Orlando City were six minutes from turning two deficits into three points. Then Djordje Mihailovic let one rip from distance, Maxime Crépeau could only parry it, and Matheus Pereira was standing in exactly the right place to ruin the Lions' night.

Toronto FC and Orlando City SC drew 3-3 at BMO Field on Wednesday, a game that featured two Toronto leads, an Orlando turnaround and a late equalizer that nobody in purple wanted to see. Lost in the chaos were two pieces of history: Martín Ojeda became Orlando's all-time leading goalscorer, and Antoine Griezmann became the first player in MLS history to record at least one goal contribution in 11 of his first 13 MLS appearances, according to MLS.

Toronto Strike First, Then Blink

The hosts came out flying, fresh off a weekend derby win over CF Montréal. Josh Sargent pulled a shot just wide in the eighth minute after a Niklas Dorsch setup, Crépeau had to save from Corbeanu in the 15th, and Lewis Morgan dragged one past the post in the 18th. The breakthrough came in the 26th minute, when Theo Corbeanu whipped in a cross and Morgan, per Toronto's recap, guided a downward header past Crépeau into the bottom right corner. It was Morgan's second goal in as many matches.

Orlando, who held the ball for 62.6 percent of the night, slowly found their footing. A flurry around the 38th and 39th minutes produced a blocked David Brekalo header and a Martín Ojeda miss. Then, in the 44th minute, Ojeda's cross struck Pereira's hand in the box, and the referee pointed to the spot. Ojeda, wearing the armband in place of the injured Robin Jansson, slotted it into the bottom left corner in first-half stoppage time. Orlando said it was his 48th goal for the club across all competitions, the most in club history.

A Wild Second Half

Toronto went back in front four minutes after the break. Dorsch intercepted a loose pass and raced through, Crépeau saved his one-on-one attempt, and Dániel Sallói steered the rebound into Corbeanu's path for a close-range finish. Corbeanu had now scored one and set up another, the first time he had recorded multiple goal contributions in an MLS match for Toronto, the club said.

Benjamín Kuscevic nearly made it 3-1 in the 66th minute but poked Pereira's low cross onto the left post. Orlando made them pay. Interim head coach Martín Perelman sent on Daryl Dike in the 67th minute, and Orlando pinned Toronto back with a burst of set pieces in the 72nd through 74th minutes. In the 76th, Iago Teodoro headed a set piece across goal and Griezmann volleyed it home with his left foot. VAR confirmed the goal.

Toronto had a chance to answer straight away, but Crépeau held Kuscevic's header in the 81st minute. Two minutes later, Orlando led. Both clubs said Griezmann picked out Iván Angulo on the right, and Angulo found Dike, who curled a first-time shot into the top right corner. For about six minutes, it looked like the Lions had snatched all three points. Then Mihailovic's long-range blast in the 89th minute was parried by Crépeau, and Pereira reacted first to bury the rebound. Toronto said it was his first goal for the club.

The Stars of a Very Long Night

Antoine Griezmann scored his 10th MLS goal in 13 league appearances since joining Orlando, per the club, and made it nine straight MLS matches with a goal contribution. Orlando also counted 17 goal contributions in 17 appearances across all competitions since he arrived in July. MLS noted Orlando had not lost a game in any competition this season when he scored.

Martín Ojeda converted the penalty and became Orlando's all-time leading goalscorer.

Theo Corbeanu had a goal, an assist and two shots on target for Toronto.

Dániel Sallói assisted Corbeanu's goal for what Toronto called his team-leading 10th assist of the season.

Matheus Pereira gave away the penalty and then scored the equalizer. Talk about a full-circle evening.

Maxime Crépeau made four saves, but two of them produced rebounds that Toronto turned into goals, which is a rough way to spend a night.

Daryl Dike scored with his first shot on target off the bench, and the club said it was his 22nd goal for Orlando across all competitions.

The Turning Point

Kuscevic's shot off the post in the 66th minute flipped the entire night. A third Toronto goal there probably ends it. Instead, Orlando grabbed the momentum, peppered the box with set pieces and scored twice in seven minutes. Pereira's late rescue only happened because Toronto had let a lead slip in the first place.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Orlando 62.6 percent, Toronto 37.4.
  • Shots: Toronto 16, Orlando 14.
  • Shots on target: Toronto 7, Orlando 4. Orlando scored three goals on four shots on target.
  • Saves: Crépeau four, Luka Gavran one.
  • Passes: Orlando attempted 490 to Toronto's 281.

What It Means

Orlando moved to 11-5-13 with 38 points, and the club said the result kept it seventh in the Eastern Conference with five regular-season matches left. The Lions had beaten Toronto 3-0 in September and came in off a 3-2 win over the Columbus Crew. They host D.C. United on Saturday.

Toronto moved to 7-12-10 with 33 points after following up their 2-1 win over Montréal with a point. Richie Laryea made his 169th appearance for the club, moving into sixth on its all-time list, per Toronto. Next up is a trip to Red Bull New York on Saturday.

The Closing Take

Perelman summed up the mood perfectly: "It was a point. It's not what we wanted because we came here to win." Dike went further, saying "it's frustrating to lose two points in the manner that we did." This was a Marvel movie of a match: big names, constant twists, and a post-credits scene that changed everything. Orlando walked out of BMO Field with history, a point and a lot of regret.
