Dante Polvara's First MLS Goal Lifts St. Louis CITY SC Past First-Place Dynamo 2-1
Simon Becher scored, Ibrahim Aliyu answered and Dante Polvara netted his first MLS goal in the 85th minute as St. Louis CITY SC beat Houston Dynamo FC 2-1 to run its MLS unbeaten streak to 11.

Dante Polvara picked a pretty good night to score his first MLS goal. With St. Louis CITY SC and Houston Dynamo FC level in the 85th minute at Energizer Park, the center back found himself in the middle of the box and slotted a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner.
St. Louis CITY SC 2, Houston Dynamo FC 1. Simon Becher opened the scoring, substitute Ibrahim Aliyu equalized for the visitors, and Polvara settled it late on Saturday night. The win stretched St. Louis' MLS unbeaten streak to 11 matches, and it snapped a five-game winning streak for a Houston side that, per MLSsoccer.com, arrived atop the Western Conference on an eight-game unbeaten run.
Becher Breaks the Wall
Houston arrived with a defense that had become a vault. According to St. Louis, the Dynamo had gone 473 minutes without conceding across five MLS matches. They nearly took the lead early, too, with Mateusz Bogusz heading just wide in the 11th minute and then smacking the crossbar from outside the box in the 14th.
St. Louis cracked the vault in the 23rd minute. Alexandru Matan found Becher in the center of the box, and the striker sent a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. The club said it was his fifth goal of the season, and MLSsoccer.com said it was his third in as many games. ESPN credits Matan with the assist, which St. Louis said was his first for the club; the club also listed Conrad Wallem.
Houston responded with a long spell of pressure. Between the 29th and 31st minutes, Agustín Bouzat and Artur had efforts blocked, Roman Bürki saved Jack McGlynn's shot from the right side of the box, and then Bürki saved an Agustin Resch header from a McGlynn cross. Marcelo Saracchi had two more shots blocked before halftime, and St. Louis went into the break up 1-0.
A Disallowed Goal, an Equalizer and a Winner
Houston kept pushing after the break, sending on Héctor Herrera and Aliyu in the 57th minute. In the 66th, Bogusz thought he had finally beaten Bürki, only for the goal to be ruled out after a VAR review. It was that kind of night for Bogusz, who finished with five shots, a crossbar and a disallowed goal to show for it.
The equalizer came nine minutes later. Bürki saved a Bogusz shot from the center of the box in the 75th minute, and in the same minute Aliyu scored from very close range, a right-footed finish into the bottom right corner. Eighteen minutes after coming on, the substitute had Houston level.
St. Louis answered quickly. After earning a corner in the 82nd minute, the hosts went ahead in the 85th, when Polvara struck from the center of the box. The club said it was his first career MLS goal and his first for St. Louis.
The finish was frantic. The fourth official added seven minutes, McGlynn fired high and wide, Jonathan Bond saved from substitute Carlo Holse, Polvara nearly added a second, and Resch headed wide from a corner in the seventh minute of stoppage time. Bogusz's last shot was blocked, and St. Louis held on.
The Stars
Polvara was the hero, but he was not a one-hit wonder. The center back took three shots and put two on target, including a 55th-minute effort that forced Bond into a save.
Becher scored with his only shot of the night, though he also committed five fouls and picked up a yellow card. Bürki made three saves, all of them meaningful. Tomás Ostrák, making his first start of the season according to the club, had two early efforts blocked inside the box before Holse replaced him in the 62nd minute.
For Houston, Aliyu changed the game off the bench, and Bogusz was the most dangerous attacker on the field. He just could not find the right side of the scoresheet.
Coach Yoann Damet loved the effort. "The way we showed up tonight, the spirit for 98, 99 minutes was incredible," he said.
The Turning Point
The 66th-minute VAR decision. Houston had been building pressure all night, and an equalizer at that moment would have given the Dynamo the momentum with plenty of time left. Instead, the goal came off the board, St. Louis kept its lead for another nine minutes, and when Aliyu did equalize, the hosts had the composure to go back in front almost immediately.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Houston outshot St. Louis 18-9, but each side put four on target.
- Saves: Bürki made three; Bond made two.
- Corners: Houston 6, St. Louis 1.
- Clearances: St. Louis made 23 to Houston's 12.
- Discipline: Seven yellow cards in all, four for St. Louis and three for Houston, with the hosts committing 18 fouls to Houston's 10.
What It Means
St. Louis improved to 9-6-6 with 33 points, and MLSsoccer.com noted that puts the club level on points with fourth-place San Jose. The club said its unbeaten streak now stands at 12 matches across all competitions, and that its 11-match MLS run is a new league record for the 2026 regular season. MLSsoccer.com put that run at eight wins and three draws. Next up is FC Dallas at Energizer Park on Sunday Night Soccer, Aug. 30.
Becher sounded like a man who believes the hype. "We have that confidence now in our identity and how we can go out and play against anybody in this league," he said.
Houston fell to 12-2-7 with 38 points. With Vancouver beating FC Dallas the same night, MLSsoccer.com reported that the Whitecaps moved above Houston into first in the West. The Dynamo return home to face San Jose on Saturday.
Closing Take
Damet kept it simple afterward: "The key is the team. It's as simple as that." On a night when a center back scored the winner and a first-place defense finally cracked, it is hard to argue. St. Louis is not sneaking up on anybody anymore. This team is the plot twist the West did not see coming.
