Brian White spent most of Saturday afternoon at BC Place locked in a personal duel with Matt Freese, and for a long time the New York City FC goalkeeper was winning it. Shot after shot, header after header, Freese kept saying no. Then, with four minutes left, White finally got his answer in.

White's diving header sealed a 2-0 win for the Vancouver Whitecaps over New York City FC in front of 25,460, after Mathías Laborda had opened the scoring right before halftime. Vancouver is now 6-0-1, which both the club and MLS called the best start in the Whitecaps' MLS history, and the club said the result lifted the 'Caps into first place in the Western Conference and the Supporters' Shield race.

White vs. Freese, Round After Round

It took less than a minute for the pattern to appear. Jeevan Badwal crossed, White rose, and the header drifted wide. White headed another chance wide off a Sebastian Berhalter corner in the 14th minute, then had two efforts blocked in quick succession around the 20th. According to the club, one of those came after a cheeky Badwal backheel sent him through, only for a last-ditch block to save New York.

Freese got busy from there. He saved White's header from a Berhalter cross in the 31st minute, a White shot from the middle of the box in the 35th and another White header in the 40th. Vancouver won six corners in the first half alone, and NYCFC's back line spent the period in full emergency mode.

The breakthrough came from a dead ball. In the 44th minute, Berhalter whipped a free kick into the box and Laborda finished from very close range. The AP described a leaping volley, and the club went with karate kick, which is more fun. Either way, Vancouver led 1-0 at the break, and there was no added time to give NYCFC a reply.

New York Pushes, Freese Keeps Saving

The second half opened with Freese stopping Thomas Müller from outside the box and then Berhalter and White in the 49th minute. New York did find a spell of pressure around the hour. Nicolás Fernández sent a free kick just over in the 54th minute, and Raul Gustavo, Aiden O'Neill and Hannes Wolf all had shots blocked between the 55th and 60th minutes.

Vancouver head coach Jesper Sørensen responded with a double change in the 63rd minute, sending on Bruno Caicedo and Emmanuel Sabbi. Caicedo headed one wide off a corner four minutes later. Then White went back to work. Freese saved his left-footed effort from outside the box in the 79th minute and another shot two minutes later, and White pulled a left-footed chance wide off a Sabbi cutback in the 82nd.

The Turning Point: Caicedo Finds the Back Post

In the 86th minute, Caicedo made the substitution pay off. According to the club, he beat his marker, cut inside and chipped a cross toward the back post, and White threw himself at it to head home from very close range. Two-nil, game over. MLS said White honored former Red Bulls teammate Bradley Wright-Phillips with his celebration.

White explained the mindset afterward. "I've pushed myself to be more selfish," he told MLS. "I just kept trying to score, my teammates giving me good passes, just kept trying and trying, and then finally, it fell in."

Sørensen was quick to credit the other goalkeeper too. "I also have to say that Freese had a very good game and he had some very good saves," he said.

Star Watch

White's line was absurd: 12 shots, seven on target, one goal. MLS said it was his team-leading sixth goal of the season, leaving him one behind the Golden Boot co-leaders, and MLS added that it was the 700th goal in the club's MLS history. Sørensen liked that White never let the misses get to him: "it's nice to see that he is not bothered by a miss, even though, of course, everybody is."

Berhalter's assist was his fifth of the season, and the AP said his nine goal contributions lead the team. Badwal was named the club's Man of the Match, and Caicedo's assist was his first goal contribution for the Whitecaps, per the club. Yohei Takaoka made two saves for his fourth shutout of the season.

Freese was the reason this was not a rout. He made eight saves and kept New York in it until the 86th minute. Fernández, O'Neill and Wolf each had two shots for the visitors.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Vancouver 23, New York City FC 10.
  • Shots on target: Vancouver 10, NYCFC 2.
  • Saves: Freese 8, Takaoka 2.
  • Possession: NYCFC 58.4 percent, Vancouver 41.6 percent.
  • Corners: Vancouver 12, NYCFC 5.

What It Means

Vancouver is 6-0-1 with 18 points and, according to the club, leads MLS with a plus-15 goal difference while sitting on 19 goals. The 'Caps have won two straight since their only loss, to San Jose, and Andrés Cubas returned to the lineup after an adductor strain, per the club, which noted Vancouver has yet to concede with him on the field this season. Sporting Kansas City visits BC Place on Friday.

NYCFC drops to 3-2-2 with 11 points and is winless in three after a 3-2 home loss to Inter Miami and a 1-1 draw with St. Louis. The AP noted New York entered the night tied for second in MLS in goals with 14, so being held to two shots on target will sting. Charlotte FC visits next on April 18. The AP also pointed out it was the first meeting between these clubs since a 1-1 tie on Sept. 2, 2023.

Closing Take

Every great striker has a nemesis night, the one where the goalkeeper seems to have read the script in advance. Freese was White's on Saturday, right up until the final scene. The Whitecaps showed they can win without the ball, from set pieces and from crosses. A team that leads the league and still has its best scorer feeling selfish is a scary thought for everybody else in the West.
