It was 94 degrees at kickoff in Louisville, the kind of heat that turns a soccer match into a test of patience. For 68 minutes nobody passed it. Then Evelyn Shores found half a yard outside the box and solved the whole thing with her left foot.

Shores added a second in stoppage time, and Angel City FC beat Racing Louisville FC 2-0 on Saturday night at Lynn Family Stadium. It was the first career brace for the Angel City left back, a second straight win for a team that had gone six matches without one before Monday, and a clean sheet that the club said moved it into eighth place.

A Slow Burn in the Heat

Louisville nearly struck first. In the seventh minute Macey Hodge met a set-piece cross from Katie O'Kane and headed it off the crossbar, an early reminder that Racing's set pieces were going to be a problem all night.

Angel City settled into the ball after that and Sveindís Jónsdóttir became the busiest player on the field, getting one shot blocked in the ninth minute, pulling another wide in the 15th and having a third blocked a minute later. Prisca Chilufya forced Jordyn Bloomer into a save in the 19th minute off a Gisele Thompson cross, and Ally Sentnor dragged a 24th-minute chance just wide. Racing answered with a Lauren Milliet attempt that flew high and wide, and Hodge picked up a yellow card in the 38th. A drinks break and plenty of sideways passing later, the teams went to the locker room scoreless, with exactly one shot on target between them.

The Left Foot That Broke It Open

The second half opened with more of the same. Hodge missed from inside the six-yard box off a corner in the 50th minute, and Bloomer saved a Shores header from the middle of the box in the 55th. Mirann Gacioch put one just wide in the 58th, Jónsdóttir headed past the post a minute later, and Angel City interim head coach Leif Smerud swapped Maiara Niehues in for Chilufya in the 64th.

In the 69th minute, Sarah Gorden fed Shores outside the area and Shores sent a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner. Angel City said it was Gorden's second assist of the season. Even Louisville tipped its cap. "That was an amazing finish from her," Racing defender Quincy McMahon said.

The Turning Point

Racing did not fold. Angelina Anderson saved from Kayla Fischer in the 71st minute and from substitute Maja Lardner in the 77th. Then, in the 85th, Lardner hit the crossbar with a right-footed shot from the center of the box after an Ella Hase cross. That was the equalizer, missing by the width of the woodwork.

Six minutes later Shores made Louisville pay for it. In the first minute of stoppage time she got in behind the back line, took Sentnor's pass and finished with her right foot into the bottom right corner. Two feet, two goals, no more questions. Angel City lost Savy King to an injury in the 85th minute and Jónsdóttir was booked a minute later, but the visitors saw out six minutes of added time without much drama.

The Shores Show

Shores finished with three shots, all three on target, two goals and a header that forced a save. Angel City listed it as her third goal of the season. Smerud was glowing. "The quality of Evelyn is very good. She can play both ways," he said. "Her performance today was top, and made a big difference."

Anderson made two saves and recorded her seventh shutout of the season, per the club. Shores, never one to hog the spotlight, pointed straight at the back line. "I can't say enough about our defensive unit," she said.

Sentnor's assist on the clincher and Gorden's on the opener rounded out a strong night for the Angel City spine. For Louisville, Hodge took two shots, one of which hit the bar, Lardner nearly turned the match from the bench, and Bloomer made two saves.

Shores put the halftime adjustment simply. "We came in at halftime, and we knew that we needed to push, and we had more to give," she said.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Angel City held 61.1 percent of the ball.
  • Shots: Angel City led 14 to 10, and 4 to 2 on target.
  • Woodwork: Louisville hit the bar twice, through Hodge and Lardner.
  • Passing: Angel City completed 353 of 434 passes; Louisville completed 196 of 268.
  • Tackles: Angel City won 11 of its 16 attempted tackles.

What It Means

Angel City improved to 9-5-8 (wins, draws, losses) with 32 points and closed a three-game, 13-day road trip with six points, following Monday's 5-2 win at Boston Legacy FC. It also got some payback for a 2-1 home loss to Louisville in July. After the Boston win, Smerud had made his intentions clear: "We want revenge." Per Louisville's own recap, Angel City now holds the final playoff spot. Next up is Denver Summit FC at BMO Stadium on Friday.

Racing fell to 7-2-14 with 23 points and has now lost three straight. Louisville's recap noted it was the first time the team had been shut out since July 10, and that Racing sat 13th, nine points behind Angel City, with seven games left. Head coach Bev Yanez summed it up in three words: "The sport's cruel." She also argued the scoreline flattered the visitors. "Really felt like it wasn't a 2-0 game," Yanez said.

Midfielder Katie O'Kane promised there would be no white flag. "We'll never stop pushing," she said.

Closing Take

Some like it hot. Angel City, apparently, likes it at 94 degrees with a clean sheet and a left back moonlighting as a striker. Smerud called it a grind, and he meant it as a compliment. "Today was a grind, and to win a game like this in the way we did, tells the players that this is what it takes," he said. If this is what the playoff push looks like, Angel City just learned it can win ugly, sweaty and on the road.
