Minnesota United threw itself a party on Wednesday night. Allianz Field was dressed up for the club's Year 10 Celebration, and the opponent was a fitting one: Atlanta United, the side the Loons faced in their first-ever MLS home match. Then Atlanta showed up and ate all the cake.

Tomás Jacob scored a first-half stunner, Tristan Muyumba buried the winner in the 78th minute, and Atlanta United beat Minnesota United 2-1 in Saint Paul. Anthony Markanich had pulled the hosts level with a header that survived a VAR review, but Minnesota out-shot Atlanta 13-10 and still walked off with nothing on the night it most wanted something.

The Loons Start Fast, Hoyos Starts Faster

Minnesota came out with energy and nearly cashed in early. Marcus Caldeira shot just wide in the 11th minute, and in the 16th Markanich got his head on a Morris Duggan flick at the back post from inside the six-yard box. Lucas Hoyos was equal to it, a stop Atlanta United called one of his best of the year. Markanich had another header from a Duggan cross in the 28th, but this one sailed high and wide.

It was a scrappy, card-happy half. Júnior Alonso, Michael Boxall and Joaquín Pereyra were all booked inside the opening 32 minutes, and the referee, Joshua Encarnación, would end up showing seven yellows on the night. Tomás Chancalay missed narrowly to the left in the 34th, and Minnesota looked like the team more likely to break through.

Instead, Atlanta struck. Off a recycled corner in the 37th minute, Muyumba's long-range effort was blocked and the ball dropped to Jacob on the right side of the box. The Argentine right back met it with a right-footed half-volley and sent it into the top left corner. Chancalay nearly answered right before the break, curling a shot just wide after a corner, and Atlanta went in up 1-0.

Crossbar, VAR, Chaos

Atlanta came out swinging after halftime. Alexey Miranchuk slipped Miguel Almirón through in the 50th minute, and Drake Callender kept the shot out with what Atlanta United described as a foot save. That was the visitors' best shot at a second, and it would come back to matter.

Minnesota kept leaning on set pieces. In the 58th, Owen Gene whipped a cross toward the back post, Duggan's left-footed effort crashed off the crossbar, and Markanich was right there to nod the rebound in from point-blank range. VAR took a look and confirmed the goal. By the Loons' own count, it was Markanich's fifth MLS goal of the season.

Both benches got busy. Atlanta head coach Tata Martino sent on Luke Brennan and Steven Alzate in the 64th minute, and Minnesota's Cameron Knowles answered with Aziel Jackson and Mamadou Dieng four minutes later. Per Minnesota, it was Jackson's first appearance since returning to the club.

Then came the counter. In the 78th, Atlanta broke the other way, Jacob fed Miranchuk, and Miranchuk laid it to Muyumba in the middle of the box. Muyumba sold a fake shot and then smashed a left-footed one into the top left corner. Hoyos then made two saves in the 81st, stopping substitute Kelvin Yeboah and Markanich in quick succession, and Mauricio González's late header flashed just past the top right corner in the 89th. Atlanta hung on.

The Men Who Made It

Tristan Muyumba was the difference. He took two shots, put one on target and scored with it. According to Atlanta United, it was his third straight match with a goal, making him the ninth player in club history to put together that kind of run.

Tomás Jacob was everywhere. His goal was only his second of the 2026 regular season, per the club, and he started the move that led to the winner. Atlanta noted he became the eighth player on the roster with multiple goals this season.

Alexey Miranchuk picked up the assist on Muyumba's goal, which Atlanta United said was his fourth consecutive match with an assist, equaling the longest regular-season run in club history.

Lucas Hoyos made three saves, all of them on shots from inside the box, and Stian Gregersen held the back line together. The club credited the Norwegian with a match-high six aerial duels won, plus six interceptions, which it called an MLS best for him.

For Minnesota, Anthony Markanich did just about everything a left midfielder can do in the attacking third: five shots, three on target and the equalizer. He deserved more help.

The Turning Point

Two moments, about half an hour apart, decided this. The first was Callender's 50th-minute save on Almirón, which kept Minnesota alive long enough to equalize. The second was the 78th minute, when the Loons, who had been the better team for long stretches after the restart, got caught in transition. Minnesota's own account pointed to a missed tackle that let Atlanta through. Two passes later, the ball was in the net and the party was over.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Minnesota 13 (4 on target), Atlanta 10 (3 on target).
  • Saves: Hoyos 3, Callender 1.
  • Clearances: Atlanta 28, Minnesota 6.
  • Interceptions: Atlanta 19, Minnesota 5.
  • Cards: Seven yellows, four for Minnesota and three for Atlanta.

Atlanta Finds a Pulse, Minnesota Keeps Searching

Atlanta United improved to 5-3-12 with 18 points. It was the club's second straight win after a 2-1 home result against Red Bull New York on Aug. 15, and only its second road win of the season, the first coming at Toronto on April 25. Paulo Díaz also made his Atlanta United debut off the bench. The 5-Stripes host Sporting Kansas City on Sunday night.

Minnesota fell to 6-7-7 with 25 points, and the club's own recap put the Loons 12th in the Western Conference. They have not won in nine regular-season matches since a 3-2 victory at Columbus on May 2, with five draws and four losses in that stretch. Next up is a Saturday night trip to San Jose.

Party Crashers

Atlanta pulled a full Wedding Crashers on Minnesota's anniversary: showed up uninvited, made themselves at home, scored the best moments of the night and left before anyone could stop them. The Loons will remember the occasion, the history and the build-up. Atlanta will remember the two shots that mattered.
