Three matches into the 2026 season, expansion side Denver Summit FC already has a trophy-case moment. It just came against the team that owns the actual trophy.

Melissa Kössler and Natasha Flint scored in the second half, Abby Smith made four saves, and the Summit beat defending NWSL champion Gotham FC 2-0 on Wednesday night at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J., in front of 5,000 fans. According to Denver, it is the first win in club history. The Summit improve to 1-1-1 with 4 points, and Gotham, which had not conceded a goal all season, falls to the same 1-1-1 mark with its first loss of 2026.

Berger Keeps the Door Shut, For a While

Denver did not play like a team that was supposed to be happy with a point. The Summit pressed high and pushed numbers forward, and Ann-Katrin Berger was the busiest player in the building early. She stopped a Yuna McCormack strike from distance in the 18th minute, got down to deny Kössler from the middle of the box in the 22nd, and smothered a Flint effort two minutes after that.

Gotham's first-half answers were scattered. Katie Lampson dragged a shot wide from a tight angle in the 43rd minute after a Savannah McCaskill through ball, and Emily Sonnett's header in the first minute of stoppage time forced Smith into a save at the top of her goal. Flint and Lilly Reale were both booked along the way. Scoreless at the break, and the champs looked a little rattled.

The Summit Strike Twice

Gotham coach Juan Carlos Amorós sent on Esther González and Rose Lavelle at halftime, and Lavelle had two quick looks in the 49th minute, a header wide and a shot over. The pressure was building.

Then Denver punched back. In the 58th minute, the Summit broke at speed, McCormack slipped a through ball into the right side of the box, and Kössler finished right-footed through the middle of the goal. Gotham responded with a triple substitution in the 64th minute, bringing on Tierna Davidson, Midge Purce and Jordynn Dudley, and Dudley got in alone two minutes later. Smith came out to meet her and made the stop.

In the 73rd minute, Gotham gave the ball away in its own third, and Flint made it hurt, firing a left-footed shot from the left side of the six-yard box into the top left corner. McCormack had to come off injured in the 79th minute, but Smith kept the door locked, saving from Purce in the 84th minute and from Dudley again in the 86th. Then Denver survived nine minutes of added time like it had done this a hundred times before.

Kössler, Flint and the Wall in Pink

Kössler put both of her shots on target and scored the winner. Denver says she is only the second player in NWSL history to score in each of a club's first three regular-season games, joining Renae Cuellar in 2013. For a brand-new club, having a striker already chasing history is a wild flex.

Flint was everywhere: three shots, two on target, a goal and a yellow card. Per the Summit, the finish was her first career NWSL goal, and it came from reading a Gotham mistake rather than from a set play.

McCormack deserves a shout too. She forced Berger's first save, threaded the pass for the opener and put her only shot on target before her night ended early. Denver also went long with purpose, completing 26 of its 54 long balls, which kept Gotham's back line turning and chasing instead of stepping up.

But the night belonged just as much to Smith, who stopped all four shots on target she faced. Two of those saves came against Dudley in clear chances. In front of her, Denver piled up 31 clearances and 13 interceptions, numbers that tell you exactly how much defending the Summit were willing to do.

The Turning Point

The 58th minute changed everything. Gotham had come out of halftime with more attacking intent and two fresh attackers, and the momentum was drifting toward the home side. One quick Denver transition, one well-weighted McCormack pass and one composed Kössler finish flipped that completely. Gotham's response, the triple change and Dudley's chance, ran straight into Smith, and Flint's goal 15 minutes later ended the debate.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on goal: Denver 5, Gotham 4, even though Gotham led total shots 11-8.
  • Saves: Smith 4, Berger 3.
  • Clearances: Denver 31, Gotham 9. The Summit lived in their own box when they needed to.
  • Crosses: Gotham sent in 23 crosses and found a teammate with only 6.
  • Possession: Basically a coin flip, 50.4 percent for Gotham to 49.6 for Denver.

What It Means

Denver has played all three of its matches on the road so far: a 2-1 loss at Bay FC, a 1-1 draw at the Orlando Pride and now this. The Summit host the Washington Spirit on Saturday, and they will do it with a signature win already in their pocket.

Gotham opened with a 1-0 win at Boston Legacy FC and a scoreless draw with the North Carolina Courage. Per the club, its run without conceding in all NWSL competitions ended at 449 minutes, and these were the first goals it has allowed in 2026. There are crumbs of comfort for the hosts. Jess Carter, captaining Gotham for the third time in regular-season play, completed 47 of her 49 passes, according to the club, and Gotham has still allowed only two goals in three matches. It finishes its three-match homestand against the Orlando Pride on Sunday.

Closing Take

Amorós did not sugarcoat it. "We had the target to be better at home this year, and we need to have more consistent performances," he said. Fair enough. But this was less about Gotham collapsing and more about Denver arriving. Every expansion team dreams of its first big night. Denver's came in the champion's house, and it played out like the indie film that walks into awards season and steals the best picture.
