Thomas Müller Scores as Whitecaps Rout Sporting KC 3-0 to Extend Best Start in Club History
Emmanuel Sabbi, Bruno Caicedo and Thomas Müller scored in the first 28 minutes as the Vancouver Whitecaps beat Sporting Kansas City 3-0 at BC Place.

Some games take 90 minutes to decide. This one took 28. By the time Thomas Müller headed home Vancouver's third goal on Friday night at BC Place, Sporting Kansas City were already doing the math on how to lose respectably.
The Vancouver Whitecaps beat Sporting KC 3-0 in front of 21,777, with Emmanuel Sabbi, Bruno Caicedo and Müller all scoring inside the first half hour. According to the AP, the win extended the best start to a season in club history, and the Whitecaps said they became just the second team in MLS history to score at least 22 goals in their first eight games, joining the 1998 LA Galaxy. Vancouver outshot Kansas City 25-3. Not a typo.
Twenty-Eight Minutes of Pure Chaos
Vancouver were buzzing from the opening whistle. Sabbi glanced a header just wide in the second minute off an Édier Ocampo cross, and Müller fired over off a corner a couple of minutes later. Kansas City spent the early going chasing shadows.
The first goal arrived in the 13th minute on a break. Müller slipped Brian White in behind, White's attempt went wide of the target, and in the scramble that followed Sabbi arrived to sweep a right-footed shot into the top left corner. Sabbi nearly doubled his tally three minutes later, but John Pulskamp saved his shot from the middle of the box.
In the 23rd minute, Caicedo made it 2-0. The 21-year-old, making his first career start, per the AP, pounced on a sloppy Kansas City pass, carried it into the left side of the area and beat Pulskamp low to the bottom right corner, in off the far post. The AP noted it was his first goal in MLS, and the Whitecaps called it his first goal for the club.
Five minutes later, Sabbi turned provider. He chased down a ball that was about to roll out, kept it in play and delivered a cross onto Müller's head, and the captain powered it through the center of the goal. Three goals in 28 minutes. The rest was paperwork.
The Turning Point: The 13th-Minute Break
Every rout has a first domino, and this one fell early. Vancouver's opener came from a fast break, and it exposed exactly what Raphael Wicky spent the postgame lamenting: a young Kansas City side giving away goals in important moments. Wicky insisted there were first-half spells when his side was in the game. The scoreboard kept disagreeing.
"Of course the first half didn't go the way I wanted," Wicky said afterward, per Sporting KC. He did not sugarcoat what came next: "it's tough for them that in 30 minutes you concede three goals. That's always very tough mentally."
Vancouver could have had more before the break. White headed over from close range in the 37th minute, Caicedo fired wide off a corner in the 45th, and Sebastian Berhalter thumped a header off the crossbar in first-half stoppage time.
A Quieter Second Half
The second half settled into something closer to a training exercise. Kansas City made two changes in the 51st minute, sending on Lasse Berg Johnsen and Ian James, and had a few spells of possession. The visitors finished level with Vancouver at 50 percent of the ball, but none of it turned into a shot on target.
Müller nearly had a second with a header in the 73rd minute that Pulskamp held, and substitute Rayan Elloumi forced another save in stoppage time. The lone sour note for Vancouver came in the 81st minute, when Sabbi went off injured and was replaced by Cheikh Sabaly. Nikola Djordjevic came on a minute later and, according to the Whitecaps, made his Whitecaps FC debut after signing from WFC2 in December.
Star Watch
Sabbi was the Whitecaps' man of the match, and it was easy to see why. He had a goal, an assist and six shots, more than anyone on the field, before his early exit.
Müller scored on one of his two shots on target and pulled the strings throughout, sending White through for the sequence that produced the opener. Caicedo's goal came on one of five attempts, a busy and fearless first start.
Yohei Takaoka barely needed his gloves. Kansas City did not put a single shot on target, and according to the AP it was his fifth shutout of the season. The Whitecaps added that they have yet to concede with Andrés Cubas on the field this season, a stretch they put at 611 minutes across all competitions.
For Kansas City, Pulskamp made four saves and kept the score from getting truly ugly.

What It Means
Vancouver move to 7-0-1 with 21 points and have won three straight. Per the AP, the Whitecaps lead MLS in points, goals with 22, and goal differential at plus-18, and the club said they sit first in the Supporters' Shield standings. Jesper Sørensen's side hosts the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, April 25.
Kansas City fall to 1-1-6 with 4 points, and the AP noted that both their points total and their minus-13 goal differential rank last in the Western Conference. This was a fourth straight league loss, following defeats to Colorado, Real Salt Lake and San Jose. Midfielder Manu García was blunt: "It's a 3-0 loss. So it's difficult to take positives from it." Wicky tried to find some anyway, insisting: "But I didn't see a team giving up."
Closing Take
García summed up the gap between these teams better than any stat could. "They're a very good team. They know their patterns. They know where they are at all moments," he said, before adding that "with the addition of (Thomas) Muller, I think you can see that it's having another coach in the middle of the field." Vancouver are running the league like a band that already knows every song. Kansas City are still tuning their instruments.
