Taylor Suarez's Record-Fast Sub Goal Caps Angel City FC's 3-1 Win Over Seattle Reign
Taylor Suarez scored 21 seconds after coming on, the fastest substitute goal in NWSL history per the club, as Angel City FC beat Seattle Reign FC 3-1 at BMO Stadium.

Twenty-one seconds. That is roughly how long it takes to tie your shoes, adjust your shin guards and jog onto the field. Taylor Suarez used it to put herself in the NWSL record book.
The Angel City FC rookie came on in the 81st minute and scored almost immediately, completing a 3-1 win over Seattle Reign FC on Wednesday night at BMO Stadium. According to Angel City, it was the fastest goal by an in-game substitute in league history. Ally Sentnor converted a first-half penalty, Ary Borges headed in a second before the break, and the win gave the club the first 10-win season in its history.
Sentnor From the Spot, Borges From the Corner
Angel City carried the early play without forcing Claudia Dickey into anything, with Sveindís Jónsdóttir heading over in the fifth minute and Gisele Thompson just missing in the seventh. The breakthrough came from a scramble. In the 18th minute, Seattle blocked shots from Carina Lageyre and Maiara Niehues in quick succession, and the second one struck Angharad James-Turner's arm. Penalty. Sentnor sent it into the bottom left corner in the 20th minute, her fourth goal of the season and her second straight penalty after converting one in the 3-3 draw with Denver five days earlier, per the club.
Seattle should have been level five minutes later. Sarah Gorden's half clearance fell to Jess Fishlock on the right side of the box, and the Reign captain's looping shot clanged off the left post. Maddie Mercado then forced Angelina Anderson into a save in the 30th minute, and Maddie Dahlien missed narrowly a minute later. It was the Reign's best spell of the night, and it produced nothing.
Angel City made them pay. In the 40th minute, off a corner, Evelyn Shores delivered a cross into the middle and Borges headed it into the bottom left corner. Angel City said it was her third goal of the season. "I'm so happy to score goals and [I know] how important this game was for us," Borges said.
A Second Half of Blocks and Bodies
The second half was tighter and uglier. Seattle finished with slightly more of the ball, 51.2 percent, but rarely got through. Angel City kept getting shots off and Seattle kept getting bodies in front of them: Niehues in the 50th minute, Sentnor in the 69th, Prisca Chilufya in the 71st. The Reign blocked seven Angel City attempts on the night.
Laura Harvey went to her bench in the 72nd minute, sending on Sally Menti and Nérilia Mondésir for James-Turner and Fishlock. Mondésir forced a save from Anderson two minutes later, the Reign's only shot on target in the second half until the very end. Holly Ward and Emily Mason followed in the 79th.
The Turning Point
The 81st minute, and the clock barely had time to register it. Angel City interim head coach Leif Smerud sent Suarez on for Jónsdóttir, Shores found her down the left, and Suarez cut inside and fired from the left side of the box into the top right corner. Game over at 3-0, and a piece of league history on top of it.
"I just saw the opening to run and finish, and that's what I did," Suarez said. It was her second goal of her rookie season, according to the club. Smerud, who said he has pushed her on production, liked what he saw. "I've challenged Taylor on one thing, and that's output," he said.
Seattle got one back in the second minute of stoppage time, and it was a beauty. Sofia Huerta picked up the ball, carried it into the middle and hit a right-footed shot from outside the box into the top right corner. It was her 41st NWSL regular-season goal, her third of 2026 and her second in two matches, per the Reign. The club also noted she reached 10,000 regular-season minutes for Seattle, only the third player to do so for the Reign and the 20th in league history to log that many minutes for one club.
Shores, Sentnor and the Supporting Cast
Shores was the quiet engine of the night, with two assists from left back. Angel City said that gave her seven for the season. Sentnor added her goal from the spot on three shots, and Borges scored on one of her two attempts.
Anderson made two saves and was beaten only by Huerta's late strike, which no goalkeeper was stopping. At the other end, Dickey did not make a single save. That is not an indictment; Angel City put only three shots on target all night, and all three went in.
For Seattle, Fishlock took three shots and hit the post, and Huerta's goal provided the only real highlight in a frustrating trip.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Angel City 14, Seattle 8. On target: 3 apiece.
- Finishing: Angel City scored on all three of its shots on target.

- Possession: Seattle 51.2 percent, Angel City 48.8 percent.

What It Means
Angel City improved to 10-6-8 with 36 points, one point behind Seattle. The club said the win also set a club record with four straight multi-goal matches, part of a 2026 campaign that has already produced club highs in goals, clean sheets and road wins. Angel City is unbeaten in four, with road wins at Boston Legacy FC and Racing Louisville FC and the draw with Denver before this one. Next up is a trip to the Utah Royals on Sunday, Sept. 20.
Seattle fell to 11-4-9 with 37 points, and a three-match winning streak came to an end. The teams drew 2-2 in Seattle in August. The Reign stay on the road for a Saturday trip to Denver Summit FC.
"There was a lot of pressure going into this game," Smerud said. "We knew how important it was, and to deal with that in the way we did, I'm very impressed by the team."
Closing Take
Every summer blockbuster has the cameo that steals the trailer: a few seconds of screen time, all of the clips. Suarez was Wednesday's cameo. Smerud said there is "a competitive spirit in us now that I like a lot and that really pays off," and on a night when three shots on target produced three goals, it was hard to argue.
