Sam Kerr Shakes Off Penalty Miss to Tie Gotham's Regular-Season Goals Record in 1-0 Win Over Dash

Sam Kerr missed a first-half penalty, then scored in the 46th minute to tie Gotham's regular-season goals record as Gotham FC beat the Houston Dash 1-0 behind six Shelby Hogan saves.

Sam Kerr spent halftime carrying a missed penalty around with her. It took her less than a minute of the second half to put it down.

Kerr scored in the 46th minute, steering a Guro Reiten feed into the bottom right corner, and Gotham FC made it stand up for a 1-0 win over the Houston Dash on Saturday night at Shell Energy Stadium. Shelby Hogan made six saves for the shutout, and Gotham said the result lifted the defending NWSL champions into first place and wrapped a three-game road trip with seven points out of a possible nine.

A Sweaty, Scrappy First Half

Gotham's own recap called the conditions 90-plus degrees, and the first half played like it. Houston came out with real bite. Leah Klenke had a header blocked and Paige Nielsen fired wide in the second minute, Hogan had to save from Kiki Van Zanten in the eighth, and in the 13th she got a fingertip to a Kat Rader shot from outside the box that, per Gotham, she pushed onto the woodwork. That was the save that set the tone for her night.

Gotham's best early look came from Jaedyn Shaw, whose 14th-minute shot from the left side of the box was tipped away by Jane Campbell. Then came the big swing. In the 18th minute, Jordynn Dudley was fouled in the box by Klenke, and when the kick was finally taken in the 22nd minute, Kerr's right-footed attempt slid just wide to the left.

Houston kept pushing. Maggie Graham forced a save in the 24th minute, Lisa Boattin skied one from distance after the drinks break, and Gotham's best answer was a Kerr header that flashed just past the top left corner in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time. Scoreless at the break, and Kerr's penalty miss hanging over everything.

Kerr Flips the Script in 60 Seconds

Whatever acting head coach Shaun Harris said at halftime, it worked fast. Right after the restart, Reiten slipped the ball across to Kerr in the middle of the box, and Kerr finished right-footed into the bottom right corner. Gotham called it a reach-and-redirect. We would call it a redemption arc on fast-forward.

Gotham said it was Kerr's second goal of the season, and the numbers behind it were heavy. Per the club, she tied Esther González for the most regular-season goals in Gotham history with 30, reached 80 goals across all NWSL competitions to move past Christine Sinclair into sole possession of third in league history, and scored her first NWSL game-winner since Sept. 8, 2019. That one also came against Houston.

From there, the Dash threw what they had at Hogan. Kate Faasse forced a save in the 55th minute, substitute Sophie Schmidt was stopped from outside the box in the 80th and nodded a corner wide a minute later, and in the sixth minute of stoppage time Hogan went full stretch to keep out a long-range Sarah Puntigam drive. Gotham, meanwhile, never added to its lead, and Dudley had to come off with an injury in the 88th minute.

The Stars of a Steamy Night

Shelby Hogan: Six saves and a third clean sheet in her first three starts of the season, per Gotham, filling in for regular starter Ann-Katrin Berger. The club said she has not conceded in her last 295 minutes. She sounded unbothered by any of it. "So when I step in, I just know I need to execute my role to the best of my ability. That's what I tried to do tonight," she told the NWSL+ broadcast, as quoted by Gotham.

Sam Kerr: Four shots, one goal and one penalty miss she will happily forget. Records, milestones and three points all in one restart.

Guro Reiten: The assist was her fourth of the season, which Gotham said makes her the team leader.

Jordynn Dudley: She drew the penalty and drew six fouls in total, more than anyone on the field, before leaving late.

The Turning Point

The 46th minute, obviously, but it only matters because of what happened in the 22nd. A missed penalty in sticky heat on the road is the kind of moment that can drag a team down for 90 minutes. Houston had been the livelier side and kept testing Hogan. Kerr erased all of that with one touch right out of the locker room, and Houston never found a reply.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on target: Houston 7, Gotham 3. The Dash tested Hogan far more often than Gotham tested Campbell.
  • Saves: Hogan 6, Campbell 2.
  • Possession: Gotham 60.2 percent, with 471 passes to Houston's 306.
  • Interceptions: Houston 16, Gotham 8.
  • Penalties: Gotham 0 for 1.

What It Means

Gotham improves to 11-4-3 with 37 points. Per the club, it was the team's league-leading 11th shutout of the season, matching its single-season club record, and the unbeaten run is now six matches with five wins and a draw. Gotham has also scored in six straight games, according to the club.

Harris kept the praise practical. "It was a really difficult game, and we knew it was gonna be difficult," he said. "Defensively we were a lot more solid. We managed to reduce the transitions for the most part, which we're really happy about."

Houston drops to 5-4-8 with 19 points, and its three-match unbeaten run (draws at Denver and Racing Louisville, then a 1-0 home win over Bay FC) is over. There was one storyline worth watching: Khyah Harper, acquired from Gotham in a trade earlier in the week according to the Dash, made her Houston debut off the bench in the 55th minute against her former club. The Dash close their three-match homestand against the Kansas City Current on Aug. 8.

Closing Take

Kerr's night played out like a two-act sports movie: the miss, the agonizing wait, the redemption shot, the credits. Houston will rightly feel it carried more of the threat, but Gotham has the tools that win tight summer games: a keeper in form, a striker who shrugs off misses and a defense that just does not give anything away. Right now, that formula has Gotham at the top of the table.
