Neil Pierre called his shot before he ever left the house. "In the shower today, I was like, if I come on, I'm gonna score," the 18-year-old center back told the Union afterward. Ten minutes after coming off the bench, he met a Kai Wagner corner in the middle of the box and headed it into the top left corner. Manifestation is undefeated.

That goal sealed a 3-1 win for the Philadelphia Union over Red Bull New York on Wednesday night at Subaru Park. Milan Iloski and Indiana Vassilev also scored, Cade Cowell had the lone Red Bulls goal, and the Union finally gave their home crowd something to celebrate. According to the club, it was their first match in 59 days because of the World Cup break, the first in charge for interim head coach Ryan Richter, and their first three points in front of the home fans in 2026.

Iloski Strikes, Cowell Answers

The Union came out flying. Iloski dragged a shot wide in the second minute, and a minute later his pass sent Frankie Westfield clean through for a right-footed finish that slid just past the right post. In the ninth minute Iloski got it right, firing from the middle of the box into the bottom right corner. ESPN lists no assist, though the Union's account has a Wagner cross bobbled by Ethan Horvath starting it. The club also noted that Andre Blake sprinted the length of the field to join the celebration, which is exactly the energy a team without a home win needed.

The Red Bulls settled in and owned the ball, finishing with 63.3 percent of possession. Philadelphia kept getting the better looks anyway. Cavan Sullivan forced Horvath into a save from distance in the 22nd minute, Iloski tested him again in the 34th, and Bruno Damiani was denied from the middle of the box off a Westfield cross in the 37th.

Then the visitors punished all that waste. In the 38th minute, Emil Forsberg found Cowell on the right side of the box, and the winger beat Blake through the middle of the goal. The Red Bulls' recap also credits Ronald Donkor with a second assist, though ESPN lists only Forsberg. Horvath stopped Damiani again in the 44th minute, and it was 1-1 at halftime.

Eleven Minutes That Flipped Subaru Park

Michael Bradley sent on Omar Valencia for Matthew Dos Santos at the break, and the Red Bulls had their best stretch early in the second half. Jorge Ruvalcaba forced Blake into a save from distance in the 52nd minute, and two minutes later Blake stood tall against Julian Hall from the middle of the box.

Richter made his move in the 56th minute, bringing on Pierre for Japhet Sery Larsen. A minute later the Union were ahead. Westfield whipped in a cross and Vassilev swept a left-footed finish into the bottom left corner. Vassilev nearly added another off a corner two minutes later but put it over, and Iloski had two shots blocked in the 64th and 65th minutes. Then came Wagner's corner and Pierre's header in the 66th.

The rest was a victory lap. Quinn Sullivan came on for Vassilev in the 73rd minute, and the Union said he was returning after a 298-day recovery from an ACL tear. Bradley made a triple change a minute later, and Donkor, Valencia and Gustav Berggren all picked up yellow cards in the final 15 minutes. Pierre nearly grabbed a second in the 88th minute, hitting the bar from very close range after a corner, and Blake saved from Julián Bazán in the 90th before nine minutes of stoppage time ran out quietly.

The Men Who Won Rivalry Night

Neil Pierre was the story. The Union described him as a six-foot-seven Homegrown who was making only his second appearance for the club, his first since returning from a loan at Lyngby in Denmark, and his Subaru Park debut. He took three shots off the bench, scored his first MLS goal and hit the crossbar. "Honestly, I have no words. It was a dream, to be honest," he said.

Milan Iloski was relentless. Six shots, three on target, one goal and a hand in the chances for Westfield and Damiani. Horvath just could not keep him quiet all night.

Frankie Westfield set up the winner and had a pair of shots of his own, while Kai Wagner, who the club said re-signed after seven months with Birmingham City, marked his return to the XI with the assist on Pierre's header.

For the visitors, Ethan Horvath made six saves and kept the score respectable. Cade Cowell scored what the Red Bulls called his second goal of the season and the 12th of his MLS career, giving him four goal contributions in his last five appearances.

The Turning Point

The 54th to 57th minutes. Blake turned away Hall from the middle of the box, Richter introduced Pierre, and then Vassilev scored at the other end. In the space of three minutes the Red Bulls went from the team pressing for a lead to the team chasing a deficit, and they never found a way back.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Philadelphia 24, New York 9. On target, it was 9-4.
  • Possession: The Red Bulls had 63.3 percent and got almost nothing from it.
  • Saves: Horvath made six, Blake three.
  • Crosses: The Union completed 10 of 23 crosses. The Red Bulls completed 2 of 14.
  • Interceptions: Philadelphia picked off 17 passes to New York's eight.

What It Means

The Union move to 2-4-10 with 10 points. It was their first win since a 2-1 victory at CF Montréal on April 11, and they will try to keep the momentum going when Seattle visits on Saturday, July 25, as part of what the club called a six-game home stand.

Red Bull New York drop to 6-4-6 with 22 points. The loss ended a four-match unbeaten run the Red Bulls carried into the break, and Bradley made clear the response has to come fast. "The next time we play a game like this, we're not going to let frustration override anything," he said. "We're not gonna feel sorry for ourselves. We're gonna make sure that we're ready to respond in a strong way on Saturday night." That chance comes at home against Charlotte FC.

The Closing Take

Every superhero movie needs an origin scene, and Pierre wrote his own in the shower before the match even started. The Union have spent most of 2026 looking for a reason to believe. On Wednesday night, an 18-year-old who joined the club at 11 gave them one.
