Andrés Perea Header Earns NYCFC 1-1 Draw With Red Bulls in Hudson River Derby
Substitute Andrés Perea headed in a 52nd-minute equalizer as New York City FC drew Red Bull New York 1-1, cancelling out Jorge Ruvalcaba's goal just before halftime.

The Hudson River Derby has a habit of refusing to pick a side, and on Saturday night it outdid itself. Two clubs walked into Sports Illustrated Stadium with identical records and walked out with identical records again.
Jorge Ruvalcaba scored from point-blank range just before halftime, substitute Andrés Perea answered with a header seven minutes after the break, and Red Bull New York and New York City FC settled for a 1-1 draw in front of 25,219 in Harrison, New Jersey. Both clubs now sit at 5-4-5 with 19 points, which is basically the Spider-Man pointing meme rendered as a league table.
A Feisty First Half Finally Cracks
The Red Bulls came out with the front foot planted. Cade Cowell and Emil Forsberg had shots blocked in the eighth minute, and Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty launched one high and wide from distance off a set piece in the 15th.
Then the temperature spiked. Raul Gustavo was booked in the 23rd minute and Marshall-Rutty joined him in referee Victor Rivas' notebook a minute later, after what NYCFC's own recap described as a mass confrontation that started with a tangle between Agustín Ojeda and Marshall-Rutty.
Matt Freese kept NYCFC level through the half-hour mark, stopping Matthew Dos Santos from a tight angle in the 30th minute and smothering Ronald Donkor's shot from the middle of the box two minutes later. The visitors then took a hit. Maxi Morález went down in the 35th minute, play was held up until the 39th, and Perea came on in his place. The AP reported that Morález was carted off with an apparent knee injury.
Just when the half looked destined to end scoreless, the Red Bulls struck. Cowell, breaking on the counter, slid a low cross in from the right, the ball took a deflection, and Ruvalcaba hammered it home from very close range in the 44th minute. It was his fifth goal of the season, according to the Red Bulls, and his second in his last three appearances. The lead survived seven minutes of added time.
Perea Flips the Script
NYCFC coach Pascal Jansen went to his bench again at halftime, sending on Malachi Jones for Hannes Wolf, and the move changed the night. Jones fired over within two minutes of his arrival and spent the rest of the evening making Ethan Horvath earn his paycheck.
The equalizer came from a dead ball. In the 52nd minute, Nicolás Fernández whipped a set-piece cross in from the right and Perea, the man who was only on the field because of Morález's injury, headed it into the bottom left corner from the center of the box. It was his first goal of the season, per the AP, and only his fourth appearance of the campaign after a leg injury in the 2025 MLS Cup playoffs ended his previous season.
From there the visitors had more of the ball and most of the momentum. Horvath saved Jones from the right side of the box in the 59th minute and again from outside the box in the 66th, while Fernández had another effort blocked in between.
The Crossbar Says No
The best chance to win it, though, belonged to the Red Bulls. Michael Bradley made a triple change in the 69th minute, sending on Gustav Berggren, Omar Valencia and Tim Parker for Forsberg, Dos Santos and Justin Che. Nine minutes later, Cowell swung in a set piece and Adri Mehmeti met it with his left foot from the center of the box, only for the ball to crash off the crossbar.
That was the turning point in a game that never quite turned. Inches separated Harrison from a statement win, and NYCFC immediately pushed back: Thiago Martins had a header blocked after a corner in the 79th minute, Jones dragged a left-footed shot just wide in the 82nd, and Ojeda pulled one wide from the middle of the box two minutes after that.
Freese made the last big stop for NYCFC, holding Julian Hall's left-footed effort in the 89th minute. In stoppage time, Kai Trewin and Perea both missed after a corner before Horvath got down to deny Jones one final time.
Jones Was the Spark, Freese the Wall
Perea gets the headline, but Jones was the most dangerous player on the field after the break. Off the bench at halftime, he took six shots, put four on target and was caught offside twice. Only Horvath stood in the way.
Freese, the U.S. national team goalkeeper as the AP noted, finished with four saves according to ESPN. His stops on Dos Santos and Donkor before the break kept the game scoreless until Ruvalcaba's goal, and his late hold on Hall preserved the point.
For the Red Bulls, Cowell was involved in nearly everything good: three shots, the low ball that created the opener and the delivery that rattled the bar.
Stats That Matter
- Possession: NYCFC held 56.6 percent of the ball and completed 397 passes to the Red Bulls' 282.
- Shots: NYCFC led 14-12 in attempts, but both teams put exactly five on target.
- Corners: The Red Bulls earned nine corners to NYCFC's three.
- Crosses: The Red Bulls tried 26 crosses and completed four, while NYCFC made 31 clearances to the Red Bulls' 10.
- Discipline: Seven yellow cards in total, four for the Red Bulls and three for NYCFC.
Two Clubs, One Record
The point extends good runs on both sides of the river. NYCFC are unbeaten in three after a seven-match winless stretch, and the Red Bulls are unbeaten in three after five straight without a win, as the AP noted. Each side had won twice in a row coming in, and the two were tied on 18 points before kickoff.
NYCFC still own the most recent bragging rights, having beaten the Red Bulls 3-1 in the U.S. Open Cup in late April, according to the club.
Bradley saw growth rather than two dropped points. "That can win balls back quickly, that is hard to play against and I thought what you see tonight is growth and maturity of the team, and so we have to continue to go in that direction," he said.
He also soaked in the occasion. "The atmosphere was amazing tonight," Bradley said, adding that "you could tell that there was a buzz in the stadium, and there's nothing better."
Closing Take
Two teams with the same record finishing with the same record is the most Hudson River Derby outcome imaginable. The Red Bulls will lose sleep over Mehmeti's crossbar, NYCFC will replay Jones' four shots on target, and in a rivalry this loud, nobody getting to brag might be the most painful result of all.
