Taylor Suarez's Stoppage-Time Equalizer Earns Angel City FC a 1-1 Draw at Gotham FC

Marvel spent a decade teaching audiences to stay in their seats after the credits. Angel City FC apparently took notes. With Gotham FC one minute into stoppage time and seemingly ready to bank three points, center back Emily Sams pushed forward and delivered a cross toward the front post, and substitute Taylor Suarez steered it into the bottom right corner.

That goal earned Angel City a 1-1 draw with first-place Gotham at a rain-soaked Sports Illustrated Stadium on Sunday afternoon, cancelling out Jaedyn Shaw's 66th-minute strike. Suarez had been on the field for roughly eight minutes. It was, per the club, her third goal off the bench in her last four appearances, and it stretched Angel City's unbeaten run to seven matches.

A Wet, Cagey First Half

The weather set the tone. Angel City interim head coach Leif Smerud summed it up afterward, saying, "It was a nitty gritty game where we had to really fight for every ball."

The visitors actually threatened first. Gisele Thompson forced Ann-Katrin Berger into a save in the eighth minute and had another effort blocked three minutes later. Prisca Chilufya spent much of the half sprinting in behind and getting flagged, finishing the afternoon caught offside four times, and she pulled a shot wide on a fast break in the 37th minute.

Gotham's best moment of the half came off a corner in the 20th minute, when Shaw tried her luck from a tight angle on the left and smacked the left post. Sam Kerr dragged a shot just wide in the 31st, and Rose Lavelle sent one over the bar in the 41st. For all of Gotham's possession, the home side went into the break without a shot on target, and it was 0-0 at halftime.

Shaw Finally Finds the Frame

Gotham turned the screws after the restart. Around the hour mark, the hosts strung together three corners in three minutes, with Guro Reiten and Tierna Davidson both having shots blocked from inside the box. Smerud responded by sending on Maiara Niehues for Chilufya in the 60th minute.

Six minutes later, Gotham broke through. Lavelle found Shaw in the center of the box, and the attacker sent a left-footed finish into the high center of the goal. Angel City's club recap noted it was Shaw's 10th goal of the season, and it was also Gotham's first shot on target of the match.

Angel City pushed back immediately. Savy King had a shot blocked in the 69th minute, Ally Sentnor forced a save from Berger from outside the box in the 72nd, and Niehues fired high and wide moments later. Niehues was booked in the 76th for a bad foul.

The Two Headers That Got Away

Here is where the match turned, and it was not the goal everyone will remember. In the 78th minute, off a set piece, Midge Purce headed wide from the center of the box, and seconds later Davidson's header from the left side of the six-yard box flashed just past the top left corner. Either one goes in and this recap is about Gotham cruising into the international break.

Instead, Angel City stayed within a goal. Thompson forced another save from Berger in the 82nd, and a minute later Smerud made the double change that rewrote the ending: Suarez on for Sentnor and Nealy Martin on for Ary Borges. Evelyn Shores headed wide in the 85th, Kerr missed from the right side in the 87th, and then Sams, a center back, showed up in the attacking third like she had a hall pass.

"I saw Emily making a run in behind, and I knew if she found herself with the ball in that spot, I just needed to cut across the goal and make a front post run," Suarez said. "She found a beautiful ball by my feet, and I just tapped it in at that point."

Who Stood Out

Taylor Suarez had one shot, put it on target and turned a defeat into a draw. That is efficiency you cannot coach, and Smerud was quick to praise her growth. "Several players are developing and [Taylor] is really doing that," he said, adding that she has "been amazing the last games."

Emily Sams earned the assist with the rarest of center back cameos. Suarez made sure to point that out: "Credit to her, obviously, she's a center back, so she doesn't find herself up there a lot, but I was just grateful in that moment."

Jaedyn Shaw was Gotham's most dangerous player, with three shots, the goal and the woodwork. Rose Lavelle supplied the assist, and Ann-Katrin Berger made three saves to keep Angel City quiet until the very end.

Gisele Thompson led Angel City with three shots, two of them on target, and the back line did a mountain of dirty work in the rain.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Gotham controlled 62.5 percent of the ball.
  • Shots on target: Angel City put five on goal to Gotham's one, despite taking 12 shots to Gotham's 10.
  • Corners: Gotham won eight. Angel City won zero.
  • Defending: Angel City made 32 clearances and 16 interceptions.
  • Offsides: Angel City was flagged five times, four of them on Chilufya.

What It Means

Neither side took the points, and the draw meant different things to each. Gotham moved to 16-7-4 with 55 points, but a three-match winning run ended. The two clubs also finished their regular season meetings level, after a 0-0 draw on Aug. 23.

Angel City improved to 12-7-8 with 43 points. Per the club, it has now scored in seven straight matches, is unbeaten in seven and sat seventh in the standings heading into the October international break. Its next assignment was a trip to Denver Summit FC on Oct. 17, while Gotham's schedule had it at the Washington Spirit the same day.

Closing Take

Smerud admitted his team "didn't manage to play as much as we had hoped," and the numbers back him up. But playoff races are not decided by style points. A road point against the league leader, earned in the rain by a rookie off the bench and a center back who forgot where she was supposed to stand, is the kind of result that gets a team believing in sequels. Stay for the post-credits scene, indeed.
