Denver Summit Beat Gotham FC 3-0, Snap Gotham's 10-Match Unbeaten Run and Complete Season Sweep

Yuzuki Yamamoto, Olivia Thomas and Yazmeen Ryan scored after halftime as Denver Summit FC beat Gotham FC 3-0, ending Gotham's 10-match unbeaten run and sweeping the season series.

For 49 minutes on Sunday afternoon in Centennial, Gotham FC looked exactly like a team that had not lost in two months: compact, patient and allergic to drama. Then Ayo Oke bent a cross into the middle, Yuzuki Yamamoto hammered it into the top right corner, and the whole afternoon changed shape.

Denver Summit FC never let go of the thread. Olivia Thomas and Yazmeen Ryan scored late, and the Summit beat Gotham 3-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 12,372 at Centennial Stadium. The result ended Gotham's 10-match regular-season unbeaten run, a club record by Gotham's own count, and completed a season sweep for an expansion side that apparently treats the reigning champions like a personal hobby.

Forty-Five Minutes of Chess

The first half was a feeling-out process with a few haymakers mixed in. Ryan dragged a shot wide inside two minutes, and the 12th minute delivered a proper goalmouth pinball sequence: Megan Reid's header was blocked, Ann-Katrin Berger saved Melissa Kössler's close-range effort, and Reid's follow-up was blocked again.

Gotham answered with flashes. Jaedyn Shaw slid a left-footed shot just past the right post in the 27th minute after a Guro Reiten cross, and Sam Kerr kept testing the offside line, getting flagged twice before the break. The visitors' best look came in the 44th minute, when Jordynn Dudley's low strike from the right side forced Kat Asman into a low save. Ryan and Delanie Sheehan each sailed long-range attempts just over the bar, and the teams went in at 0-0.

The Break Arrives

Gotham head coach Juan Carlos Amorós sent on Tess Boade for Dudley at halftime, the first of two Gotham debuts on the day. Five minutes later, Denver struck. Oke, fed by Kössler according to the Summit, whipped a cross into the box, and Yamamoto finished from the center with her right foot. Denver noted it was her second career goal, and that she had now scored in consecutive matches.

Gotham pushed back hard. Asman saved Kerr's shot from the right side of the box in the 58th minute, Reiten went close with a left-footed shot a minute later, and Jaelin Howell had a 63rd-minute attempt blocked before Asman stopped her again in the 73rd. Amorós went to the bench twice in the 62nd minute, bringing on Meredith Speck for her Gotham debut and Savannah McCaskill. Nick Cushing answered with a triple change two minutes later, introducing Natasha Flint, Devin Lynch and Natalie Means. Yamamoto went off injured in the 68th minute, with Yuna McCormack replacing her.

The Turning Point

The match still felt live until the 82nd minute, and that is where Denver's bench won it. Thomas, on for Kössler three minutes earlier, picked up the ball just inside Gotham's half, carried it into the box and finished across Berger into the bottom left corner off Ryan's pass. The Summit said it was the rookie forward's second career goal in as many matches.

That goal took the air out of the comeback. Gotham lost Shaw to an injury in the 85th minute, Andrea Kitahata pulled a shot just wide a minute later, and Denver sealed it in the 88th. Ryan played the ball to Flint, got it back near the top of the box and drove a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. Seven minutes of stoppage time produced one final McCaskill header, which Asman held.

Who Ran the Show

Ryan was the best player on the field. She took three shots, scored once, assisted Thomas and, per Denver, became the fifth Summit player this season with multiple goal contributions in a single match. It was her sixth goal of the campaign, and she looked like the only player on the pitch who knew the plot twist was coming.

Asman deserves her own paragraph. She made four saves, three of them after the break from Kerr, Howell and McCaskill, and Denver said the clean sheet was the first of her NWSL career. It was also the club's fifth shutout of the 2026 season and its first since a 1-0 win at Louisville on May 29.

Yamamoto and Thomas each needed exactly one shot to score. That is efficiency bordering on a cheat code.

For Gotham, Howell led the team with two shots and Kerr made her 50th regular-season appearance for the club, which Gotham said made her the 26th player in club history to reach that mark. Denise O'Sullivan made her first Gotham start in her fourth appearance.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Gotham held 54 percent and still lost by three.
  • Shots: Denver led 12 to 9; each side put four on target, and Denver scored on three of its four.
  • Saves: Asman made four. Berger made one.
  • Offside: Gotham were flagged five times, twice each for Kerr and Speck.
  • Crosses: Gotham attempted 20 and completed six.

What It Means

Denver improved to 8-6-8 (wins, draws, losses) with 30 points and has now stacked back-to-back home wins after hammering Chicago 6-1 eight days earlier. Per the club, the Summit have scored nine goals across those two home dates. More importantly, Denver completed its first season sweep of any opponent in its inaugural campaign, following a 2-0 win at Gotham in March, and the Summit said no other club had done that to Gotham this year. Next up is a trip to Angel City FC on Friday.

Gotham fell to 13-6-4 with 45 points. The defeat was the club's first in the regular season since July 4 at San Diego, and Gotham's recap noted it would stay atop the standings regardless of the weekend's other results. Amorós did not dress it up. "[It's] disappointing," he said, before pointing straight at Friday's trip to Racing Louisville FC.

"It's very difficult to do what this team is doing in terms of an unbeaten run and winning every game. But losing a game can happen," Amorós said.

Closing Take

Every great run needs a villain, and Gotham just found out who keeps showing up in theirs. Denver has played the champions twice and outscored them 5-0, which is the soccer version of the new kid beating the final boss on the first try and then doing it again to prove it was not a glitch. Amorós framed the response as the real test. "It's not only about how you lose the game, it's how you recover after that," he said. The table still says Gotham. The head-to-head says Denver.
