Colorado went down to 10 men and still took the lead. Minnesota went a man up and still needed an own goal from the strangest sequence of the night to escape Commerce City with anything. On a rainy midweek night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, nobody got the ending they wanted.

The Colorado Rapids and Minnesota United FC drew 2-2 on Wednesday night. Darren Yapi and substitute Georgi Minoungou scored for Colorado, while Kelvin Yeboah scored one for the Loons and forced Loïc Williams into the own goal that leveled it in the 83rd minute. The Rapids said the point extended their home unbeaten streak to nine matches.

Colorado Knock, Then Break Through

The Rapids had the ball and the ideas early. Yapi had four shots blocked inside the first 19 minutes, picking up a yellow card in between, and Morgan Whittaker forced Drake Callender into a save in the 29th minute. Minnesota's best moment of the half came in the 34th minute, when Tomás Chancalay got a shot away from the middle of the box, only for it to be blocked.

Just as it looked like the half would end scoreless, Colorado struck. Paxten Aaronson turned just outside the box and slipped the ball wide to Keegan Rosenberry, whose cross found Yapi for a low first-time finish into the right side of the net in the first minute of stoppage time. The Rapids said it was Yapi's fourth goal of the season, Rosenberry's first assist of 2026 and a club-high 10th assist for Aaronson, who has seven goal contributions in his last six MLS appearances.

Yeboah Pounces

Nico Hansen had to save from Chancalay seconds into the second half, and in the 52nd minute Minnesota were level. Yeboah read a Colorado pass, stepped in front of it and ran clear before finishing into the bottom right corner. Minnesota said it was his 16th goal of the season, extending his club single-season scoring record.

Rapids boss Matt Wells made a double change in the 60th minute, sending on Josh Atencio and Sayed Abu Farhi for Aaronson and Rosenberry. Abu Farhi's night lasted eight minutes. After a VAR review upgraded his card, he was sent off for violent conduct in the 68th minute following a sideline tangle that Minnesota said involved Loons captain Michael Boxall. Two minutes later, Yapi had to come off because of an injury, and Minoungou replaced him.

Ten Men, One Lead, One Very Weird Equalizer

You would have bet on Minnesota at that point. Instead, Colorado went ahead. Kosi Thompson, on for barely two minutes, slalomed down the flank and fired the ball across the face of goal. It deflected off the Minnesota goalkeeper, per the Rapids, and Minoungou bundled it over the line from point-blank range in the 74th minute. The club said it was his first MLS goal for Colorado.

Minnesota coach Cameron Knowles answered with a triple change in the 82nd minute, sending on Aziel Jackson, Nectarios Triantis and Joaquín Pereyra. It worked within a minute. Pereyra fed Yeboah, who won a one-on-one duel with Hansen as the keeper came off his line, carried the ball toward the end line and sent it toward the goal line. Williams, scrambling back, knocked it into his own net. Minnesota's recap called it arguably one of the strangest own goals ever, and nobody watching would push back.

Yeboah had two more chances to win it, narrowly missing in the 85th minute and finding the side netting in the 90th. At the other end, Callender produced a big stop on Ibrahim Sadiq in stoppage time, and Rob Holding headed over from a late corner.

Who Mattered

Kelvin Yeboah scored, created the own goal and took four shots, which is a lot of damage from a striker on a team that had 39.7 percent of the ball.

Darren Yapi was Colorado's busiest attacker, with six shots and the opening goal before his injury exit.

Georgi Minoungou made the most of about 20 minutes plus stoppage time off the bench with his first MLS goal for the club.

Kosi Thompson needed two minutes on the field to create Colorado's second goal, according to the Rapids' description of the play.

Drake Callender made only two saves, but the one on Sadiq in stoppage time saved the point.

The Turning Point

Abu Farhi's red card in the 68th minute changed the math. Colorado still found a goal with 10 men, which says plenty about their spirit, but playing a man down for the final 22 minutes plus stoppage time eventually cost them. Minnesota's equalizer arrived a minute after Knowles threw on three fresh players, and one of them, Pereyra, started it. The Rapids simply could not match them for numbers.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Colorado had 60.3 percent of the ball.
  • Shots: Colorado 15, Minnesota 11. On target, it was 4-2.
  • Crosses: The Rapids attempted 25 crosses and completed five.
  • Offsides: Minnesota were caught offside four times.
  • Discipline: Colorado had two yellows and a red, Minnesota one yellow.

What It Means

Colorado moved to 11-5-13 (wins, draws, losses) with 38 points, and the Rapids listed themselves ninth in the Western Conference after the match. It was their third straight home draw, following a 3-3 with Seattle on Sept. 19 and a 1-1 with San Jose on Oct. 10. They head to Portland on Saturday.

Minnesota moved to 7-10-12 with 31 points and, per the Rapids, sat 14th in the West. It was the Loons' second consecutive 2-2 draw after the same score against Houston on Oct. 10, and their eighth straight league match without a win. Colorado won the first meeting 1-0 in Minnesota on May 13. Minnesota host St. Louis on Saturday.

The Closing Take

The own goal looked like something out of a sitcom blooper reel, and it rescued a point Minnesota badly needed. But Minnesota started the night with six games left, per the club, and a point is a stopgap, not a plan. Colorado, meanwhile, keep finding ways not to lose at home, even when their own discipline tries to sabotage them.
