Velde Orchestrates 3-1 Timbers Win Over San Diego for Cifuentes First MLS Victory
Kristoffer Velde scored and assisted twice as Marti Cifuentes earned his first MLS win over San Diego.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Kristoffer Velde did almost everything except take attendance. A 30-yard opener. Two assists. A hand in all three Portland goals. And when the final whistle hit at Providence Park on Aug. 19, the Timbers had a 3-1 win over San Diego FC, a series sweep of the expansion side, and Marti Cifuentes' first MLS victory as head coach.
Ariel Lassiter and David Da Costa finished the other two. Gabriel Pirani briefly leveled for San Diego in first-half stoppage time. Attendance was 20,617. Portland climbed to 8-9-3 and 27 points, ninth in the West and above the playoff line.

The Golazos
Cole Bassett found Velde in the middle of San Diego's half in the 29th minute. Velde struck from nearly 30 yards into the lower left. Providence Park has seen Velde specials before. This one set the tone for a night of transition finishing against a possession-heavy visitor.
San Diego answered in the 45+1st. Pirani turned twice atop the box, combined with Lewis Morgan, and finished bottom-left. Halftime: 1-1, and the visitors had the territorial edge -- they would finish with 65 percent possession and 21 shots to Portland's 11.
Then Portland reminded everyone that shot volume is not the same as shot quality. In the 51st, Velde held up play, found Jimer Fory on the left wing, and Fory's first-touch cross met Lassiter for a roofed finish. 2-1. In the 68th, Velde drove the left wing into the box and dropped it for Da Costa, whose curler found the upper right. 3-1. James Pantemis made five saves. The night was sealed.

What It Means
Velde's line -- one goal, two assists -- pushed him to 13 goal contributions (5G, 8A), tied with Kevin Kelsy for the team lead. Three of Velde's MLS goals have come against San Diego including postseason. Lassiter notched a third straight match with a contribution. Da Costa's goal was his first since April 4. Bassett and Fory each logged their fifth assist of 2026.
Cifuentes' first league win matters for the locker room even if the calendar says August. Portland has scored in every match since returning from the summer window and multiple goals in seven of those. Sweeping San Diego in 2026 is a tidy series footnote. Climbing above the playoff line is the practical one.
San Diego's unbeaten streak ended. Twenty-one shots and six on target were not enough when Velde and company finished the transitions. That is the expansion tax in Providence Park: you can dominate the ball and still leave with nothing.

The Close
Some wins are about control. This one was about ruthlessness. San Diego had the ball. Portland had the goals -- Velde from distance, Lassiter at the far post, Da Costa from the edge. Cifuentes has his first MLS W. The Timbers have three points and a reminder that September playoff math starts with August nights like this.
The film will show the moments that decided it and the ones that almost did. That is how these nights work -- one bounce, one set piece, one finish from distance, and the narrative locks in before the Monday meeting starts. Fans leave loud or quiet. Coaches leave with clips. Players leave with the knowledge that September does not forgive unfinished chances.
Possession was San Diego's. The scoreboard was Portland's. That sentence is the entire tactical postmortem. Twenty-one shots for the visitors. Three goals for the home side, all built on transitions and quality from Velde's feet. Expansion clubs learn this lesson the hard way at Providence Park: you can own the ball and still leave owned by the counter.
Cifuentes' first league win will sit in the coaching timeline next to the Leagues Cup debut victory over Tijuana. Different competitions, same building, same need for results. Sweeping San Diego in 2026 is a series you want on the resume when the Supporters' Shield math and the playoff seeding arguments start in October.
Lassiter's roofed finish and Da Costa's curler will fill the highlight packages. Velde's 30-yard opener will fill the social clips. Pantemis' five saves will fill the quiet appreciation from the coaching staff. Together they form a complete home win against a side that arrived unbeaten in three and left with a streak snapped.
Portland's next stretch includes road tests that will not gift three points this cleanly. Nights when you score three and climb above the line are the nights you bank. Aug. 19 was one of those banks.
