Thomas Müller Seals Cascadia Cup for Whitecaps as Sounders Drop Seventh Straight in 2-0 Loss
Rayan Elloumi and Thomas Müller scored late as the Vancouver Whitecaps won 2-0 at Seattle to clinch the Cascadia Cup and hand the Sounders a seventh straight MLS loss.

Thomas Müller has spent a career ruining rivals' weekends, and on Sunday night he added the Pacific Northwest to the list. The German star bent an indirect free kick around a wall of Seattle bodies, off the inside of the far post and into the net, and the Vancouver Whitecaps had their trophy.
Vancouver beat the Seattle Sounders 2-0 at Lumen Field, with Rayan Elloumi breaking the deadlock in the 77th minute and Müller adding the second five minutes later. The win clinched the 2026 Cascadia Cup for the 'Caps, who said it was a record ninth title, and it handed Seattle a seventh straight MLS defeat, the longest losing run in the club's MLS history, per both clubs.
Plenty of Ball, No Breakthrough
For 76 minutes this was a siege without a payoff. Vancouver had the ball and the corners, and Seattle had a whole lot of bodies behind it. The 'Caps lost a starter early when Jeevan Badwal came off in the 18th minute after what Vancouver described as a heavy collision with Nouhou Tolo, with the club saying the change was made under the concussion protocol. Elloumi, an academy product, came on in his place. File that away.
Seattle's own injury list grew in the 36th minute when Jesús Ferreira went down with what the Sounders called a leg injury and was replaced by Sebastian Gomez. The hosts' best first-half look came from Snyder Brunell, whose shot from the middle of the box in the 31st minute ended up in the side netting.
Vancouver should have led by the break. In the 28th minute, Oliver Larraz's crosses produced back-to-back blocked headers from Mathías Laborda and Ralph Priso. In the 40th minute, Müller met another Larraz delivery and seemed to have scored until Paul Rothrock cleared off the line, an effort Vancouver's report credited to his hip. Larraz then curled a shot from distance just over the bar in the 43rd minute. Halftime arrived scoreless, which felt like a clerical error.
The Sub Strikes
The second half followed the same script. Andy Thomas saved from Müller in the 52nd minute and from Édier Ocampo in the 62nd. Seattle's best second-half chance came in the 54th minute, when Rothrock broke and set up Albert Rusnák, whose left-footed shot from the middle of the box went wide right. The yellow cards piled up for the hosts too, with Jackson Ragen booked in the 57th minute, Tolo in the 76th and Rothrock in the 86th.
Then Emmanuel Sabbi finally cracked the code. Seattle's recap had him driving down the left and cutting inside before he slipped a through ball to Elloumi, who beat Thomas with a right-footed finish into the top right corner in the 77th minute. Vancouver said it was Elloumi's first MLS goal of the season. Not bad for a guy who was on the bench when the game kicked off.
Five minutes later, Vancouver got what Seattle's recap called a rare indirect free kick inside the box. Larraz tapped it to Müller, and Müller whipped a right-footed shot around the wall and in off the far post. Ball game, rivalry, trophy.
The Men Who Mattered
Thomas Müller took five shots and put four on target, four more than the entire Seattle team. MLSsoccer.com noted it was his first career goal against the Sounders, and Vancouver named him its man of the match. The club counted the strike as his seventh goal of the season across all competitions.
Rayan Elloumi came on in the 18th minute and finished with four shots and the winner. The Whitecaps said it was his second goal of the season across all competitions.
Oliver Larraz was everywhere. He took three shots, assisted Müller's goal and delivered the corners that kept Seattle pinned. Vancouver logged 50 first-half touches for him.
Andy Thomas made four saves to keep the Sounders in it for as long as possible. He deserved better company.
The Turning Point
Rothrock's clearance off the line in the 40th minute kept Seattle alive, but Badwal's early exit is what changed the night. Jesper Sørensen did not plan on using Elloumi in the 18th minute, and that forced change ended up delivering the goal that broke a stubborn match open. Sometimes the best substitution is the one you never wanted to make.
Stats That Matter
- Shots on goal: Vancouver 6, Seattle 0. Yohei Takaoka did not have to make a single save.
- Total shots: Vancouver 19, Seattle 5.
- Corners: Vancouver won eight, Seattle one.
- Possession: Vancouver held 57 percent of the ball.
- Clearances: Seattle made 30 to Vancouver's 17, which tells you where the game was played.
What It Means
Vancouver moved to 11-4-3 (wins, draws, losses) with 37 points, and Vancouver's site and MLSsoccer.com both said the result put the 'Caps back on top of the Western Conference. It also snapped a three-match MLS winless run, after a loss at Cincinnati and draws with Minnesota and LAFC. Takaoka's shutout was his seventh MLS clean sheet of the season, per Vancouver. Next up is a midweek home date with Houston, which Vancouver billed as first against second.
Seattle fell to 7-3-8 with 24 points. The Sounders' last league win came on May 13, and their recap listed them 11th in the West at the time of writing. The cruel twist: Seattle beat Vancouver 5-1 on aggregate in a two-leg Concacaf Champions Cup series earlier this year, according to the Sounders. That feels like a long time ago now. Brian Schmetzer's side has no time to sulk, with Austin FC visiting on Wednesday.
The Closing Take
Seattle spent Sunday night looking for a shot on target, and Vancouver spent it looking for a trophy. Only one of them found what it wanted. Müller, who per MLSsoccer.com tallied 24 goal contributions in 45 editions of Der Klassiker with Bayern Munich, has now added Cascadia to his rivalry résumé. Seattle, meanwhile, is living its own Groundhog Day, waking up to the same result every week.
