Two minutes into Saturday night's match, BC Place had exactly the script it wanted. Emmanuel Sabbi pounced on a turnover and curled one into the bottom left corner, and the Western Conference leaders were up before most fans had found their seats. Then St. Louis CITY SC took the pen and rewrote the whole thing.

St. Louis beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1, scoring three times in a 22-minute burst before halftime and then smothering the hosts after the break. According to both clubs, it was St. Louis's first-ever win in Vancouver, and St. Louis say it stretched their unbeaten run to 14 matches across all competitions. Vancouver's own site called it the visitors' longest-ever unbeaten streak. That is not a hot week. That is a movement.

Sabbi Strikes, Takaoka Stands Tall

Vancouver came out flying. Sabbi's opener came on the home side's first shot on target, a left-footed effort from outside the box, and five minutes later Thomas Müller sent him through on a break for a chance at a second that slid just wide.

St. Louis needed a while to settle. Carlo Holse fired high in the 14th minute, and in the 20th, Simon Becher went through on Yohei Takaoka off a Daniel Edelman pass, only for the Vancouver keeper to save. It was a good stop. It was also a warning.

Twenty-Two Minutes of Chaos

Three minutes later, Becher made no mistake. Alexandru Matan slipped a through ball into the center of the box, and Becher lashed a left-footed finish high into the net. 1-1. According to the club, it was his fifth goal in five consecutive matches and his team-leading seventh of the season.

The middle of the half got scrappy. Müller was booked in the 26th minute, Rayan Elloumi headed just wide in the 28th, and Roman Bürki had to fly to keep out a long-range Mihail Gherasimencov drive in the 33rd. Conrad Wallem picked up a yellow card three minutes later.

Then St. Louis went for the throat. In the 41st minute Wallem fed Edelman, whose ball across the face of goal found Tomas Totland, and Totland slotted a right-footed finish into the bottom left corner. Four minutes later, the two swapped roles: Totland set up Wallem, who drove a left-footed shot from the center of the box into the bottom right corner. 3-1 at halftime, and the Whitecaps were in serious trouble.

The Turning Point: The Second Half That Never Started for Vancouver

Jesper Sørensen made a triple change at the break, sending on Oliver Larraz, Brian White and Cheikh Sabaly. It did not move the needle. St. Louis held Vancouver without a shot on target for the entire second half, per the club, and the ESPN data backs that up: the Whitecaps' eight second-half attempts were all off target or blocked.

White was the most frustrated man in the building. He took four shots off the bench, including three headers, and none of them tested Bürki. Ryan Gauld, on for Sabbi in the 59th minute, missed from the right side of the box and fired over from distance.

Vancouver's best hope arrived around the 75th minute, when, according to the Whitecaps' site, referee Michael Venne pointed to the spot for a Wallem handball. A VAR review overturned it, and the official match data logs the decision as no penalty. That was effectively the end of the comeback.

St. Louis even found time for some debuts. Club-record signing Rafael Navarro made his first appearance for the club after arriving from the Colorado Rapids, and Damion Downs made his MLS debut late on, forcing a save from Takaoka in stoppage time. Vancouver handed newcomer Yadaly Diaby his MLS and Whitecaps debut in the 82nd minute.

The Standouts

Simon Becher put all three of his shots on target and scored the equalizer that flipped the night. The club says he now leads St. Louis with 12 goal contributions this MLS season (seven goals, five assists).

Conrad Wallem scored his first goal of the year. The club also credits him with a secondary assist on Totland's go-ahead goal and four assists over his last five matches.

Tomas Totland had a goal and an assist inside four minutes. That is a nice way to fill out a box score.

Roman Bürki made only two saves, but the airborne stop on Gherasimencov at 1-1 was a big one.

Emmanuel Sabbi was Vancouver's bright spot before he came off. The Whitecaps say his goal was his fifth of the season across all competitions.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on target: St. Louis 6, Vancouver 3, despite Vancouver taking 15 shots to St. Louis's 11.
  • Possession: St. Louis held 53.2 percent of the ball.
  • Second-half shots on target for Vancouver: zero.
  • Clearances: St. Louis 21, Vancouver 8, a sign of how comfortable the visitors were defending their box.
  • Discipline: Seven yellow cards in all, four for Vancouver and three for St. Louis, with 18 fouls apiece.

What It Means

St. Louis improve to 10-7-6 with 37 points, and their club site says the win moved them into fifth place in the Western Conference. It was their 13th straight MLS match without a loss, and the club notes it was the first time since 2023 that St. Louis have reached 10 regular-season wins. Next up is a Wednesday trip to the Portland Timbers.

Vancouver drop to 13-4-5 with 43 points but, per the Whitecaps, remain at the top of the Western Conference. The loss snapped a two-match winning run, and with 22,320 at BC Place according to the club, it stung in front of a big crowd. The Whitecaps host LA Galaxy on Wednesday.

Closing Take

Watching St. Louis right now feels a bit like Groundhog Day: every week, Becher scores, CITY SC refuse to lose, and somebody new learns the hard way. Vancouver are still top of the West, but on Saturday they looked like a team that had just met a genuine rival for the throne.
