSL made 19 interceptions and 24 clearances, and still conceded three.
- Discipline: Five Vancouver yellow cards to RSL's two.
What It Means
Vancouver improved to 15-4-6 with 49 points and, per the Whitecaps, stayed top of the Western Conference with a five-point cushion over Houston, St. Louis and Dallas and a game in hand. The win also wiped away the sting of a 2-1 home loss to Austin FC the previous weekend. The club says the 'Caps remain unbeaten in MLS play under Jesper Sørensen when leading at halftime, now 26 wins and three draws. They also beat RSL 1-0 at BC Place on Feb. 21, so that is two wins over Salt Lake this season without conceding a goal.
For RSL, the numbers are getting ugly. At 8-5-12 with 29 points, the club sits 12th in the West by its own count. RSL says the home winless streak is now five games, its longest since the combined 2016 and 2017 seasons, and after back-to-back shutout losses the club puts its scoreless run at 194 minutes. Next up is a Wednesday trip to Seattle.
Closing Take
Real Salt Lake are living in Groundhog Day right now: wake up, create a few chances, concede at the worst possible moment, repeat. Vancouver, meanwhile, look like a team that has already read the script. When a side can win 3-0 on the road while its newest attacker is just getting started, the rest of the West should be nervous.
