Whitecaps Beat San Diego 4-2 as Brian White Becomes Third American With Four Straight 10-Goal MLS Seasons
Brian White scored twice and set up two more as Vancouver beat San Diego FC 4-2, becoming the third American in MLS history with at least 10 goals in four straight seasons.

Brian White had gone four games without scoring. By halftime at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night, that drought was a distant memory, and by full time he had his name next to a couple of MLS legends.
White scored twice and set up two more as the Vancouver Whitecaps beat San Diego FC 4-2, and the league said the brace made him the third American player in MLS history to score at least 10 goals in four straight seasons. The other two are Chris Wondolowski (2010-19) and Roy Lassiter (1996-99). Not a bad way to head into the break.
White Opens the Floodgates
This was a rematch of last season's Western Conference Final, as the Whitecaps' own recap pointed out, and for half an hour it played like a tense one. Aziel Jackson tested CJ dos Santos from distance in the seventh minute, while San Diego's David Vazquez and Pedro Soma both missed the target early. White headed a set-piece delivery just wide in the 24th.
The breakthrough arrived in the 30th minute. According to the club, Tristan Blackmon lofted a ball down the right for captain Thomas Müller, whose low cross found a sliding White for a left-footed finish from point-blank range. 1-0.
Dos Santos kept San Diego in it for a while, denying Müller twice before the break. But on the stroke of halftime the 'Caps broke again, and the club described a slick four-way passing move that ended with Jeevan Badwal setting up White. White finished left-footed from the middle of the box into the bottom left corner. 2-0 at the half.
San Diego Punch Back, Vancouver Punch Harder
San Diego sent Luca Bombino on at halftime and got the reaction they needed eight minutes into the second half. Vazquez, set up by Anders Dreyer, hit a left-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner, a strike the Whitecaps measured at 20 yards. 2-1, and Snapdragon finally had something to cheer.
It lasted 14 minutes. Jesper Sørensen sent on Bruno Caicedo for Jackson in the 63rd minute, and four minutes later Caicedo arrived at the back post to finish a move that, per the club, started with Müller and ran through White. ESPN credits White with the assist. 3-1.
Then San Diego's night fell apart. Bombino, already booked in the 54th minute, picked up a second yellow in the 72nd and was sent off. Three minutes later, from a Vancouver corner, White's header was blocked and bounced near the goal line, and substitute Ralph Priso, on the field for barely two minutes, poked it in from close range. 4-1.
Bryan Zamblé pulled one back for the hosts in the first minute of stoppage time, again assisted by Dreyer, but it was cosmetic.
Star Power: White, Müller and the Bench
White's final line: two goals, two assists, five shots and three on target before he came off in the 84th minute. The Whitecaps said the goals were his team-leading ninth and 10th of the MLS season, and the MLS story noted the performance snapped a four-game scoreless streak. The league framed it as a statement performance, and it is hard to disagree.
Müller pulled the strings, as usual. ESPN credits him with one assist, on White's opener, while the Whitecaps' count, which includes secondary assists, has him at three. Whatever the bookkeeping, he also put two of his four shots on target and had a hand in several of Vancouver's best moves.
The substitutes did real damage. Caicedo scored his second goal of the season, per the club, and Priso's goal was his first of the season after he returned from two months out with a hamstring injury, as the Whitecaps described it. Isaac Boehmer, making his first MLS start since Oct. 19, 2024 with Yohei Takaoka suspended, needed to make only one save. Jeevan Badwal, whose pass set up White's second goal, recorded his first assist of the season according to the club, and also collected a 63rd-minute yellow card before making way in the 84th.
For San Diego, Dreyer had both assists and dos Santos made seven saves, which says plenty about how lopsided the shot chart became.
The Turning Point
Bombino's red card in the 72nd minute ended any comeback hopes, but the real hinge was the 67th-minute goal. San Diego had just cut it to 2-1 and had some momentum. Caicedo's finish four minutes after he came on restored the two-goal margin and drained the momentum. Once the hosts went down to 10 men, Vancouver were cruising.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Vancouver 21, San Diego 11.
- Shots on target: Vancouver 12, San Diego 3.
- Saves: dos Santos 7, Boehmer 1.
- Possession: San Diego 52.7 percent, which bought them very little.
- Cards: San Diego's Bombino was sent off for two bookings, 18 minutes apart.
What It Means
Vancouver move to 10-2-2 with 32 points, a club-best start according to the Whitecaps, and the club said they enter the World Cup break first in the Western Conference and one point behind Supporters' Shield leaders Nashville SC. The club also noted Vancouver remain unbeaten in MLS play when scoring first under Sørensen. They return to league play on July 16 at Chicago Fire FC, with a Canadian Championship quarterfinal against Cavalry FC coming before that.
San Diego drop to 4-5-6 with 17 points and have one win in their last eight league matches. Dreyer's creativity is still there, and Vazquez's strike was a reminder of what they can do, but losing at home by two with a man sent off is a rough way to start a long break.
Closing Take
White's night felt like a veteran band dropping a surprise album right before going on hiatus: no lead single, just hits. Four straight seasons of double-digit goals put him in a club of three, and the Whitecaps head into the summer looking down at the rest of the West.
