Kalani Kossa-Rienzi was not supposed to be on the field. He came on in the 23rd minute only because Yeimar Gómez picked up a knock. Two minutes into the second half, he scored the goal that won the game.

Kossa-Rienzi's left-footed finish in the 47th minute gave the Seattle Sounders a 1-0 win over St. Louis CITY SC on Saturday night at Energizer Park, and Andrew Thomas made five saves to protect it in front of 22,423. It was Seattle's first road win of the season, according to the club, and it left St. Louis still looking for its first league win of the season.

St. Louis Owned the First Half

Seattle started brightly, with Jesús Ferreira forcing Roman Bürki into a save with a header in the second minute. After that, it was mostly St. Louis. Marcel Hartel tested Thomas from the left side of the box in the 13th minute, and Cedric Teuchert, making his first start of the season, forced another save from distance in the 27th. The home club noted it was Teuchert's first start since July 2025.

In between, the Sounders had to reshuffle. Play was stopped for a Gómez injury in the 21st minute, and he was replaced two minutes later by Kossa-Rienzi, a change Seattle described as unexpected. The pressure kept coming. Dante Polvara had a header blocked and a shot from a tight angle go wide in the 31st minute, and Hartel had another effort blocked in the 37th.

Seattle's best moment of the half came in the 39th minute, when Osaze De Rosario laid the ball back for Albert Rusnák, whose shot from outside the box was pushed out by Bürki. St. Louis finished the half with a flurry: Thomas saved from Teuchert in stoppage time, and Conrad Wallem and Chris Durkin both missed the target after a corner. St. Louis' own recap said CITY outshot Seattle eight to two in the first half. It still went into the locker room at 0-0.

Two Minutes and a Lot of Skill

The second half had barely started when Seattle struck. Ferreira won the ball deep in the St. Louis half, according to the club, and found Kossa-Rienzi near the top of the box. Seattle said he took one touch to settle and another to cut away from his marker before rolling a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner. A defender who had not expected to play was suddenly the match-winner.

St. Louis responded the way a home team with lots of the ball tends to: by piling on crosses and corners. Over the night the hosts won eight corners and sent in 30 crosses, but only four of those crosses found a teammate. Simon Becher had two shots from distance blocked in the 56th minute, and Seattle's recap credited Nouhou with a sliding challenge inside the box in the 55th minute that snuffed out a chance to equalize.

Seattle sat in and defended. Snyder Brunell nearly made it 2-0 in the 80th minute, but Bürki saved his near-post attempt off a Rusnák pass. A minute later came St. Louis' best spell of the night: Hartel fired a shot from outside the box that Thomas dived to save, and in the same minute Brendan McSorley's effort from the middle of the box, set up by Daniel Edelman, was also stopped by Thomas. In stoppage time Paul Arriola missed the target on a fast break that could have sealed it, but it did not matter.

Who Stood Out

Kalani Kossa-Rienzi: One shot, one goal. The Sounders said he added three tackles, an interception and eight recoveries, and that he won all four of his ground duels. He was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for his efforts, per the club.

Andrew Thomas: Five saves, including the double stop in the 81st minute. The Sounders said it was their second clean sheet of the season.

Jesús Ferreira: The assist, a header on target in the second minute and the defensive work that created the goal.

Albert Rusnák: Seattle's best first-half chance came off his foot from distance, and he later set up the Brunell look that nearly doubled the lead. Not flashy, but useful on a night when Seattle had very little of the ball.

For St. Louis, Hartel was the most dangerous player on the field with three shots, two on target, and Teuchert put both of his attempts on frame. Neither found a way past Thomas.

The Turning Point

The Gómez injury in the 21st minute. It forced Seattle into a change it did not want, and the player it brought on ended up scoring the winner. Football is weird like that.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: St. Louis 61.8 percent, Seattle 38.2 percent.
  • Shots: St. Louis 12, Seattle 8. On target: St. Louis 5, Seattle 4.
  • Saves: Thomas 5, Bürki 3.
  • Corners: St. Louis 8, Seattle 1.
  • Clearances: Seattle 38, St. Louis 25. Seattle also made 18 effective tackles to St. Louis' 8.

What It Means

Seattle is 2-0-1 with 6 points after opening with a 2-0 home win over Colorado and losing at Real Salt Lake. The club said its marathon stretch of road matches continues on Thursday, March 12, with a Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 match at the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place.

St. Louis falls to 0-1-2 with 1 point. After a 1-1 home draw with Charlotte in the opener, CITY has now lost two straight and has not scored in either, a 2-0 loss at San Diego and now this. Sergio Córdova made his CITY SC debut off the bench in the 57th minute, per the club. Next up is another trip to California, to face LAFC at BMO Stadium on Saturday, March 14.

Closing Take

This was a classic road win, the kind that does not make anybody's highlight reel apart from one moment. St. Louis had the ball, the corners and the crosses. Seattle had a goalkeeper who would not budge and a substitute defender who played like a striker for exactly one sequence. Sometimes that is all you need. Just ask the Sounders.
