Marcel Hartel was on the field for about 30 minutes on Saturday night. He took seven shots. One of them saved St. Louis CITY SC from a deflating home loss, and the rest kept the Real Salt Lake defense scrambling until the final whistle.

St. Louis CITY SC and Real Salt Lake drew 1-1 in front of 22,423 fans at a rainy Energizer Park, with Sergi Solans putting the visitors ahead in the 60th minute and Hartel, a 65th-minute substitute, pouncing on a Cabral mistake to equalize in the 72nd. Per the club, the draw stretched St. Louis' unbeaten run to nine matches across all competitions, the longest in club history. Real Salt Lake, meanwhile, snapped a two-game losing streak and left with a point it had to fight for.

All St. Louis, Then a Gut Punch

The first half was a one-way street. St. Louis piled up seven shots before the break, and Real Salt Lake did not attempt a single one. Conrad Wallem forced Cabral into a save in the 18th minute, Chris Durkin and Eduard Löwen kept trying from distance, and Simon Becher pulled a shot wide in the 42nd. RSL's recap also mentioned a Jeong Sang-Bin goal ruled out for offside. It was physical, too: five yellow cards were handed out before halftime, three to RSL.

Real Salt Lake also lost Griffin Dillon just before the break. He was replaced by Stijn Spierings in first-half stoppage time, and the club later said he had suffered a broken fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

Pablo Mastroeni made another change at halftime, sending on Saba Lobjanidze for Lineker Rodrigues, who was making his first MLS start, per RSL. It changed the game. Samuel Junqua's airborne left-footed volley forced Roman Bürki into a diving save in the 55th minute, Spierings headed just over off a corner in the 58th, and two minutes later the visitors scored. Lobjanidze, at the top of the box, played Solans in behind with a backheel, and Solans went around Bürki and finished from the left side of the six-yard box. Just like that, the team that had not taken a shot in the first half was ahead.

Damet's Bench Answers

Yoann Damet responded quickly, bringing on Hartel and Alexandru Matan in the 65th minute. Matan, making his first appearance for St. Louis, according to the club, had two efforts in quick succession, one sailing high and wide and the other blocked, and the home side won three corners in seven minutes.

Then the gift arrived. In the 72nd minute, Cabral's attempted pass to Noel Caliskan went straight to Hartel, according to RSL, and the German made no mistake with his right foot to make it 1-1. Hartel was not done. He had a shot saved by Cabral and two more blocked in the 74th minute alone, another blocked in the 76th, a header wide in the 83rd and a shot saved in the 90th. Real Salt Lake had its own late chance when Lobjanidze fired from a tight angle on the left in the 81st minute, but Bürki saved.

The Sub and the Spark

Hartel's numbers are absurd for a half hour of work: seven shots, three on target and a goal. St. Louis said it was his sixth goal of the season and ninth across all competitions, and that he now has five goal contributions, three goals and two assists, in his last five games.

On the other side, Lobjanidze was the spark RSL needed. The club said the Georgian international has two assists in three appearances since joining on July 1, all off the bench. Mastroeni was effusive about his impact. "Brave in the moment, finding a lot of passes that others might not, facing the goal, getting the right passes through the middle or wide," he said, per RSL.

Solans' goal was his seventh of the season, which RSL said moved the 23-year-old Spaniard into sole possession of the club's scoring lead. It was also his first goal since May 16 against Colorado.

One Pass Changes the Night

It is the 72nd minute, and it is not close. Real Salt Lake had absorbed more than an hour of St. Louis pressure, made 37 clearances and finally found a lead. Then a goalkeeper's pass went to the wrong shirt. Without that mistake, RSL may well have ground out a road win. Instead, it settled for its seventh straight road match without a win, per the club.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: St. Louis 66.9 percent, Real Salt Lake 33.1 percent.
  • Shots: St. Louis 20, Real Salt Lake 9. On target: 4 to 3.
  • Crosses: St. Louis sent in 31 and completed four.
  • Clearances: Real Salt Lake 37, St. Louis 17.
  • Cards: Six yellows, three for each side.

Streaks Bent, Not Broken

St. Louis moved to 7-5-6 with 26 points. The draw ended a three-game winning run that started when MLS returned from its break, but the club's broader unbeaten streak lives on. After a bye week, St. Louis travels to San Jose on Aug. 15.

Real Salt Lake moved to 8-3-6 with 27 points, and its own recap had the club fifth in the Western Conference. It was RSL's first point since the World Cup break, the club said. Next up is a Leagues Cup homestand, opening against Tigres on Aug. 4. "You never know when your opportunity will come next and you have to be ready to take the chance when the opportunity presents itself," Mastroeni said, asked about more minutes for Lobjanidze in Leagues Cup.

Super Sub Saturday

There is a reason every superhero movie saves its biggest moment for the third act. Hartel walked on in the 65th minute, rewrote the ending seven minutes later and spent the rest of the night trying to make it a sequel. St. Louis did not get the win, but it got a reminder of how dangerous it can be when the bench has a cape.
