Alexandru Matan assisted Carlo Holse and Tomas Totland, Simon Becher added a third, and St. Louis CITY SC beat Toronto FC 3-1 to stay unbeaten in 16 league games.

Alexandru Matan does not need the ball for long. On Saturday night at Energizer Park, he needed it twice to bend the game toward St. Louis: a through ball for Carlo Holse in the 41st minute, then a pass that Tomas Totland buried in the 54th.

St. Louis CITY SC beat Toronto FC 3-1, with Simon Becher adding a third off the bench before Theo Corbeanu's stoppage-time header made the score look a little kinder for the visitors. MLS says the result stretched St. Louis' league unbeaten run to 16 games, and the club counts 18 straight without a loss across all competitions.

A Slow Burn, Then Holse

For 40 minutes this was a grind. St. Louis had most of the ball and most of the looks: Jeong Sang-Bin forced Luka Gavran into a save in the fourth minute, Timo Baumgartl just missed off a corner in the sixth, and Gavran stopped Matan from inside the six-yard box in the ninth. Toronto's best moments were long-range efforts from Derrick Etienne Jr. and Josh Sargent, both blocked.

The yellow cards came early, with Walker Zimmerman booked in the 23rd minute and Conrad Wallem in the 28th, but the breakthrough did not arrive until the 41st. Matan threaded a through ball into the box and Holse hammered a left-footed finish straight down the middle. Per St. Louis, it was Holse's third goal of the season and his third straight match with a goal at Energizer Park.

Holse nearly doubled it before the break, but his shot in the 44th minute was blocked, and St. Louis took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

St. Louis Pulls Away

St. Louis sent on Becher for Jeong at the break, and the move paid off almost immediately in volume. Gavran saved from Rafael Navarro in the 48th minute and from Becher in the 52nd, then watched Becher head wide off the ensuing corner. Two minutes later, Matan found Totland in the middle of the box and he drove a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. 2-0.

Toronto's night got worse in the 56th minute when Zimmerman, who had already needed treatment, was replaced by Nicksoen Gomis because of an injury. Robin Fraser then emptied part of his bench, bringing on Corbeanu, Jonathan Osorio and Zane Monlouis. Per Toronto, it was captain Osorio's first appearance since July 31 after recovering from a knee injury.

It did not slow St. Louis down. In the 68th minute, Wallem picked off a loose Toronto pass, by the Reds' account, and played Becher through. The substitute finished low into the bottom left corner for 3-0. Per St. Louis, it was Becher's eighth goal of the season, and he has now scored in back-to-back matches across MLS and U.S. Open Cup play.

Late Drama, and Some Consolation

St. Louis thought it had a fourth in the 89th minute when Damion Downs found the net, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review, with ESPN's feed logging Holse offside on the play. Toronto finally broke through in the seventh minute of stoppage time, when Alonso Coello delivered a set piece and Corbeanu headed it in from very close range. Per Toronto, that was Coello's eighth assist of the season and Corbeanu's fifth goal contribution. There was a neat twist in it: Fraser's only lineup change from the Orlando loss had been Coello starting in place of Corbeanu.

Matan, the Quiet Conductor

Matan finished with two assists and two shots, one on target, before leaving in the 78th minute. St. Louis says those were his fourth and fifth assists of the season. He was the hinge of almost everything good St. Louis did in the final third, and MLS put him on the Team of the Matchday bench.

Totland made the starting XI of that same team. His goal was his third of the season, per the club, and he has five goal contributions in his last five matches.

Becher deserves credit, too. He came on at halftime, took four shots, put two on target and scored.

For Toronto, Gavran made five saves and was the main reason this did not get uglier sooner. Richie Laryea, meanwhile, made his 150th MLS appearance for the club, joining Osorio as the only active Reds to reach that mark.

The Turning Point

Totland's goal in the 54th minute changed the shape of the game. At 1-0, Toronto could stay compact and wait for a set piece. At 2-0, Fraser had to chase, and six minutes after his triple change St. Louis found the space for a third. The second goal turned a tight contest into a procession.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: St. Louis 18, Toronto 10. On target, it was 8 to 2.
  • Possession: St. Louis held 60.9 percent of the ball.
  • Saves: Gavran made 5, Roman Bürki just 1.
  • Defensive work: Toronto made 18 interceptions and 21 tackles while chasing the game.
  • Corners: St. Louis won 8 to Toronto's 4.

What It Means

St. Louis moved to 12-8-6 with 44 points. The club says it has scored 15 goals in its last five MLS matches for the first time since its inaugural five games in 2023, that it has hit three or more goals in eight of 13 matches since the World Cup break, and that the 16-match league unbeaten run matches the longest in MLS over the past decade. MLS also noted the club had just reached the 2026 U.S. Open Cup final. Next up is a first-ever trip to Sports Illustrated Stadium to face the Red Bulls on Sept. 26.

Toronto dropped to 6-11-9 with 29 points after a second straight road defeat, following a 3-0 loss at Orlando City. Fraser's group wraps up a three-game road swing at Supporters' Shield leaders Nashville SC on Sept. 26.

Closing Take

St. Louis are playing like a band on a sold-out tour: every night a different soloist, same encore. Holse, Totland and Becher took turns at the mic, and Matan wrote the setlist. Toronto, for now, are the opening act.
