Kristijan Kahlina's Career-High 10 Saves, Pep Biel Goal Earn Charlotte FC a 1-1 Draw at St. Louis CITY SC
Kristijan Kahlina made a career-high 10 saves and Pep Biel canceled out Marcel Hartel's 60th-minute strike as Charlotte FC drew 1-1 with St. Louis CITY SC at Energizer Park.

St. Louis CITY SC spent Saturday afternoon at Energizer Park stuck in its own version of Groundhog Day. Wind up, shoot, watch Kristijan Kahlina get a glove to it, reset, repeat. Twenty-two shots, 11 of them on target, and exactly one found the net.
That is how a team that controlled most of a match walks away with a 1-1 draw. Marcel Hartel put the hosts ahead with a strike from outside the box in the 60th minute, Pep Biel answered for Charlotte FC 13 minutes later, and Kahlina made 10 saves, a career high according to Charlotte, to send both clubs out of the season opener with a point apiece.
St. Louis Knocks, Kahlina Answers
The pattern showed up early. Rafael Santos forced Kahlina into a save in the 13th minute, Dante Polvara headed wide from very close range off a corner in the 19th, and Hartel tested the Charlotte keeper from distance in the 24th. Chris Durkin piled up four shots before halftime, and Kahlina saved the last of them, from the left side of the box, in first-half stoppage time.
Charlotte mostly lived on scraps. Biel tried his luck from more than 40 yards in the 11th minute, which is either visionary or a cry for help depending on your mood, and it sailed high and wide. Liel Abada produced the visitors' best first-half moment in the 40th minute, when his shot from outside the box drew a save from Roman Bürki. By the break, St. Louis had outshot Charlotte 10-3, and the scoreboard still read 0-0. Andrew Privett and Timo Baumgartl had both been booked along the way.
The second half opened in the same key. Hartel had another shot saved in the 46th minute and Santos was denied again in the 51st. Abada forced a second save out of Bürki in the 58th, and a minute later St. Louis sent on Brendan McSorley for Jeong Sang-Bin.
The Turning Point: Biel Spoils the Party
In the 60th minute, Simon Becher found Hartel outside the area, and Hartel drilled a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. After an hour of knocking, St. Louis was finally through the door, and the floodgates looked ready to open.
Instead, Charlotte made its move. Jaziel Orozco was booked in the 66th minute, and three minutes later the visitors made a triple change, sending on David Schnegg, Djibril Diani and Kerwin Vargas. Wilfried Zaha picked up a yellow card in the 71st minute, then turned villain in the best possible way two minutes later. He slipped Biel into the box, and Biel, working from a tight angle on the left, finished with his left foot into the bottom right corner. One shot on target all day for Biel, one goal.
That equalizer is the hinge of the whole match. St. Louis had done everything except put the game away, and Charlotte needed only one clean look to make the hosts pay for it.
The rest was a shooting gallery. Hartel was stopped again in the 75th minute, Becher in the 81st, and McSorley in the 90th. Durkin went off injured in the 83rd minute, replaced by Miguel Perez. Seven minutes of stoppage time brought three more St. Louis attempts. Cedric Teuchert sent one from outside the box just wide, then had a shot from the middle of the box saved, and McSorley's last left-footed try was saved in the bottom left corner. Whistle. Groundhog Day, final take.
Star Watch
Kahlina was the whole story. Ten saves, a career high per the club, and enough of them late to keep the point safe. Charlotte noted that his save totals in the club's season openers have gone one, four, three, five and now 10, and the performance earned him a spot on the league's first Team of the Matchday of 2026, his eighth such honor since joining Charlotte in 2022.
Hartel did everything but win it. He put all four of his shots on target, scored once and watched Kahlina stop the other three. St. Louis said he has now scored five goals in his last six regular season matches, and he landed on the bench of that Team of the Matchday.
Biel made his one shot on target count. Zaha drew six fouls and delivered the assist, and Abada was Charlotte's most dangerous threat before he came off, with both of his shots on target.
For St. Louis, Becher added an assist and four shots, while Daniel Edelman, making his St. Louis debut according to the club, set up three chances in ESPN's play-by-play.

What It Means
Both teams leave at 0-1-0 with 1 point. For Charlotte, a road point against a side that piled up that much pressure is a decent day at the office. The club said it was one of only two of the seven Eastern Conference teams playing on the road to take a point on the opening weekend, which left it in a fifth-place spot in the table heading into Matchday 2. Charlotte has also taken at least one point in each of its last three openers, per the club. Next up is a trip to the LA Galaxy on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 10:30 p.m. ET.
St. Louis will feel this one. The volume was there and the chances were real, but the finishing ran into a wall in goal. CITY SC visits San Diego FC on Sunday, March 1, with kickoff at 8:15 p.m. CT.
Closing Take
Every video game has a final boss that makes you throw the controller across the room. On opening weekend, St. Louis drew Kahlina, burned through 22 shots worth of continues and still could not get past him. That is not a crisis for CITY SC. It is just a really annoying way to start a season.
