The Kansas City Current hit the crossbar inside the first two minutes at Centreville Bank Stadium. Boston Legacy FC hit the net 16 minutes later, and that was the whole story.

Aïssata Traoré pounced on a loose ball after a corner in the 18th minute, and Boston made it stand up for a 1-0 win over Kansas City on Saturday in Pawtucket, R.I., in front of 8,939 fans. Casey Murphy made four saves, the Legacy survived a red card to Ella Stevens deep in stoppage time, and the expansion club posted its third shutout in four games while splitting the season series with the Current at a win apiece.

A Warning Shot, Then a Gut Punch

Kansas City started like the more dangerous team. Inside the first two minutes, Croix Bethune swung in a corner and Haley Hopkins headed it off the crossbar. Bethune then forced a turnover and fired a shot that a Boston defender deflected, and for a few minutes the Current looked ready to make it a long afternoon for the hosts.

Boston settled, then struck from a set piece of its own. In the 18th minute, a Legacy corner deflected off Bianca St-Georges and dropped to Traoré in the center of the box. She drilled a low, right-footed shot into the bottom left corner.

The Current nearly answered immediately. Three minutes later, Hopkins got in on goal off a Lo'eau LaBonta pass, and Murphy won the one-on-one. Kansas City pushed for the rest of the half, and the best of it arrived in first-half stoppage time, when Bethune curled a shot that Murphy saved and Debinha sent the follow-up just over the bar.

Kansas City Pushes, Boston Bends

Kansas City made a change at halftime, with Vanessa DiBernardo replacing Gianna Paul, and the second half settled into a pattern: the Current probing, Boston defending in numbers and looking for the counter.

The Legacy nearly put the game away in the 63rd minute. Nichelle Prince got in behind, slipped past goalkeeper Marisa Jordan and laid the ball across for Traoré at close range, but Traoré scuffed her left-footed finish wide. She was replaced by Stevens four minutes later.

Murphy did the rest. She stopped a Debinha shot from outside the box in the 70th minute and got down to Hopkins' header in the 77th after Izzy Rodriguez found her with a cross. Bethune's shot from distance in the 81st went just over. LaBonta was booked in the 83rd, and although Kansas City had already sent on Penelope Hocking and Amelia White, the chances thinned out.

The stoppage time was chaos. Alba Caño had a shot blocked, Jorelyn Carabalí tested Jordan from long range, and then a VAR review upgraded a card for Stevens, who was sent off for violent conduct in the sixth added minute. Boston played the final minutes a player down and still did not give up a clean look.

The Standouts

Aïssata Traoré took three shots and scored with the one that mattered. The close-range miss in the 63rd minute will bug her, but the Legacy will take one finish from three looks every night.

Casey Murphy made four saves, and the timing was everything. Two came on Hopkins chances, one on Bethune and one on Debinha. If the 21st-minute stop goes the other way, this is a different game.

The back line deserves its share. With Lilly Reale, Emerson Elgin, Jorelyn Carabalí and Bianca St-Georges in front of her, Murphy faced four shots on target all night, and Kansas City completed only four of its 20 crosses. Boston also made 16 interceptions, one more than the visitors.

Haley Hopkins was Kansas City's most dangerous player, with three shots, two on target and that early header off the bar. Croix Bethune created the opening chance and added three shots of her own.

The Current marked two milestones, per the club. Debinha reached 5,000 regular-season minutes for Kansas City in the fifth minute, the seventh player in franchise history to do so, and DiBernardo became the 13th player in Current history to make 50 regular-season appearances for the club.

The Turning Point

Murphy's save on Hopkins in the 21st minute. Boston had led for three minutes, Kansas City had already rattled the frame once, and an equalizer there would have flipped the momentum right back. Murphy came out big, the lead held, and the Current never got a cleaner chance.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Boston 13, Kansas City 9. On target: Kansas City 4, Boston 2.
  • Saves: Murphy 4, Jordan 1.
  • Possession: Boston 51.5 percent, Kansas City 48.5.
  • Crosses: Kansas City attempted 20 and completed four.
  • Cards: Boston had a yellow and a red, Kansas City one yellow.

What It Means

Boston improves to 5-4-8 with 19 points and bounces back from a 2-1 home loss to Washington six days earlier. The Legacy's last four matches now include shutout wins over Chicago, Orlando and Kansas City, and the club squared the season series after losing 1-0 in Kansas City on May 30. Boston visits Denver Summit FC on Aug. 2.

Kansas City drops to 8-1-7 with 25 points and is now winless in three, after a 3-0 loss at Orlando and a 2-2 home draw with San Diego. The Current list themselves sixth after this match, with Boston 12th. Their next two matches are at home, against Racing Louisville on Wednesday, July 29, and Angel City FC on Aug. 1.

Chris Armas did not sound rattled. "There are a lot of controllables that we think we can do a little bit better," the head coach said. "But this team responds like champions and winners. We have a good work ethic, we have a process and we have a way of doing things. It's going to be right back to work."

Closing Take

This was a one-hit wonder in the best possible way. Traoré dropped the single in the 18th minute, and Boston spent the rest of the night, red card and all, making sure it stayed at number one.
