Gotham FC spent the final 10 minutes on Saturday night throwing everything at the Boston Legacy goal: headers, scrambles, a point-blank rebound, a shot that Casey Murphy pushed onto the post. Nothing went in. Boston bent, bled fouls and yellow cards, and walked out of Harrison, New Jersey, with something it had never had before: a road point.

Gotham and Boston drew 1-1 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in front of 11,308 fans, the fourth-largest regular season crowd in Gotham history according to the club. Jaedyn Shaw put the home side ahead in the 37th minute, Alba Caño equalized three minutes later, and Murphy made six saves to make it stand.

A Cagey Start, Then Three Wild Minutes

The first half hour was a grind. Gotham tested Murphy twice in the ninth minute, first with a Midge Purce header and then with a Jordynn Dudley drive from distance. Boston's response was mostly physical: Barbara Olivieri was booked in the 21st minute and Sammy Smith in the 28th, both for bad fouls. The Legacy did build some pressure of their own. Caño forced Ann-Katrin Berger into a save in the 23rd, Laís Araújo headed straight at her in the 28th, and Olivieri tested her again from distance in the 32nd.

Then the game woke up. In the 37th minute, Esther González got a shot away from the middle of the box, Murphy dove to stop it, and Shaw was first to the rebound, poking it into the bottom left corner. Gotham's recap said it was the 20th career NWSL regular season goal for the 21-year-old, making her the second-youngest player in league history to reach that mark, behind Olivia Moultrie.

Boston needed three minutes to respond. Olivieri swung in a cross, Caño arrived at speed, and her right-footed finish from the middle of the box found the bottom right corner, via the post according to Boston's account. That was the end of Gotham's shutout streak, which the club said had reached 340 minutes, the second-longest in its history and its longest since 2013. Caño picked up a yellow card in first-half stoppage time, and the teams went in level.

The Siege That Never Broke Through

The second half belonged to Gotham, at least in terms of territory. Boston made a double change in the 57th minute, sending on Aïssata Traoré and Jorelyn Carabalí. The visitors had their best second-half look in the 67th when Nichelle Prince beat her defender and cut the ball back for Josefine Hasbo, whose shot was blocked. Araújo was booked moments later, Boston's fourth yellow of the night.

Gotham coach Juan Carlos Amorós turned to Emily Sonnett, Lilly Reale, Sofia Cook and Katie Lampson, and the pressure built. Dudley forced Murphy into a leaping save at the top right corner in the 70th minute. Gotham won three corners in a three-minute span starting in the 72nd.

The Turning Point: Murphy's Minute

If Gotham's night had a breaking point, it came in the 88th and 89th minutes, and Murphy was the reason it never broke. Dudley had a shot blocked, then Jaelin Howell fired low from the middle of the box, and Murphy got down to push it onto the post, per Gotham's recap. Lampson's rebound from very close range was blocked, and Boston credited Carabalí with the sliding block right at the post. A minute later, Dudley headed wide, Murphy stopped Reale from the right side of the six-yard box, and Guro Reiten had a shot blocked. From the 88th minute through stoppage time, Gotham launched nine attempts. None got through.

That is the whole story of the match in miniature. Gotham had the volume. Boston had a goalkeeper in the zone and defenders willing to throw themselves in front of everything.

Stars of the Night

Casey Murphy made six saves, three of them in the final 20 minutes, and was the biggest reason Boston left with a point.

Alba Caño put two of her three shots on target and scored the equalizer, while Barbara Olivieri provided the assist before coming off in the 57th minute.

Jaedyn Shaw now has a goal or assist in three straight matches, according to Gotham, matching the longest such streak of her career.

Jordynn Dudley led all players with five shots, two of them on target. Jaelin Howell recorded six interceptions and won four of six tackles, per the club.

By the Numbers

  • Shots: Gotham 16, Boston 6.
  • Shots on target: Gotham 8, Boston 4.
  • Saves: Murphy 6, Berger 3.
  • Corners: Gotham 11, Boston 3.
  • Fouls: Boston 21, Gotham 13, with four Boston yellow cards to none for Gotham.

Where Both Sides Stand

Gotham moves to four wins, three draws and two losses with 15 points, and the club said the draw kept it in fifth place. It also keeps Gotham's defense as the league's stingiest, with five goals conceded in nine matches. Gotham had won three straight without conceding, beating Bay FC 3-0, Chicago Stars FC 2-0 and Racing Louisville FC 1-0, so this one felt like two points dropped. Next up is a Friday night trip to Seattle Reign FC on May 15.

Boston, in its inaugural season, moves to one win, two draws and five losses with five points. After losing its first five matches, starting with a 1-0 home defeat to Gotham on March 14, the Legacy are now unbeaten in three: a 2-2 draw with North Carolina, a 3-2 win over Denver Summit FC and this point in Harrison. Boston hosts the Orlando Pride on Tuesday, May 12.

The Final Word

Amorós sounded more proud than frustrated. "The last 25 to 30 minutes, we put them under a lot of pressure," he said. "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes you draw, but I like knowing my team always wants to win and gives everything for that." He is right about the pressure. But this was a night that belonged to Murphy, who played the role of the final boss in a video game Gotham could not quite beat.
