Bárbara Olivieri Gives Boston Legacy Its First Road Win, 1-0 at the Orlando Pride
Bárbara Olivieri scored in the 17th minute and Boston Legacy FC held on through a late Orlando push to win 1-0 at Inter&Co Stadium, the club's first road win and second straight shutout.

Five trips away from home had produced two draws, three losses and exactly zero wins for Boston Legacy FC. The sixth trip finally came with a souvenir.
Bárbara Olivieri scored in the 17th minute, the Legacy defended for the next 80 or so, and Boston beat the Orlando Pride 1-0 on Wednesday night at Inter&Co Stadium for what the club called its first road win. It was also a second straight shutout for Boston and a second win over Orlando this season, after a 2-1 result in Boston back on May 12. Seb Hines' side, five days removed from a 3-0 statement against the Kansas City Current, never found the equalizer.
Stevens Serves, Olivieri Finishes
The opening stretch was mostly two teams checking each other's IDs at the door. Lilly Reale sent a left-footed shot high and wide in the sixth minute, and Jorelyn Carabalí just missed to the left with a header off an Alba Caño corner in the 13th.
Four minutes later, Boston had its lead. Ella Stevens found Olivieri in the center of the box, and Olivieri's left-footed finish beat Anna Moorhouse into the bottom right corner. Olivieri took two shots all night and put one on target. That was the one that counted, and it was her first goal of the season.
The Legacy kept poking for a second. Carabalí sent a direct free kick wide in the 25th minute, Caño missed narrowly from the middle of the box a minute later, and Annie Karich forced Moorhouse into a save from distance in the 39th. Orlando's best first-half look came from Angelina, whose left-footed attempt off a Cori Dyke cross slid just wide in the 28th.
Haley McCutcheon was booked in the 26th minute and Aïssata Traoré in the 35th, and a video review in first-half stoppage time checked a possible Boston penalty before the call came back no. By the time the whistle went, the clock read eight minutes past 45, a long, sweaty wait for a team holding a one-goal lead.
Orlando Turns Up the Volume
Hines went to his bench at halftime, sending Julie Doyle on for Oihane Hernández. That entrance was Doyle's 100th appearance for the Pride across all competitions, and the club said she became the sixth player in Pride history to get there.
The hosts came out of the locker room with a different energy. Solai Washington missed high and wide in the 48th minute, then forced a save from Casey Murphy at the bottom right corner in the 50th after Angelina slipped her through. Doyle sent one over the bar a minute later, and Murphy dealt with a Marta attempt from the left side of the box in the 55th.
Then Hines played his trump card, bringing on Barbra Banda for Ovalle in the 60th minute. According to the Legacy's account, Banda almost made it pay right away, winning a footrace behind the back line before Carabalí cut her off with a tackle. Washington missed narrowly from the right side in the 64th, and Banda fired one too high from the center of the box in the 77th.
Boston answered with fresh legs: Amanda Gutierres for Stevens in the 63rd minute, then Aleigh Gambone and Sammy Smith for Caño and Traoré in the 76th.
Holding the Door Shut
If you want the moment this game tilted for good, it came in the final 15 minutes, when Orlando threw everything at the wall and none of it stuck. The Pride earned back-to-back corners in the 86th and 87th minutes, and Nicole Payne, Marta and Payne again all had shots blocked between the 87th and the 90th.
Both clubs' reports mention the woodwork. Boston described two late scares: a near-post ball that Carabalí deflected off the post and out, and a corner that also hit the post. The fourth official added five minutes for Orlando to find something. It got a Sammy Smith yellow card in the second minute of stoppage time and not much else.
Who Delivered
Bárbara Olivieri was the headline, and not only for the goal. She also drew three fouls from the left side of midfield.
Casey Murphy was the quiet MVP. She made two saves, both inside the first 10 minutes of the second half, and the back line in front of her finished with 30 clearances to Orlando's 18.
Solai Washington did everything but score for Orlando, leading all players with four shots before coming off in the 68th minute. Only one of them hit the target.
Angelina also reached a milestone of her own, making what the Pride called her 100th NWSL appearance across all competitions.
Hines did not sugarcoat it. "Disappointed with the result, obviously," he said. "They took their chances really well, and I thought towards the end of the game, we were really trying. We were pushing, the ball wouldn't land for us and it's fine margins in this league."
He added: "Never fault the effort of the players, they always give 110 percent, but tonight just wasn't our night."
The Clean Sheet, by the Numbers
- Shots: Orlando 13, Boston 8, with two on goal apiece.
- Blocked: Six of Orlando's 13 shots never got through.
- Crosses: Orlando attempted 21 and completed two.
- Clearances: Boston 30, Orlando 18.
- Possession: Orlando 52 percent, Boston 48.
Where Both Clubs Stand
Boston moves to four wins, four draws and seven losses, good for 16 points. It is the first time the Legacy have won back-to-back games this season, following the 2-0 home win over the Chicago Stars on July 10. Add the 2-2 draw with Bay FC before that, and Boston is unbeaten in three. The gap to Orlando is now four points.
Orlando slips to six wins, two draws and seven losses with 20 points. The loss also ended a run of three straight regular-season home wins for the Pride, after victories over North Carolina, Bay FC and Kansas City in Orlando. Hines pointed to the quick turnaround from the Kansas City win and said the momentum simply did not carry into the first half.
Orlando visits the Utah Royals on Saturday, July 18, at America First Field. Boston hosts the Washington Spirit at Centreville Bank Stadium on Sunday, July 19.
Final Word
Expansion seasons play like the first season of a prestige TV show: uneven, sometimes frustrating, and worth sticking with because every so often an episode shows you what the thing could become. For Boston, Wednesday in Orlando was that episode. One clean pass, one cool finish and 80 minutes of bodies in front of the ball. Not glamorous. Absolutely binge-worthy if you wear green.
