Janine Sonis Scores Twice in Return to Houston as Denver Summit FC Rout Houston Dash 4-1

Former Dash defender Janine Sonis scored twice, both set up by Yazmeen Ryan, as Denver Summit FC beat the Houston Dash 4-1 at Shell Energy Stadium on Jane Campbell's 200th appearance night.

Janine Sonis scored her first career goal at Shell Energy Stadium as a Houston Dash rookie back in 2016, according to Denver Summit FC. A decade later, she came back wearing Denver colors, waited out a long weather delay, and scored twice more in the same building. Sometimes the script writes itself.

Denver beat the Houston Dash 4-1 on Saturday night in front of 7,111 fans. Sonis scored in the 15th and 72nd minutes, Natasha Flint and Delanie Sheehan added goals, and Yazmeen Ryan set up both of Sonis' finishes. Maggie Graham's penalty in the 45th minute was Houston's only reply. The four goals were the most Denver had scored in a match this season.

Former Dash, Current Problem

This was a reunion with an edge. Denver's own recap counted four former Dash players in its lineup: Sonis, goalkeeper Abby Smith, Ryan and Sheehan. Houston had its own reason to celebrate before kickoff. Captain Jane Campbell made her 200th appearance for the club across all competitions, and both clubs noted she is the first goalkeeper in NWSL history to reach that mark with a single team. Danielle Colaprico also reached 200 regular season starts, which the Dash said makes her the fourth player and third field player in league history to get there.

Then Denver spoiled the party. Campbell kept out Ayo Oke in the 10th minute, but the Summit were coming in waves. In the 15th, Ryan found Sonis on the left side of the six-yard box, and the Denver captain lashed it into the roof of the net. Denver said it was her first goal of the season.

The visitors kept pushing. Ryan, Flint and Melissa Kössler all had attempts blocked in a busy two-minute stretch starting in the 23rd minute, and Campbell had to save a Natalie Means drive in the 27th. Houston's best answer came from Avery Patterson, who forced Smith into a save in the 28th. Six minutes later, Flint found space in the middle of the box and drilled a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. Denver's recap said it was her fourth goal of the season and her third straight match with a goal.

A Lifeline, Then a Header

Houston got a pulse right before the break. Flint was penalized for a foul on Colaprico in the box in the 39th minute, VAR confirmed the decision, and Graham converted to the bottom right corner in the 45th. Houston said it was her second goal of the season. Denver said it was the first penalty the Summit had faced all season. Nine minutes of added time followed, and the Dash went to the locker room down 2-1 and very much alive.

That lasted four minutes into the second half.

The Turning Point

In the 49th minute, Oke whipped in a cross and Sheehan, another former Dash player, headed it in from very close range. Whatever halftime plan Houston had built around one goal suddenly needed two, and the Dash never really threatened again. Houston did not attempt a shot between the restart and the 77th minute, and the Dash were caught offside eight times on the night, four of them by Kate Faasse.

Denver sensed a rout. Kössler headed a Sonis delivery just wide off a corner in the 53rd minute, and coach Nick Cushing's side controlled the tempo from there. It also absorbed some disruption. Oke was replaced by Yuna McCormack because of an injury in the 60th minute, and Carson Pickett came on for Means at the same time. It did not matter. In the 72nd, Ryan and Sonis linked up again, and Sonis finished with her left foot from the right side of the box. Denver said it was her second career brace and her first since 2024.

Houston's late push produced a Leah Klenke effort over the bar in the 77th minute and a long-range shot that Smith saved in the 79th, but Denver saw out five minutes of stoppage time without much fuss.

The Ryan and Sonis Show

Janine Sonis scored twice on two shots, both on target, while starting at left back, per ESPN's lineup. That is outrageous efficiency from a defender.

Yazmeen Ryan had two assists, both to Sonis, and kept Houston's back line on its heels all night.

Natasha Flint scored and kept her hot streak rolling. Delanie Sheehan turned her only shot into a goal.

For Houston, Maggie Graham scored from the spot, and Jane Campbell made two saves on a milestone night that deserved a better ending.

By the Numbers

  • Shots: Denver 14, Houston 5.
  • Shots on target: Denver 7, Houston 3.
  • Offsides: Houston 8, Denver 1.
  • Corners: Denver 8, Houston 3.
  • Possession: Denver 52.8 percent, Houston 47.2.

Where Both Sides Stand

Denver improves to two wins, three draws and three losses with nine points. This was the Summit's first win since a 2-0 victory at Gotham FC on March 25, ending a four-match winless run that included back-to-back 3-2 losses to San Diego Wave FC and at Boston Legacy FC. Both of Denver's wins have now come on the road. Next up is a home date with the Orlando Pride on Saturday, May 16.

Houston slips to three wins, one draw and four losses with 10 points. The Dash closed a stretch of three matches in nine days without a win, following a 0-0 draw with Seattle Reign FC and a 2-0 loss at Utah. They have scored one goal in their last four matches, and that goal came from the penalty spot. Houston said it has now converted three of its four penalty attempts this season, the most attempts of any club. The Dash travel to the Kansas City Current on Friday, May 15.

The Final Word

There is a certain kind of sports movie where the hero returns to her old town, the locals cheer her name before kickoff, and then she breaks their hearts anyway. Denver's version had four leads instead of one, and Sonis got the final scene twice. Houston will have to settle for Campbell's milestone and a long, stormy night to forget.
