Some games take 90 minutes to find their plot. This one had it settled before most of PayPal Park had found their seats.

Midge Purce scored in the second minute and Gotham FC made it hold up for a 1-0 win over Bay FC on Wednesday night in San Jose. Per Gotham, it was Purce's 10th regular-season game-winner for the club, breaking a tie with Esther González for the club record. Bay pushed, Jordan Silkowitz made nine saves to keep it close, and a disallowed goal in the seventh minute gave Bay head coach Emma Coates plenty to stew on during the drive home.

Two Minutes, One Corner, One Very Long Night

Gotham did not waste time. Off its first corner of the night, Jaelin Howell nodded the ball down in the six-yard box and Purce, starting at right back, poked a left-footed finish from close range into the bottom left corner. Defenders scoring in the second minute is not usually part of the script, but Purce had also struck in the second minute five days earlier in a 2-2 draw at Portland. Gotham said it was her first time scoring in back-to-back games since October 2021.

Bay thought it had answered almost immediately. In the seventh minute, Kennedy Fuller tucked away a Cristiana Girelli knockdown, and the home crowd got loud. Then VAR got involved, Karlie Lema was flagged offside, and after a review that stretched to the 10th minute, the goal was gone. Coates was not exactly at peace with it afterward.

"I'm really confused about the decision for our disallowed goal," she said. "I've watched it back a couple of times, and have some questions."

From there, the first half turned into a trading of punches with no knockouts. Shelby Hogan saved from Alex Pfeiffer twice and Fuller once, while Silkowitz stopped Guro Reiten in the 16th minute and Rose Lavelle in the 32nd. Gotham led 1-0 at the break and made a halftime switch, with Bruninha replacing Purce.

Silkowitz vs. Sam Kerr, Several Rounds

The second half belonged to Silkowitz. Sam Kerr came out hunting and Silkowitz kept slamming the door: a left-footed shot saved in the 49th minute, a header saved in the 50th, another effort stopped in the 73rd. Play was stopped for an injury to Silkowitz after that 50th-minute save, and she stayed in. She also turned away Tierna Davidson in the 67th, Howell in the 78th, substitute Andrea Kitahata in the 84th and Jordynn Dudley in the 86th.

Bay had its moments late. Maddie Moreau's 85th-minute shot was blocked, Pfeiffer sent an 83rd-minute free kick high and wide, Lema skied one in the 87th, and in stoppage time Pfeiffer's left-footed shot was blocked, by Bruninha according to Gotham. Bay FC also gave Abby Dahlkemper a big ovation when she came on in the 84th minute for her first NWSL appearance since June 2025. The equalizer never came.

The Difference Makers

Midge Purce: One shot, one goal, one club record, and a half's worth of work. Gotham said it was her 19th regular-season goal for the club and her 28th regular-season goal overall. Not bad for a right back.

Jordan Silkowitz: Nine saves, which Bay FC said was her second-highest total of the season, behind the 12 she made at Gotham in April. Without her, this gets ugly.

Jaelin Howell: The assist on the winner came in what Gotham said was her 100th NWSL regular-season appearance, making her the 131st player in league history to reach that mark.

Shelby Hogan: Three saves and her 11th career shutout, per Gotham, and her second clean sheet in as many starts this season.

The Turning Point

The seventh-minute VAR call. Bay had just conceded and responded with exactly the kind of goal that flips a road team's night upside down. Had it stood, the match resets at 1-1 with Bay surging and a home crowd behind it. Instead Gotham got to play from in front for the rest of the night, and the club noted it improved to 8-0-0 when leading at the half. Give a team that good a cushion and it tends to stay comfortable.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on target: Gotham 10, Bay 3.
  • Saves: Silkowitz 9, Hogan 3.
  • Possession: Gotham 58.6 percent, with a 470-330 edge in passes.
  • Clearances: Gotham 34, Bay 17. When Bay did get into the box, Gotham had numbers waiting.
  • Kerr's night: Five shots, three on target, zero goals, all thanks to one goalkeeper.

What It Means

Gotham improves to 10-4-3 with 34 points. According to the club, Gotham kept pace with rival Washington Spirit and stayed two points off first place, and the win gave Gotham its second five-match unbeaten streak of the season. Gotham also said it has never lost to Bay FC, with five wins and one draw all-time. Next up is a trip to the Houston Dash on Saturday, closing a three-game road swing.

Acting head coach Shaun Harris liked the way the night was framed from the jump. "Being on the road, we're happy to get the three points and the clean sheet," he said. "It was really important starting strong, getting the goal and taking control from there."

Bay drops to 5-3-8 with 18 points and has lost back-to-back 1-0 games, at Houston and now at home to Gotham, without scoring in either. It closes a run of three matches in eight days on Saturday at home against Seattle Reign FC.

"It's just a shame that we couldn't nick a goal and at least come home with a point," Coates said.

Closing Take

Gotham played this one like a heist movie: get in early, grab the bag, and spend the rest of the night making sure nobody touches it. Bay did enough to make the champions sweat, and Silkowitz turned in the kind of performance that usually earns a point. But in the NWSL, a two-minute head start against the defending champions is basically a getaway car with the engine already running.
