Denver Summit FC walked into Saturday's home finale needing a win to keep breathing. It walked out with six goals, a playoff pulse and a highlight package long enough to qualify as a Netflix docuseries.

Natasha Flint scored twice, Janine Sonis assisted two goals and Denver thrashed Racing Louisville 6-1 at Centennial Stadium in front of 12,372 fans. Kaleigh Kurtz, Melissa Kössler, Lindsey Heaps and Yazmeen Ryan also scored, while substitute Taylor White grabbed Louisville's lone goal, the first of her professional career. Denver had 20 shots to Louisville's six and never let the visitors believe.

Sonis Sets the Table

Louisville actually started brightly, and Kayla Fischer had the first look in the second minute. Denver needed 19 minutes to take control. Sonis found Flint unmarked at the back post, and Flint fired a left-footed shot into the top right corner.

Denver kept coming in waves. Heaps, Delanie Sheehan and Ryan had three shots blocked in the 22nd minute alone, and Louisville's attackers kept drifting offside, with three different players flagged between the 29th and 31st minutes. Just before halftime, Sonis struck again. Her free kick in the second minute of stoppage time found Kurtz, who headed inside the far post for 2-0. Per the Summit, it was Kurtz's first goal and first goal contribution of the season.

Racing head coach Bev Yanez thought the halftime scoreline was a bit harsh, per the club, pointing to several good moments from her side in the first half. The second half made that argument hard to sustain.

Nine Minutes of Pure Avalanche

Denver scored four times after the break, and three of those came inside a nine-minute stretch. Ryan set up Kössler for a right-footed finish into the bottom left corner in the 59th minute, Kössler's seventh goal of the campaign. In the 66th, Natalie Means swung in a cross and Heaps headed it into the bottom left corner. Two minutes later, Kössler turned provider on a fast break, and Flint finished low into the bottom right corner for her second of the day.

Kössler even had a third goal contribution wiped out when VAR overturned her 74th-minute finish for a handball. Denver barely noticed. White pulled one back for Louisville in the 79th minute with a first-time volley off a Lauren Milliet cross, but Ryan restored the five-goal margin two minutes later with a shot from outside the box that found the bottom left corner, assisted by substitute Olivia Thomas.

Four Players, Eight Contributions

Louisville's own recap summed it up: four Denver players had two goal contributions each. Flint scored twice on two shots, both on target. Sonis had two assists, and the Summit say it was the first time she has done that in her NWSL career. The club adds that she now has 20 total goal contributions, good for sole possession of third in the league this season. Ryan finished with a goal, an assist and a team-high six shots, and Kössler had a goal and an assist.

Then there is Heaps, who keeps doing Heaps things. The club says her header was her fifth goal in four matches and her eighth goal contribution in seven, and that she has scored in every match since Sept. 26 at Kansas City.

On the other side, White's goal was a genuine bright spot. It came in just her ninth NWSL appearance, per Louisville, and Milliet's assist was her seventh of the season, extending her single-season club record.

"Honestly, I don't even remember really what happened. I just put my head down and ran," White said. "I trust Lo (Lauren Milliet), so it was being in position to get the ball in the back of the net."

The Turning Point

Kurtz's header in stoppage time was the hinge. Louisville had survived a first half in which it was outshot heavily, and going to the locker room down one would have kept the door open. Instead it was 2-0, and Denver's second-half avalanche began 14 minutes after the restart.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Denver 20, Louisville 6.
  • Shots on goal: Denver 7, Louisville 1.
  • Possession: Denver 59.6 percent, Louisville 40.4.
  • Passing: Denver completed 415 of 475 passes.
  • Offsides: Louisville was caught four times, Denver once.

What It Means

Denver moves to 11-8-10 with 41 points, and the club spelled out the math: the Summit need to win at the North Carolina Courage on Nov. 1 and need Orlando to beat the Seattle Reign to claim the final playoff spot. The six goals also pushed Denver to 53 on the season, the most in the league this year, and the club says that ties the 2018 Courage for the third-most goals in a single season in league history. This was Denver's second 6-1 home win of the season, matching the August rout of Chicago, and it came six days after a 3-2 home loss to Angel City.

Louisville falls to 7-3-19 with 24 points and has now gone nine straight matches without a win. Denver also won the first meeting 1-0 in Louisville in May.

"It's been a tough year, a very, very tough year," Yanez said. "So I think a lot of the aim and objective and focus has been on what can we take from this? How can we learn from this? How can we continue to be better in every aspect of us?"

Racing closes its season at home against Kansas City on Nov. 1. "We want to finish strong, so I think we'll be raring to go," Milliet said.

Closing Take

Denver's playoff fate is not entirely in its own hands, but Saturday was a loud reminder of what this attack can do when it gets rolling. If the Summit's season ends next week, it will not be for lack of goals. If it does not, nobody in the bracket is going to want this team on the other side of the field.
