Three days after losing the top spot in the West, the Vancouver Whitecaps took it back the loud way. Brian White scored twice, Édier Ocampo had a goal and an assist, and the 'Caps buried FC Dallas 5-0 at BC Place on Saturday night in front of 25,398 fans.

It was 4-0 at halftime, and the second half was mostly a formality. Emmanuel Sabbi opened the scoring in the 11th minute, White struck in the 23rd and 37th, Ocampo headed in a fourth deep in first-half stoppage time, and substitute Bruno Caicedo finished the job in the 68th. Vancouver's site said the win moved the club back into first place in the Western Conference, three days after a 1-0 home loss to Houston had knocked it off the perch. As responses go, this one was emphatic.

Corners, Chaos and a Quick Lead

Vancouver came out swinging. Shaq Moore was booked in the seventh minute, and three minutes later the 'Caps won a corner that set up the opener. In the 11th minute, Sabbi pounced after Dallas failed to deal with the set piece and drove a right-footed shot from the right side of the box into the bottom left corner.

Jonathan Sirois kept the visitors in it for a few minutes, stopping Ocampo in the 15th minute and Sabbi in the 17th. He could not stop the second goal. Per the Whitecaps, Tristan Blackmon's long ball found Ocampo out wide, one touch got the wingback in behind, and his pass across the face of goal left White a simple finish from very close range. ESPN credits Ocampo with the assist; the club also listed Blackmon.

White nearly had a second in the 28th minute, only to have his shot blocked, and he headed over in the 32nd. In the 37th, Dallas again failed to clear a corner and White hammered a left-footed finish from the center of the box into the top left corner. MLSsoccer.com described it as a powerful first-time strike.

Dallas Hits the Post, Vancouver Hits Again

Dallas had one real look before the break. In the 41st minute, Christian Cappis found Logan Farrington, whose right-footed shot from the center of the box came back off the left post. That was as close as the visitors came all night.

The fourth official signaled six minutes of added time, and the 'Caps used nearly all of them. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Andrés Cubas picked out Ocampo arriving at the far post, and the wingback looped a header over Sirois from a tight angle on the right. Vancouver also credited Tate Johnson on the play; ESPN lists Cubas alone.

Dallas made four changes at halftime, sending on Petar Musa, Santiago Moreno, Bernard Kamungo and Joaquín Valiente. It changed the personnel, not the plot. Ryan Gauld dragged a shot just wide in the 51st minute, Ocampo tried an ambitious bicycle kick from the edge of the box that went over, per the club, and Sirois denied Gauld and Caicedo in back-to-back minutes in the 64th and 65th.

Caicedo got his reward in the 68th minute, finishing a one-two with Thomas Müller with a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. He nearly added another in the 71st, and Ocampo pulled a shot just wide in the 79th. Dallas had a penalty shout checked by VAR in the 90th minute, but no penalty was given, and Yohei Takaoka made his only save of the night on a Musa shot from distance in stoppage time.

The Stars

White was back to his best. MLSsoccer.com called him the club's all-time leading goalscorer and said he was returning from a brief hamstring injury. The brace was his first scoring since the World Cup break, per the same report, and both of his shots on target went in. "I just was able to find a bit of space, and the ball came to me and was able to finish it off," White said.

Ocampo was the club's Man of the Match, and it was not close. He took four shots, scored once and set up White's opener, and Vancouver said he now leads the team with eight assists across all competitions.

Takaoka's clean sheet carried some history. The Whitecaps said it was his 45th for the club, tying David Ousted for the most in the MLS era.

Coach Jesper Sørensen had fun with the White question afterward. "He can also do it because he's chosen, right?" he joked.

The Turning Point

Sabbi's 11th-minute opener. Dallas arrived on a two-game winning streak and needed a calm start. Instead, it conceded off a poorly cleared set piece and spent the rest of the half chasing. Vancouver said the club remains unbeaten in MLS play under Sørensen when scoring first, at 28 wins and four draws, so the early goal was a bigger blow than it looked.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on target: Vancouver 10, Dallas 1.
  • Total shots: Vancouver 17, Dallas 5.
  • Possession: Vancouver held 64 percent of the ball and completed 572 passes to Dallas' 280.
  • Saves: Sirois made five, Takaoka one.
  • Corners: Vancouver won nine to Dallas' three, and two of them led directly to goals.

What It Means

Vancouver improved to 12-4-4 with 40 points. MLSsoccer.com said the win pushed the 'Caps past Houston into first in the West and past Inter Miami into second in the Supporters' Shield race, and the club said its goal difference of plus-27 leads the league. The Whitecaps have now beaten Dallas twice this season, after a 3-2 win at Dallas in May. Next up is a trip to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday.

White wasn't interested in scoreboard watching. "We can't be too concerned with what other teams are doing in the table," he said.

Dallas fell to 9-6-6 with 33 points, and the two-game winning streak is over. The club's long road swing wraps up at St. Louis CITY SC next Sunday before Dallas finally returns home to face Sporting Kansas City on Sept. 5, its first match at Toyota Stadium since May.

Closing Take

Sørensen summed it up neatly: "It's not been easy for us scoring, but today we hit a couple, and that was great." A couple is generous. This was Vancouver flipping the "hard launch" switch on its title credentials, five goals deep, with a clean sheet as the caption.
