Union Beat Sounders 1-0 as Milan Iloski Scores in Fifth Straight Match and Seattle Loses Fifth in a Row
Milan Iloski chipped the only goal in the 31st minute as the Philadelphia Union beat the Seattle Sounders 1-0, extending his scoring run to five matches and handing Seattle a fifth straight loss.

Andrew Thomas saw the danger and came charging off his line. Milan Iloski saw Andrew Thomas and simply lifted the ball over him. That 31st-minute moment of composure was all the Philadelphia Union needed on Saturday night at Subaru Park.
The Union beat the Seattle Sounders 1-0 in front of 18,520, and the goal carried weight on both sides. For Iloski, it extended his scoring streak to five consecutive matches, according to the Union. For Seattle, it was a fifth consecutive loss, which the Sounders noted ties a club record. The only other time the Rave Green dropped five in a row, per the club, was a stretch from July 11 to Aug. 9, 2015.
One Chip, Then a Long Wait
The first half had the feel of two teams feeling each other out. Kai Wagner tested the Seattle wall from distance in the sixth minute and had his shot blocked, and Paul Rothrock answered three minutes later with a header from a Kalani Kossa-Rienzi cross that sailed high and wide. Hassani Dotson picked up a yellow card for a handball in the 12th minute, and Osaze De Rosario saw a promising run into the box snuffed out by a sliding Nathan Harriel block in the 18th, according to both clubs.
Philadelphia came closer. Bruno Damiani glanced a header just wide from a Cavan Sullivan cross in the 22nd minute, and Sullivan had a shot from outside the box blocked in the 29th. Two minutes later, Frankie Westfield sent a through ball over the top from the right, Thomas came out to meet it, and Iloski got there first to loft his right-footed finish over the keeper and into the net.
The second half opened with the Union pushing for a cushion. Sullivan headed a Wagner corner just over the bar from close range in the 51st minute, and Iloski fired wide from distance a minute later after a fast break. Just past the hour, Iloski thought he had a second, but both clubs' recaps say it was ruled out for offside.
Brian Schmetzer had already reached for the bench by then, sending on Gallatin Sandnes, Jesús Ferreira and Peter Kingston around the hour. The changes gave Seattle a little life. Dotson met an Albert Rusnák cross in the 66th minute and forced Andre Blake into a save, Rothrock headed a Ferreira cross wide in the 69th, and Kingston blasted over from outside the box in the 75th. Rusnák skied another look in the 84th.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, kept generating chances on the break. Thomas denied substitute Quinn Sullivan in the 76th minute and Iloski a minute later, then stopped Cavan Sullivan in the 89th and Quinn Sullivan again from a tight angle in stoppage time. The Union never doubled the lead, but they never really needed to.
The Faces of the Night
Iloski is in the kind of form that makes a striker look calm in chaos. He took three shots, put two on target, scored once and had another finish wiped out for offside. By ESPN's match data, the run includes goals against Orlando, Columbus and Inter Miami in May and against Red Bull New York on Wednesday.
Westfield delivered the through ball that ESPN credits as the assist, and it was a beauty. The Union's recap also credited Neil Pierre, making his first MLS start, with his first MLS assist on the buildup. The club noted the 18-year-old Homegrown had scored in his Subaru Park debut on Wednesday, which makes it quite a week for him.
Cavan Sullivan, whom the Union described as 16 years old, led all players with five shots, though only one hit the target. Off the bench, Quinn Sullivan added three shots and put two on target.
Thomas was the reason this stayed close, finishing with four saves. At the other end, Blake needed just one save for the clean sheet.
Where the Match Was Decided
The real swing came in the 66th minute, not the 31st. Seattle had just made three changes and were finally getting bodies into the box when Dotson rose to meet Rusnák's cross. Blake stopped it, and that turned out to be the Sounders' only shot on target all night. Had that header gone in, a road team on a losing streak would have had something to cling to. Instead, the Union's young back line simply kept closing doors.
Stats That Matter
- Shots on target: 5 to 1 in Philadelphia's favor, and 15 total shots to Seattle's seven.
- Possession: 55.9 percent for Seattle, with 454 passes to Philadelphia's 347. Plenty of ball, very little bite.
- Interceptions: 16 to six for the Union, a sign of how often Philadelphia read Seattle's passing lanes.
- Corners: 6 to 1 for the hosts.
- Saves: four for Thomas, one for Blake.
The Bigger Picture
Philadelphia moved to 3-4-10 with 13 points and has now won back-to-back matches, both under interim head coach Ryan Richter. The Union said this was his second match at the helm. There is still a lot of ground to make up, but the club's six-game homestand continues on Saturday, Aug. 1, against Atlanta United FC.
Seattle dropped to 7-3-6 with 24 points, and the Sounders listed themselves eighth in the Western Conference at the time of writing. The skid now covers home losses to the LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers and road defeats at LAFC, Austin FC and here. The Sounders also noted this was their first match against an Eastern Conference opponent this year. Their three-match road stretch ends at Portland on Saturday, Aug. 1, the same Timbers side that beat them 5-1 in Seattle on July 16.
Last Word
Seattle's summer is turning into the soccer version of Sleepless in Seattle without the happy ending at the top of the Empire State Building. Philadelphia, by contrast, has a teenage core, a striker who cannot stop scoring and a new voice on the touchline. Five straight for Iloski, five straight the wrong way for the Sounders. The math was simple, and so was the chip.
