Six minutes into stoppage time, with a draw all but written into the books, Guilherme took a short corner, played it to Artur, got it straight back and cut into the box. His right-footed shot took a deflection off Isaac Boehmer and settled in the bottom left corner. Shell Energy Stadium had been waiting all night for that one.

Houston Dynamo FC beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 on Saturday night, and the visitors felt every second of it. Vancouver played the last half hour with 10 men after goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka was sent off in the 64th minute, and the loss, according to the Whitecaps, ended their seven-match unbeaten run and was their first MLS road defeat of the season. MLSsoccer.com billed Vancouver as the Supporters' Shield leaders coming in. Houston did not care about the billing.

A Strange, Stretched-Out First Half

The night started with a jolt. In the first minute, Édier Ocampo hit the left post for Vancouver from the right side of the box, an early warning that Jonathan Bond would need to be awake.

Then the match stopped for a long time. Diadié Samassékou went down after a collision in the 22nd minute, play did not resume until the 34th, and Agustín Bouzat replaced him. Both clubs reported that Samassékou was taken off the field in an ambulance. Vancouver lost Oliver Larraz to an injury in the 40th minute too, with Andrés Cubas coming on, and the fourth official eventually signaled 14 minutes of first-half added time.

The football in between was cagey. Takaoka saved a Guilherme effort from the left side of the box in the 39th minute and a Mateusz Bogusz strike from distance in the 43rd. Bond answered a Mathías Laborda shot in stoppage time, and Sebastian Berhalter sent a direct free kick just over the bar in the 16th minute of added time. It finished 0-0, and it felt like a full match had already been played.

Red Card Changes Everything

Houston carried more of the threat after the restart. Takaoka denied Ezequiel Ponce in the 60th minute, and four minutes later the game tilted for good. According to the clubs, a ball down the left sent Bogusz through, Takaoka rushed out to challenge him, and referee Ismail Elfath sent the Vancouver keeper off.

Boehmer came on in the 67th minute, and the Whitecaps said it was his first MLS appearance since Oct. 19, 2024, at Real Salt Lake. He was busy immediately. Boehmer saved a long-range Bogusz attempt in the 68th minute and a left-footed Guilherme shot in the 72nd, and Felipe Andrade fired one just wide in the 74th.

To Vancouver's credit, the 10 men still had punches to throw. Thomas Müller tested Bond in the 71st minute, and Berhalter forced another save in the 80th. Guilherme headed wide in the 88th, Boehmer saved an Artur drive at the top right corner in the third minute of stoppage time, and Bouzat headed wide moments before the winner. Then came the corner, and the goal.

Turning Point: Takaoka's Rush

The red card was the hinge. Before it, the game was even and edgy, and Vancouver had already rattled the post. After it, Houston peppered Boehmer and kept probing until the defense finally cracked. Takaoka had made three saves before his exit, and the decision to charge Bogusz turned a tight game into a siege.

Star Watch: Guilherme Delivers on the Price Tag

Guilherme finished with five shots, three on target, and the only goal. MLSsoccer.com put him at seven goals and five assists on the season, the team lead in goal contributions. Houston head coach Ben Olsen sounded like a man who knows exactly what he has.

"There is not a lot he can't do," Olsen said. "Right foot, left foot, he can provide, he can serve, he is good in the air, he is a great athlete, and he is a great soccer player."

Olsen also framed the challenge of coaching that kind of talent. "It is not just about his talent, we all know how talented he is," he said.

Bogusz deserves a mention for the chaos he caused, with three shots, two on target and the run that drew the red card. Bond made three saves to keep the clean sheet, and Artur, the captain, provided the assist on the winner.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on target: Houston 7, Vancouver 3. The Whitecaps' two keepers combined for six saves.
  • Shots: Houston outshot Vancouver 14-9.
  • Possession: Houston held 52.9 percent.
  • Crosses: Vancouver attempted 16 crosses and completed one.
  • Discipline: Vancouver collected four yellow cards and a red. Houston took one yellow.

What It Means

Houston improves to 7-0-6 with 21 points, and MLSsoccer.com had the Dynamo up to fifth in the Western Conference after the win. It was a quick recovery from a 3-0 loss at Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, and it extended a run of narrow home wins: Houston has now won three straight at Shell Energy Stadium, each by a 1-0 score, after beating San Diego and Colorado. The Dynamo also remain an all-or-nothing team, with zero draws in 13 matches. Next up is a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal at St. Louis CITY SC on Tuesday, then a trip to the LA Galaxy on May 23 before the World Cup break.

Vancouver drops to 9-2-2 with 29 points. Only their second loss of the season, and the first since a 1-0 home defeat to San Jose in March. The Whitecaps close out the pre-break schedule at San Diego FC on May 23, according to the club.

Closing Take

Vancouver arrived as the league's front-runners and spent the second half of this one shorthanded, with a keeper making his first MLS appearance in more than a year and a half behind them. They nearly got away with it. But Guilherme was signed to decide games like this, and in the sixth minute of stoppage time he did exactly that. Houston's season has no middle ground, no draws and very little calm, which makes it the most stressful watch in the West. On nights like this, it is also the most fun.
