For 45 minutes, Sporting Kansas City had a plan, and it was working. Then Lasse Berg Johnsen went into one tackle too many on the stroke of halftime, picked up his second yellow card, and the plan went out the window.

The Houston Dynamo took full advantage of the extra man, beating 10-man Sporting Kansas City 2-0 on a partly cloudy Saturday night at Sporting Park, in front of 17,268 fans. Guilherme broke the deadlock with a low strike from the top of the box in the 55th minute, Agustín Bouzat punished a Sporting turnover in the 71st, and Jonathan Bond made four saves for Houston's second straight shutout win.

Even Until It Wasn't

The first half was a grind. The Dynamo said the teams combined for 15 fouls before the break, and the chances were scattered. Lucas Halter headed over from a Houston corner in the third minute, and Agustín Resch nodded wide off another in the seventh. Sporting's best look came in the 14th minute, when Dejan Joveljic slipped Capita through on the right and Bond saved low.

Houston nearly went ahead in the 25th minute. Lawrence Ennali drove into the box down the right and cut the ball back to Héctor Herrera, whose shot was headed for the net until Jake Davis cleared it off the goal line, according to both clubs.

Then came the moment that decided the night. Berg Johnsen, already booked in the 11th minute, went into a hard challenge on Houston captain Artur right before halftime. Per the Dynamo, referee Sergii Boiko played advantage, then came back and showed the second yellow. Sporting went into the locker room level on the scoreboard and a man down for the entire second half.

Sporting coach Raphael Wicky did not hide from it. "Obviously, the red card changes everything," he said, per Sporting KC. "I believe that it was an even first half."

Houston Turns the Screw

The Dynamo came out of the break flying. Herrera headed over in the 47th minute, Artur forced a diving stop from Stefan Cleveland in the 49th, and Ezequiel Ponce had two chances in the 50th. The goal felt inevitable, and it arrived in the 55th minute. Jack McGlynn found Guilherme on the break, and the Brazilian's low drive from distance squirmed under Cleveland and into the bottom right corner.

It was Guilherme's 10th goal of the season. The Dynamo noted he now has five goals in his last eight MLS matches and had scored in back-to-back games after finding the net against Austin a week earlier. McGlynn's assist was his fifth of the year.

The second goal was a gift. Houston's press forced Calvin Harris into a giveaway, per the Dynamo, and Bouzat intercepted inside the box, rounding off the move with a left-footed finish into the bottom right corner in the 71st minute. It was Bouzat's first goal of the season.

Down two goals and a man, Sporting finally found some attacking life late. Joveljic forced Bond into a save in the 76th minute, and substitutes Jayden Reid and Shapi Suleymanov both tested him in the 87th and 88th. Bond was equal to all of it, finishing with four saves.

The Captain, the All-Star and the Keeper

Guilherme was the difference-maker, but Houston's control was the real story. The Dynamo completed 660 of 718 passes and held 64.3 percent of the ball, which is what playing against 10 men for a half looks like when you do it properly. McGlynn pulled the strings, Artur and Herrera kept the midfield ticking, and Bond took care of the rare moments Sporting broke through.

The shutout was Houston's sixth clean sheet of the season, per the club, and it pushed the Dynamo's unbeaten run in MLS to five matches.

For Sporting, there were some positives buried in the frustration. Moisés Mosquera made his first start for the club, and Wicky liked what he saw. "I think Moises did really well," he said. "He will add lots of athleticism and pace." Mosquera came off in the 65th minute, which Wicky said was planned because the defender was on a minutes restriction.

The Tackle That Flipped the Script

Every coach talks about game management, and Berg Johnsen's second booking is a case study. Wicky was blunt about it. "I think he was late in that tackle and that was the one too much," he said, before adding, "But we don't lose because of one player. We lose as a team and we win as a team."

Midfielder Zorhan Bassong, who later left the game with an injury in the 85th minute, put it in emotional terms. "Maybe we let our emotions get control of us," he said. On playing a man down after the break, he added: "We can not afford to make mistakes because it will cost us the game."

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Houston 64.3 percent, Sporting 35.7 percent.
  • Passes: Houston 718, Sporting 398.
  • Shots: Houston 14, Sporting 6, with four on target apiece.
  • Saves: Jonathan Bond 4, Stefan Cleveland 1.
  • Corners: Houston 6, Sporting 2.

Houston Heats Up, Sporting Searches

Houston moved to 9-2-6 with 29 points and has now won back-to-back games without conceding. Next up is a trip to New England on Aug. 8.

Sporting fell to 4-2-12 with 14 points and has lost two straight, following last weekend's 4-0 defeat at LAFC. Wicky did not sugarcoat it. "The two goals we gave are too easy. They didn't have to work hard for that and that's why we're sitting here now. It's not the first time this season," he said. Sporting is off next weekend before visiting Colorado on Aug. 15.

Hard Mode

In video game terms, Sporting spent the second half on hard mode with one button missing from the controller, and Houston knew every combo. The Dynamo did not need to be spectacular. They needed to be patient, ruthless and tidy, and they were all three. Patient, ruthless and tidy is what a contender looks like in August.
