Real Salt Lake showed up at BC Place with a lineup young enough to need a permission slip and a game plan bold enough to bother the defending Western Conference champions. For almost an hour it worked. Then Aziel Jackson found the bottom corner, Yohei Takaoka slammed the door late, and the Vancouver Whitecaps opened their season with a 1-0 win on Saturday.

Jackson's 57th-minute strike was the only goal in front of 23,546 fans. Vancouver had 58.7 percent of the ball and outshot RSL 13-10, but the visitors, starting five Academy homegrown products per their club, had a goal ruled out for offside and a late look at an equalizer before the Whitecaps sealed it.

RSL Come Out Swinging

The kids did not look nervous. Aiden Hezarkhani fired a free kick high and wide in the first minute, RSL won three corners in the opening six minutes, and Noel Caliskan had two long-range efforts blocked in quick succession. RSL's own report said the visitors controlled the early tempo, and for once a club's view of its own performance matched the evidence.

Vancouver's answer came from set pieces and from the right side. Emmanuel Sabbi had a shot blocked in the 10th minute, and Brian White headed a Sebastian Berhalter cross high and wide after a corner in the 11th. Then the game exploded in the space of three minutes. Takaoka saved an Ariath Piol header in the 15th, Thomas Müller crashed a long-range shot off the right post in the 16th, White blazed over in the same minute, and Piol missed narrowly from a tight angle on the left in the 17th.

The Goal That Wasn't, and the One That Was

The best moment of RSL's half arrived before the break. RSL's report described a sweeping move in which 17-year-old Luca Moisa switched play to Alexandros Katranis, whose delivery found Piol for a finish. Both clubs said the flag went up for offside. RSL called it dubious; it counted for nothing either way.

Vancouver ended the half pressing. Rafael Cabral, RSL's captain, saved from Sabbi in the 29th and from Jackson in the 42nd, and Berhalter headed just over from a Müller cross in the 33rd. Zavier Gozo was booked in the 33rd.

After halftime, Mathías Laborda went close for Vancouver in the 49th, Sabbi was booked in the 50th, and Gozo sent a shot from distance just wide for RSL in the 53rd. Then came the breakthrough. In the 57th minute, both clubs described a Tate Johnson ball into the box that took a deflection on its way to Jackson. ESPN credits no assist. Jackson finished first time with his left foot from the center of the box into the bottom right corner. 1-0.

The Whitecaps called him a new signing and said the goal, scored on his home debut, was the club's first of the 2026 season.

The Turning Point: Takaoka's Smother

RSL's coach Pablo Mastroeni threw on Sergi Solans, Dominik Marczuk and Pablo Ruiz to chase the game. Cabral kept his side alive by saving Sabbi's shot from the right side of the six-yard box in the 64th, and Tristan Blackmon had a header blocked a minute later. Samuel Junqua, Katranis and Andrés Cubas were all booked between the 75th and 82nd minutes, and RSL lost DeAndre Yedlin to an injury in the 85th, Philip Quinton replacing him.

The moment that decided the night came in the 88th. Solans set up Gozo on the right side of the box, and the Whitecaps' report said he was through on goal. Takaoka held his position and swallowed the shot. Two minutes later Solans headed a Ruiz cross wide, and Cabral saved from White in the third of seven added minutes. Vancouver held on.

Star Watch

Aziel Jackson put both of his shots on target and scored the winner before Kenji Cabrera replaced him in the 68th.

Yohei Takaoka made two saves for the clean sheet, and the second was the one that mattered. The Whitecaps said he led MLS with 13 clean sheets in 2025 and earned a club-record 16 across all competitions.

Emmanuel Sabbi was one of Vancouver's most active attackers with three shots, two on target, until Édier Ocampo replaced him in the 68th.

Rafael Cabral made four saves and kept RSL within one. Zavier Gozo, the 18-year-old wide player RSL calls one of its brightest young talents, had RSL's best two chances after halftime.

RSL said Moisa and Zach Booth made their RSL and MLS debuts, Hezarkhani earned his first RSL start, and Solans became the club's 230th all-time debutant.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Vancouver 58.7 percent, Real Salt Lake 41.3 percent.
  • Shots: Vancouver 13 with 5 on target; Real Salt Lake 10 with 2 on target.
  • Saves: Cabral 4, Takaoka 2.
  • Passing: Vancouver completed 468 of 528 passes; Real Salt Lake completed 300 of 371.
  • Tackles won: Vancouver 19, Real Salt Lake 10.

What It Means

Vancouver opens at 1-0-0 with 3 points. The Whitecaps noted they were unbeaten in MLS play in 2025 when scoring first, at 17W-0L-4D including the playoffs, and that habit carried straight into 2026. Vancouver hosts C.S. Cartaginés in the Concacaf Champions Cup on Wednesday, then welcomes Toronto FC on Feb. 28.

Real Salt Lake starts at 0-0-1 with 0 points. RSL said it has now dropped each of its last three road openers, after losses at San Jose last year and at Miami in 2024. Its home opener comes against the Seattle Sounders at America First Field on Feb. 28. Given the youth on the field, RSL can take more from this one than the scoreline suggests.

Closing Take

This felt like a coming-of-age movie where the scrappy kids give the reigning West champs a scare in the first act. Vancouver, though, did not need a training montage. It needed one clean finish from Jackson and one big save from Takaoka, and it got both.
