St. Louis CITY SC needed an own goal to get going on Saturday afternoon. After that, the hosts did not need any more help from Austin FC.

Guilherme Biro turned the ball into his own net in the 40th minute, center back Fallou Fall scored the first MLS goal of his career early in the second half, and Daniel Edelman finished it off in the 90th as St. Louis beat Austin 3-0 at Energizer Park. It was a clean, cold-blooded sendoff into the World Cup break for one side, and a fourth straight MLS match without a win for the other.

A Slow Burn, Then a Gift

The first half was a grind. Austin's best early look came from an unlikely source in the 10th minute, when center back Jon Bell got a shot away from the middle of the box and Ben Lundt saved it. Rafael Santos dragged an effort just wide for St. Louis a few minutes later, and Biro and Joseph Rosales both missed the target for Austin in the 16th.

St. Louis then lost Dante Polvara to an injury in the 23rd minute, with Lukas MacNaughton coming on in the back three. The hosts kept probing anyway. Eduard Löwen sent a direct free kick over the bar in the 34th, and Marcel Hartel had a shot blocked a minute later.

The breakthrough was not pretty. In the 40th minute, according to Austin, St. Louis worked the ball down the right flank and swung in a cross that Biro diverted into his own goal. Austin had one more chance before the break, a Facundo Torres strike from distance that Lundt saved in first-half stoppage time, and the hosts went to the locker room up 1-0.

Fall Doubles It, Edelman Seals It

St. Louis came out of halftime with more edge. Löwen smacked the crossbar from outside the box in the 52nd minute, and four minutes later the pressure turned into a second goal. Brad Stuver pushed Chris Durkin's shot behind for a corner, and when the delivery came in, Fall hit a left-footed shot from the middle of the box into the top right corner. The club said it was his first career MLS goal and his first for St. Louis.

Austin's response was Oleksandr Svatok heading a set piece just wide in the 60th minute and not much else. Austin sent on Brandon Vázquez and Jayden Nelson on the hour, then three more substitutes later, and still managed only two shots on target all afternoon.

St. Louis, meanwhile, kept testing Stuver. He saved from Santos in the 63rd, from Hartel in the 65th and from Löwen in the 82nd. The third goal finally came in the 90th minute, two minutes after Cedric Teuchert came off the bench. Teuchert found Edelman, and the midfielder finished with his right foot from the right side of the six-yard box, high into the net. The club noted it was Edelman's first goal with St. Louis and the third of his MLS career, and Teuchert's sixth career MLS assist and his first of 2026.

The Performers

Fallou Fall made his only shot count: a first career MLS goal from a center back, and a spot on MLSsoccer.com's Team of the Matchday.

Daniel Edelman shook off an early knock (play was stopped for him in the fifth minute) to score the clinching third goal.

Eduard Löwen and Marcel Hartel each fired four shots. Löwen hit the woodwork and forced a late save; Hartel was the engine behind several of the hosts' best second-half moves, setting up shots for Durkin and Edelman.

Ben Lundt made two saves for the clean sheet, which the club said was his first of the 2026 season and the third of his MLS career. It was also St. Louis' second shutout of the 2026 MLS regular season, per the club.

For Austin, Brad Stuver was the reason the margin stayed respectable for so long, with four saves. Bell, a center back, finished with two of Austin's eight shots, which says plenty about how little the attack generated.

Where It Swung

The own goal broke the dam, but the sequence in the 52nd to 56th minutes decided the afternoon. Löwen's shot off the bar told Austin the second half would not be quieter than the first, and Fall's goal from the ensuing pressure ended any real hope of a comeback. Down two with a toothless attack, Austin never looked like a team that could score twice.

By the Numbers

  • Shots: St. Louis 16, Austin 8. On target: 6 to 2.
  • Possession: Austin 53.3 percent, St. Louis 46.7 percent, the rare case where the ball did the visitors no good.
  • Tackles: St. Louis 17 (12 effective), Austin 4.
  • Saves: Stuver 4, Lundt 2.
  • Clearances: St. Louis 30, Austin 19.

The Standings Picture

St. Louis improves to 4-4-6 with 16 points, and the club said the win lifted it past both Austin and the Portland Timbers into 12th place in the Western Conference. It also extended an unbeaten run the club counts at five matches across all competitions, including a U.S. Open Cup win earlier in the week. In MLS play alone, St. Louis has three wins and a draw from its last four, and this result flipped the script on a 2-0 loss at Austin on May 3.

Austin falls to 3-5-7 with 14 points. The last three MLS matches have been ugly: a 5-0 loss at San Diego FC on May 13, a 2-1 home loss to Sporting Kansas City on May 16 and now this. That is one goal scored and 10 conceded across three games, and a draw at Minnesota United FC on May 10 is the only point Austin has taken from its last four.

St. Louis returns from the break against Sporting Kansas City at Energizer Park on July 16. Austin hosts Seattle Sounders FC on July 22.

Summer Reading

Two months off can reset a season. For Austin, that is the best news of the day: this team needs a full reboot, the kind of hard pivot a struggling TV show makes between seasons when it brings in new writers. St. Louis, by contrast, just wants the episodes to keep coming.
