Boston Legacy FC threw itself one heck of a housewarming party on Saturday afternoon in Foxborough. Gotham FC, the reigning NWSL champions, showed up as the guest who eats the cake before anyone gets to sing.

Esther González came off the bench at halftime and scored in the 55th minute, and Gotham beat Boston 1-0 at Gillette Stadium to spoil the expansion club's inaugural match. The crowd of 30,207, which Boston Legacy FC called a league record for an expansion team home opener, got noise, history and a red card. It did not get a home goal. Gotham starts its title defense at 1-0-0 with 3 points, while Boston begins life at 0-0-1.

The Press, the Patience and the Halftime Fix

For 45 minutes this felt like an opener where everyone agrees the atmosphere was the real winner. Boston pressed hard and made Gotham earn every clean pass. Jaedyn Shaw got the first real look in the 16th minute, meeting a Savannah McCaskill set piece from the right side of the six-yard box and pushing it wide. Nine minutes later Rose Lavelle set her up, and Casey Murphy got in the way.

The Legacy's best spell came around the half-hour mark. Jorelyn Carabalí forced Ann-Katrin Berger into a save from outside the box in the 32nd minute, two Boston corners followed, and Aïssata Traoré, a problem all afternoon, lifted a left-footed shot over the bar from close range off Carabalí's delivery.

It got spicy early, too. Alba Caño and Jess Carter were booked a minute apart, and Bianca St-Georges picked up a yellow in the 40th for a bad foul on Sarah Schupansky. File that one away.

Juan Carlos Amorós, Gotham's head coach, did not sit on his hands. He sent on González and rookie Jordynn Dudley for Katie Lampson and Schupansky at the break, with Dudley making her professional and Gotham FC debut, per the club.

Ten Minutes to Pay Off

The adjustment needed 10 minutes. In Gotham's account of the goal, Lilly Reale read a pass in midfield and picked it off, Shaw made room and sent her galloping down the flank, and Boston could not clear her cross cleanly. González was waiting in the middle of the box and drove a right-footed shot into the centre of the goal. 1-0, and a lesson in what a champion's bench looks like.

It was her first goal of the 2026 regular season and the 25th of her NWSL regular-season career, according to the club, making her the 35th player in league history to reach 25 regular-season goals and the 20th to do it with one club. It was also her ninth regular-season game-winner, which Gotham says ties Midge Purce for the club record.

The Red Card That Ended the Argument

Boston did not fold. St-Georges had a shot blocked in the 57th minute, Nichelle Prince sent one just over a minute later, and halftime substitute Fauzia Najjemba kept letting fly from distance. Lavelle nearly doubled the lead in the 71st, but Murphy saved her shot from the right side of the box.

Then came the 77th minute. St-Georges, already carrying that first-half yellow, fouled Dudley and was sent off with a second booking. Najjemba still forced Berger into a save from outside the box in the 81st, but chasing the champions with 10 players is a brutal way to spend your first afternoon in the league.

The rest was mostly paperwork. Four more players were booked after the 80th minute, nine minutes of stoppage time were announced, and the half did not end until the 12th added minute. Murphy kept it a one-goal game by stopping Dudley's left-footed shot in the second minute of stoppage time.

Who Ran This Thing

Esther González took one shot, put it on target and won the match. That is the entire striker job description in one line, handled in a half's work.

Lilly Reale, the 2025 NWSL Rookie of the Year according to Gotham, did the dirty work behind the goal and explained what Boston threw at the champions. "(Boston) had a really aggressive press, so figuring out how to break that down and get around it was difficult," Reale said, per the club. Her bottom line: "So, really proud of our team, and I think it just took a little bit longer today to open things up."

Jordynn Dudley made her debut look like an audition for a bigger role: five fouls drawn, a shot on target and the setup for Lavelle's chance, per ESPN. She was also the player St-Georges fouled for the red.

Ann-Katrin Berger made two saves for the clean sheet. Gotham says it was her 26th career NWSL regular-season win, extending her club record and tying Hope Solo for the 11th-most wins with one club in league history. Savannah McCaskill made her 150th NWSL regular-season appearance, and the club noted it was her first NWSL match for Gotham since Sept. 8, 2018, when the club played as Sky Blue FC.

For Boston, Casey Murphy made three saves, while Traoré drew five fouls, matching Dudley for the most in the match.

The Receipts

  • Shots on target: Gotham 4, Boston 2. The Legacy took more shots overall, 9 to 7.
  • Fouls: Boston committed 20 to Gotham's 13, and the last of St-Georges' four cost the hosts a player.
  • Interceptions: Gotham 11, Boston 5.
  • Crosses: Boston attempted 14 and completed 1.
  • Possession: Gotham held 52.4 percent, proof this was decided by moments, not territory.

Where This Leaves Them

Gotham leaves Foxborough at 1-0-0 with 3 points, and the club says the win put it level with the Portland Thorns at the top of the standings. Per Gotham, it was the club's first regular-season road win since a 2-0 victory over the San Diego Wave on Sept. 12, and it improved the club to 7-1-3 in opening weekend matches. The home opener against the North Carolina Courage is next, with a postgame ring ceremony for the 2025 title.

Boston sits at 0-0-1 and heads to Houston on March 21. The scoreline stung, but even Amorós made a point of praising the occasion. "I would really like to congratulate Boston Legacy and the city, and everyone involved behind the scenes, for making sure this was possible," Amorós said. "The stadium was amazing."

Pilot Episode

Every expansion story needs a pilot. Boston's had a packed stadium, a red card and a cliffhanger that never paid off, while Gotham played the veteran guest star who steals the scene and leaves with the points. The Legacy will get better afternoons in that building. They just booked the defending champions for the premiere.
